"I recorded this mix at home in London over a sultry July weekend. It starts with one of my favourite Jon Hassell tracks, 'Blues Nile', a piece he dedicated to his beloved dog. Hassell was an absolute master of gauzy, hypnotic music - rest in peace and thanks from my heart.

The photo I took some years back near Cape Tribulation in northeast Queensland, moments before I was chased through the rainforest by a six-foot cassowary."

A fellow purveyor of the deep, dark, grotty and ritualistic, this show saw both DJ Winggold and v special guest Sybil pulling from all corners of their collections.

With a penchant for sounds that are equal parts weird, twisted and euphoric, she's an intuitive selector that's been racking up gigs up and down Europe. Take a listen to hear how they both channelled the chaos.

Is But A Mere Distraction

Tom Moody: A ricercare is an baroque-era musical style related to a toccata; correção means corrected. The use of conservatory terminology in your sound installation works (rondo, scherzo, fugue, etc) is playful and not completely on the level so I don't know if it's helpful to look for ricercare structure here, unless it's what the Wikipedians describe as a "predominantly homophonic piece, with occasional runs and passagework." I'd call it a cross between a lullabye and a dirge, with wistful synth trills slowly repeating and interacting for several minutes. A soft and subtle piece.

St Celfer: My titles are a play but also a critique-yet-not on classical music terminology. As you know, my "Space Between Points" project (which these sound pieces are a part of), questions the basic nature of language, more directly, labels, by attacking the idea of "the frame." Without giving away too much, on the simplest level, Italian and Portuguese are in the same title. The spirit behind my choice of words is the opposite of mocking and is almost reverential as much as it can be from someone on the folk-to-punk continuum. In the past couple years I spent more time listening to classic jazz and modern classical music in search of something interesting. I think we are in bleak music days and appreciate your sharing Jerry Hunt with me and pointing me to Michael Schell's resource page.

Originally from Sydney, @lilydalton is now living in Melbourne where she has been spending the lockdown period exploring a widely expanding catalogue of music and walking her dog. Lily is a versatile DJ who is wholeheartedly addicted to the pursuit of special records from then and now. She has an affinity for deeper, stripped-back sounds and is inspired by the escapist possibilities offered by immersive soundscapes.

"The world feels pretty claustrophobic right now so I thought I’d approach this mix with the mindset of trying to counter that with soundscapes that feel quite vast. I’ve found that music is resonating with me differently amidst the current times and I think this mix is quite reflective of that. This is a slow-moving mix with moments of heightened emotion but also a fair amount of breathing room. Best suited for a solitary stroll or simply for staring out the window: I hope this mix provides you with the same calm escape as it does for me."

Growing up in one of the Netherlands' quieter nooks, @tammohesselink’s unwavering passion for music saw him spend countless hours of his youth in his attic, digging, researching and building up a profoundly deep knowledge and love of electronic music. Eventually, this singular passion lead Tammo out of his attic and into his local record store “Deeptrax”, where the guys behind the counter helped to refine his taste further, indoctrinating him to the sounds of Chicago, Detroit, Berlin and The Hague. Over time, Tammo very naturally found himself working at the store, where his taste continued to both deepen and expand, with a growing appreciation for a diverse range of sounds including UK-centred post-dubstep, leading to the distinctive, genre-bending approach he is known for today.

As a producer, Tammo has developed an outstanding body of work under a range of alias’ since the mid-2010’s, first releasing via his own imprint “The Invariants” before seeing his music published on famed Dutch platforms @delsinrecords and @nousklaeraudio in more recent years. Although there may be variations in sound and approach between his projects, one constant is a solid sense for warm, resonant groove which filters through the many aspects of his music - from light-hearted arpeggiated synths, to organic, intricately programmed percussion. 
Tammo carries this same quality into his DJ sets, which has enabled him to take the stage at events such as Breakfast Club and Dekmantel Selectors, and also to become a resident at the now sadly closed De School.

This rhythmically diverse mix for Patterns of Perception channels Tammo’s inimitable sound and musical insight, building from a deep, measured beginning, before gathering energy and momentum further into the mix. The result is a fiercely arresting 83 minutes of music that takes the listener on a winding narrative journey through varied and utterly compelling club music.

Formed in Berlin in 2016 by six friends, Patterns of Perception is dedicated to cultivating compelling, visionary electronic music through their residencies at OHM Berlin and ://about.blank, in parallel with their long-running and influential mix series and zine.

This mix is a collaborative effort, with track selections from all six members of the crew: Kim Bergstrand, Bianca Shu, Steve Duncan, Zilke Grogan, Ray Pham, and Andreas Maan. Among the wide variety of artists represented, a couple of friends and collaborators can be heard: Aleksi Perälä and natural/electronic.system, however the majority of the music is drawn from other times and places. In putting the jigsaw puzzle together as a mix, Andreas Maan tried to allow the selections themselves to guide the way, and the result is a meandering journey: a subtle, glimmering collage punctuated by rising and then dissipating tensional layers.
