Founded in Uruguay in June 2018 by Imanol Castro (aka Imanol), in 2020 Panko joined the crew as curator. U´re Guay, is an independent label that releases varied genres from House, Electro, Acid, Techno and old sounds of Funk, Disco, Afrobeat and other eclectic rhythms.

Lion’s Drums full length exists as an exploration in multiple dimensions. First by challenging the notion of the album format by presenting a body of work that lies snuggly between remixes, edits and original works and secondly as a means to delve into the transcendent potential of the drum. The album sets the tone by putting these two concepts fully on display with its hypnotic chant, swaying one into ease over the first two songs. In orderly cue folding and unfolding, meditatively through, melodies as muddied pastelle whispers cast over the measured language of the drum. Breaking away from the musing themes of the opening songs we find an ecstatic ritual in "Tanz der Körperlinge" and "Journey to Middle Earth”, two distinct varieties but both of the same perennial species. Inky ether seeps back in through the second half of the album with a peak of frenzied tumbling toms and incongruous textures hovering above in the Manos Tsangaris’ collaboration “Crying Tafel” and his re-imagining of Tullio De Piscopo’s unhinged drum excursion “Fastness”. The closing exemplifies the edit/remix/original ethos proposed for this work with Lions Drums drawing from tapes and original material of electronic pioneers Suzanne Ciani and Roberto Musci. Drawing from unreleased music and song sketches by the original artists as well as field recordings from travels & studio sessions made by Roberto Musci & Manos Tsangaris in the 80's and early 90’s he constructs a side winding journey through playful textures and ethereal moods.

Roam Recordings kicks off 2022 with up and coming Canadian artist RJ Maxwell who brings forth two original electronic dance floor movers. The title track - Motherboard - is a driving energetic offering with melodic electronic underpinnings. The second original - Activate - is an upbeat chugger with a playful vocal. The EP is backed with three diverse remixes. The first is from Wonder Stories boss AIMES who infuses dark psychedelic energy into a shimmering remix of the original title track. For the second remix Canadian cohorts jON2 join in with a gorgeous low slung version of Motherboard. Rounding it out is Roam’s own Jason Peters who edges Activate into cosmic breaks 
territory.

Vilnius-based label and platform Electric Shapes starts 2021 with the second volume of its acclaimed compilation series “Unreleased Territories”. Featuring an interesting selection of artists from all over the world, such as Jokios Kultūros, Kolomensky, Tassilo Vanhöfen, Facets, Fabio Me Llaman Soltero (SXDNS187), Neud Photo, Anastasia Zems (SXDNS169), Anatolian Weapons, Volta Cab, Wolfstream, and A-Tweed (SXDNS222), just to name a few, the release invites you to this true musical trip through the depths of this mesmerising concoction of sonorities. 

We have the privilege of reviewing the contribution of one of our favourite producers: Ukrainian Volta Cab, currently based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is acclaimed not only for his productions but also his live sets. His many an influence allows him to competently flirt with several music genres. This time, he decided to go for something more cosmic and trippier. The melodic bell-like lead allied with the atmospheric pads and the arpeggiated synth layer provided a hell of a theme, definitely one of the highlights of the compilation.  

We finish the review with a beautiful message from the label team: “We really hope you enjoyed this musical trip through different parts of our magical planet. While we’re stuck inside during this crazy pandemic, we wish our music has helped you to escape, at least in your mind and soul. Stay healthy and stay alive!”
