Childlike//Empress (º2017, Wilkes-Barre, United States) are an avant-garde electronic duo composed of members Mikal Nolan & Leslie Lenchak. To put it simply, the two craft conceptual sonic artworks and performances. The pair accomplishes this by rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives; childlike//empress investigate the dynamics of musical landscapes (including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on the human assumptions of sound) rather than presenting a factual reality with their work. Ergo, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of the human imagination…

Childlike//Empress’ works establish a link between the rhythmic and tonal reality in the physical world juxtaposed with that imagined by those that listen. These works focus on not only concrete and mathematical questions that determine our very existence, but on the abstract and chaotic zeitgeist of the post 21st century. 

However, The conceptual sounds of their work directly respond to the surrounding environment and both Leslie and Mikal use everyday experiences from their lives as a starting point for inspiration. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context; but, by exploring the concept of music in a nostalgic way, childlike//empress creates with daily recognizable elements, an unprecedented situation in which the listener is confronted with the conditioning of his or her own perception and has to reconsider their bias positions.

Leslie and Mikal want to make it very clear, that their work urges everyone to renegotiate conceptual art and music as being part of a reactive or - at times- autistic medium, often commenting on oppressing themes in our modern society.
