INTERVIEW:

What made you start DJ’ing?

I’d say what made me get into DJ’ing was my production, the more music I made the more I wanted to play it to people live.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

The funniest thing that's happened to me was after a Bohemia night. We got back to my flat for afters, but my flatmate was seeing this girl who lived on up the street. We end up taking all the equipment to her flat at stupid o'clock to find it's a 1 bedroom flat with 8 people there. I left after someone kept on offering me poppers.

How do you feel when you play music?

I feel like it's hard to describe, I'd say it's a moment you don’t realise has passed until its happened. When I first started playing my own music it was surreal to see people actually dancing to it to be honest.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

When a crowd dances to my music it's such a compliment for me. It's a back and forth I really enjoy especially when I’ve made something new.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Someone coming up and asking for the track ID, it's like a handshake. Or maybe some intense finger guns at the front of the decks.

Who’s your biggest supporter? Would you say it’s Elliot, your friend in the photo? How do you feel when he’s there?

I would say it’s always an influence having someone around doing anything creative, it takes the weight off your shoulders. It makes you step back and listen through another person’s ears to share a moment. Regardless whether Elliot's around or not I'd say he’s one of my closest friends and biggest supporters. He’s always been there to give me an honest opinion on what it is which I rate a lot in a person.

What made you start DJ’ing?

I actually haven't been into electronic music for all that long to be honest. My flatmate bought a cheap controller a while back and I had a little play about on it now and then which made me buy my own set and get into it.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

One of the best times I've had playing was one of the nights on a ski trip to Tignes where me and Rhys decided to start at 140 and just play old chavvy tunes all night. We thought it was hilarious and everyone was still going mad it was class.

How do you feel when you play music?

The thing I love most about playing music is being able to express the sort of music that I love and enjoy, it’s such a great feeling cause it's almost a showcase of what you're all about.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

Seeing people enjoy the tunes that you play is the best thing about the whole thing. Seeing other folk appreciate the type of music that you have a genuine passion for is amazing, especially after you've taken time to hand pick those songs.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Once a girl in the crowd spoke to me after my set and said "I love watching you play so much cause it legitimately looks like you're having the best time and it's almost infectious", it was good to hear people enjoyed my shitty dancing haha.

What is your other passion? How does it relate to music?

I love being outdoors. I'm super into mountain biking and skiing and try to be out doing them whenever I can. Recently I've got into climbing too which has been class. Music relates heavily to the other things I enjoy because it can completely change the mood you're in and how much you enjoy it, like I'm always listening to music when cycling or skiing.

What made you start DJ’ing?

Seeing Optimo a few years back at lost village made me want to learn to play.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Mixing till 7am at new year to 3 people by the end because everyone else had fallen asleep.

How do you feel when you play music?

Exhilarating being in control of a room full of people’s mood and energy.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

There’s nothing better than the whole place dancing after a drop.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Honestly man you Bohemia guys being interested in getting me to play

Did your siblings influence your love for music?

My brother influenced me a lot for guitar based music but it was mostly my dad when it came to electronic music, he played a lot of 808 state and happy Monday’s when I was younger.

INTERVIEW:

What made you start DJ’ing?

The ability to build something new out of the selection of existing and preferably raw materials. Some grains, salt, spices and a touch of powder gets you a new recipe you share with your mates who are hungry. Oh yeah, the power of unity through music. On the dancefloor, there’s no strangers only friends you haven’t met yet. Leave your chaos and reality behind. As the sun rises, your soul goes back down to earth and gets ready for a new day.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Probably rave at the cave night, after a bumpy and steep journey, bringing back home mostly case studies instead of actual people. 2 lesbian cats who kept on spooning (literally and figuratively) all over the crib. Got blinded at first by their innocent looks, turned out to be a fat mistake. Was fun though at first.

How do you feel when you play music?

I feel very happy when I play. Whether it’s for a big crowd, a small gig or just by myself I feel at peace with myself and everything seems to flow. It Gives me a break from this hectic and competitive world we live in and allows me to focus on the actual moment and just enjoy it.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

It feels great to see that people enjoy my music. I believe that music heals people and creates strong bonds between them. To be the person who is responsible for creating this peaceful and fun atmosphere where you make people forget about their issues and giving them joy is my ultimate goal as a DJ.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

You are sexier than your music.

How do your homies like Ali G, in the pic, influence your music?

I think the fact that my homies are into different style of music has somehow influenced my style of mixing. Normally I am a very techno DJ but my homies being more into chill/groovy or funky while on the other hand some others more into breakbeat, experimental or tribal while some are really into classic Detroit/Chicago` house have derived my way of mixing. It made me more niche in terms of track selection, but I cover a wider range of genres from disco, house, techno or ambient/breakbeat/experimental. 

I think my homies most importantly helped me in finding my own taste and create an authentic style with my cultural influences and dig into Turkish/Anatolian sounds instead of trying to imitate what famous DJs are doing. Perhaps another factor is the fact that the scenes in Canterbury are mostly commercial dominated and so I had to alter my style a bit so that the crowd gets familiar more easily with the underground culture instead of slapping only hard techno which I ofc still do haha but more occasionally.

Oh and a shout out to Jayson from the Vinyl store the OG who I always go to and chill with, getting tracks and talk shit with. A lad outta Manchester with experience, who’s been a good guide in staying loyal to the underground!

What made you start DJ’ing?

I started learning from Soldan and seeing him getting into Rare got me pumped haha, cause I wanna join the best team in the deen.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Funniest DJ story is being so fucked at afters I didn’t have the speakers on for 10 minutes and was just playing through my headphones. Was too drunk until I looked up and realised ahaha.

How do you feel when you play music?

Playing music is the best high you can achieve and especially when you have a crowd going.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

Seeing people play music as bad as it sounds makes you seem like a boss but also happy to see your skills doing its job.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

From a crowd a girl came up to me and told me a group of lads were complementing me to everyone even though I hadn’t met them.

How have your friends like Callum, influenced your love for music?

Bro the smile I see on his face when he plays genuinely hypes me up so much. I’ve been able to discover so many genres of tunes. I’ve also been exploring what I thought I hated at one time and I’m understanding it better.
