Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Thursday morning (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 7th December 2020: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch389

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud GO tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks that have been previously submitted and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

All Christmas tracks have been saved to a special playlist that will go out before the big day.

From Ross: I wanted to write ‘The Day The World Went Away’ by NIN. I was reading White Noise by Don DeLillo so lots of the lyrics are inspired by that. The line ‘I can taste the bleach on your breath’ is about that scene in Mad Men where Don Draper comes home and washing his mouth out with Bleach to cover up the taste of the woman he’s been out with.

I Can't Breathe

Dj and production duo Ancient Astronauts have announced the release of their latest single, ‘Photoshop Reality feat. BANTU’ on the 27th of November. The single is taken from their groundbreaking Afro-European album ZIK ZAK, which will be released on the 22nd of January 2021 via Switchstance Recordings and features a variety of rising African musicians. The album was preceded by the noteworthy Kampala Fire EP. BANTU is a 13-piece award-winning band based in Lagos, Nigeria. Lead by Ade Bantu, they have won the Kora Awards for Best Group West Africa and Best Group Africa and have received support from The Guardian and Music In Africa.

BANTU pride themselves in striving to create critical social commentary with their music, sending messages via music and inspiring people around the globe. Leader of the band, Ade Bantu’s lyrics focus on the entrapment of minds within social media and how the platforms can distort our perceptions of reality. Deep, masculine vocals dominate the single, however light and modern production style prevent them from overwhelming the listener - instead entrancing them into a rhythmic joyousness. 

Speaking of the single, Ancient Astronauts tell us: “Our music always had a serious and conscious touch to it cause we believe that music can, and should, have a positive and thought-provoking effect. Ade´s lyrics in ‘Photoshop Reality’ really nail it when you think about today´s situation when it comes to social media, and Instagram in special. People trying to act like they made it, presenting themselves in the best way they can, overplaying reality, photoshoping not only their photos but their existence. It became a world of boasting and pretending things that don´t match reality. It feels as if people wanna escape reality through social media and luxury goods cause reality is too harsh for them. But then they don´t find their way back to reality. So they live in that Photoshop Reality.”

Turning relationship breakups, childhood stories and identity crises into something positive, the past decade of Chloe’s life has accumulated into her debut album “The Crazy One”. Armed with mental health themes, discrimination towards disabilities and heartbreak, the album has one theme throughout and that’s growth. Engineered and mastered with the help of Alex Vine Ruiz (Swan Studios), the release features Ali Clinton (Conflict Choir, Bernie Marsden from Whitesnake, Uli Jon Roth), Jack Bowles (Thomas Atlas), George Cook (Thomas Atlas), Chloe’s Dad Ian Mogg & Mirron Webb (RAIN). 

With her debut folktronica EP ‘Thalamus’ getting radio play on BBC Radio 6 & BBC Introducing, the songwriter released three singles in 2020 - electronic number “Judgement Day”, trip-hop single “Helping Hand”, and ethereal track “Attack” which received support worldwide. The debut album sees all of Chloe’s influences in one place and has become her most diverse work to date. 

A big advocate in raising awareness for ‘invisible’ illnesses, Chloe was featured on BBC Radio 1’s Minute of Me & as a featured artist for BBC News online talking about discrimination to musician’s with disabilities. During the first lockdown in 2020, Chloe co-created The 7 Arts Still Exist, a platform where artists and musicians could share their talent online. The event went viral and received praise from BBC Radio 1 and beyond. Recognising her work, Chloe received the ‘Local Hero’ at the AIM Music Awards in 2021.
