눈물이 번져 시야가 흐려졌다.

무너져 버린 나를 보게 되고,
바닥에 떨어진 페어 테스트 용지가 마치 나의 “한계”를 형상화한 것처럼 느껴졌다.

미안해.
와 줬는데.
웃을 수 없어서, 정말 미안해.

내가 그렇게 말하기도 전에,
그가 조용히, 하지만 또렷하게 목소리를 냈다.

“……나도 알고 있어.”

그 목소리는 결코 책망하지 않았고, 그저 곧고 진실했다.

“네가 그 중정에 나오는 몇 분의 시간을 얼마나 소중히 여기는지.
페어 테스트 때, 웃고 있는 네가 얼마나 ‘억지로가 아닌 웃음’이었는지,
나는 분명히 알고 있어.”

“……흑……”

내 흐느낌은 멈추지 않았다.

“나도 하루 종일, 네 생각만 했어.
수업 중에도, 잠들기 전에도…… 계속.”

“왜…… 그렇게까지……”

내 목소리는 갈라져 있었다.
들키고 싶지 않은 마음이 모두 흘러넘칠 것 같았다.

하지만 그는 조금도 시선을 피하지 않고,
그 다음 말을 전해 주었다.

“그래서, 여기 오는 결심을 했어.
무너질 수도, 거절당할 수도 있다는 걸 알고 있었어.
두려웠어.
‘폐가 될지도’라고 수없이 생각했어.
하지만……”

그는 한 걸음 내 곁으로 와서, 조용히 앉았다.

“그럼에도 불구하고, 지금 이렇게 여기 있는 내가……
너무 행복해.”

곧고, 거짓 없는 목소리였다.

나는 그저 눈물을 흘릴 수밖에 없었다.
아무 말도 할 수 없어서, 고개를 숙인 채 그의 말을 가슴 가득 받아들였다.

나의 가치를, 나보다 더 믿어 주는 사람이 있었다.

“……고마워.”

겨우 짜낸 그 목소리는 떨리고 있었지만,
분명 지금의 “나 자신”의 목소리였다.

“무너질지도 모른다고 알면서도,
그럼에도 와 준 당신의 말에,
나는 다시 한 번,
‘믿어도 된다’고 생각할 수 있었다.
울고 있는 나까지도 받아들여 주는 사람이 있는 세계에서,
