Hi! My name is Declan (he/him), currently residing in Melbourne/Naarm. I’m trying to learn Hungarian at the moment so I can apply for dual citizenship.


How did you get your DJ name? 

I was at a festival a few years ago and while sitting around the campsite talking shit a few friends started coming up with nicknames for me. They eventually went from Declan > Lecdan > Doiflan > Loifdan. Drop the dan and ‘LOIF’ was born.

Any advice to upcoming producers/djs?

I think probably the hardest part of getting into either practice is the steep learning curve (especially with producing). What I found most helpful was learning from other people. When I first started playing around with mixing and buying records I was lucky that a large chunk of my mates were all getting into it at the same time. I spent sooooo many days just endlessly mixing with friends and we would constantly share music and ideas and concepts, many of which still inform my style today. I doubt I would’ve stuck with it if it wasn’t for such a passionate and supportive group of people I was lucky to learn with. Similar can be said about producing - I have found collaboration to be endlessly helpful. Every single time I’ve worked with other producers/musicians/mixing engineers etc. I’ve picked up at least one or two techniques or ideas that have been essential in the way I make music going forward. Everyone has a different way of doing things and you can only benefit from getting a wide range of perspectives on how people practice their craft.

Also, don’t be too concerned about buying super fancy top-of-the-line gear - if anything learning on a less than ideal set up can be beneficial going forward. I would probably be a much worse DJ if I hadn’t started mixing records on cheap audio-technica turntables. By the same token, having a limited set up when producing (ie. a shitty laptop, 2 VSTs and a handful of samples) is limiting but allows you to learn the basics without being overwhelmed and will make the transition to more complicated gear and techniques much smoother in the future.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

There’s a lot that would be good to see but I think more emphasis on safer spaces for dancers, performers and artists are incredibly important. Unfortunately in Naarm unwanted attention, sexual abuse and sometimes violence is a regular occurence in a lot of clubs where promoters and venue owners don’t put the necessary work into making sure this type of behaviour is stamped out. When these safe spaces are created it’s an incredibly powerful feeling knowing you are safe to express yourself and that everyone shares the same level of respect for one another. A new club that just opened in the CBD called Miscellania has done an amazing job in fostering this kind of environment, partly due to the fact that they trained friends to work on the door as security and ensure the right kind of people were coming in. Too bad it was only open for two weeks before we went back into lockdown :’(

LOIF - 6° Of Separation

A mix from LOIF for the Animix series makes perfect sense. Declan ( @loiflan ) has the most incredible knack for weaving deep, layered, magical musical journeys, and is fast growing a name for himself as one of the most exciting up and coming producers in Melbourne.

In recent times, we've seen a slew of recent @loiflan releases on compilations for labels such as @ute-rec x @amniote-editions, @purespacefm and @local_knowledge, and incredible mixes for @pipipigroup, @neurocrankk and @steeplejackrec. After attending Labyrinth festival in Japan together a few years ago as avid music fans, which I can safely say inspired us both immensely, it's been amazing to watch Declan grow and evolve as an artist over the last few years, and really develop a unique style. 

Keep an eye out for a Loif release on Animalia coming later this year.

Portuguese artist Delectatio is a new signing to Silk Sofa. His EP, "Sunrise", features four unique and unforgettable downtempo cuts.

"Numinous" starts with intriguing guitar riffs and enjoyable melodies on top. Soon, intricate percussion elements as well as hypnotizing vocal stems emerge, while the delightful theme melody continues to liven up the soundscape. A blissful guitar line and soothing percussion elements introduce "Be Free". Fascinating vocal stems are added later, thereby adding an extra layer of delicate and refreshing textures. "Remember" begins with a stunning atmosphere, including a number of lush synths and an intricate bassline. A mesmerizing arpeggio melody emerges later, and numerous sound effects continuously spice up the soundscape. The final song in this package is "Latibule". Beautiful melodies are quickly established, and multiple new layers are added on top, as the song progresses. The soothing breakbeat comforts the listener even further.

Delectatio - Numinous [Silk Music]

A psy-fi power hour from one of Australia’s most exciting artists, LOIF. 

Based in Naarm/Melbourne, LOIF made his production debut in late 2019 with the release of ‘Electronic Organism’ and has since landed on a broad selection of record labels such as Animalia, Ute.Rec, Amniote Editions, INDEX Records and Pressure Dome. Most recently, LOIF released his new album ‘GHOSTWORLD’ on Steeplejack. A project that was five years in the making, featuring collaborations with sina, bluhol, and Nū, ‘GHOSTWORLD’ shows the full breadth of LOIF’s ability to build these immersive worlds, journeying through impeccable sound design and psy-influenced soundscapes whilst accomplishing the balancing act of drawing inspiration from both the natural and the digital. Some stand out moments include the deeply emotive, melancholic tone of ‘As Above, So Below’ featuring sina to the tunnelling, skittering energy of ‘Ektoplazm’. On the album, LOIF has created a world that is so distinctively his sonically that lends itself to his live and DJ sets - a couple of the tracks on there are expansions from a live set LOIF had been working on. Whilst LOIF prefers to play outdoors and is deeply influenced by the nature he is surrounded by in Australia with the DIY park parties and bush doofs, over the last few years, LOIF has made a global leap with performances at Persona, Dekmantel Selectors, Dripping, Ohm, Osmosis, Fata Morgana and Recess (in NYC, which is run by como se DJ, who we featured last week), with plans to return to Asia and Europe in the coming months.

One of my first edits from my library of found sounds: "Relaxing Rain and Loud Thunder" is designed as a brief intro into my perspective on contemporary field recording. This is actually a few different storms, recorded in different times in various places piled up on top of each other to create a uniquely soothing three and a half minutes. This mix is the live recording of my set at Free Movements on the 28th of September 2019. I really enjoyed playing this set, sat in a cozy dark room, with my friend Hanzo’s psychedelic visuals swirling on a mesh backdrop behind me.  

This is the first time I've played a Deep Mind Music set out where it felt like everyone was totally dissolved in the music. There's times where it's more appropriate for ambient music to wash into the background of conversations, such as in a chill out space at a rave, but for what I'm aiming to do with this music, I feel it connects more deeply with total absorption into the sound.

I realised there’s three Pete Namlook tracks in this mix, which is a strong indication of how much his music means to me. Including an all time favourite, ‘Calm Box’ which he made with Atom Heart in 1996 as Jet Chamber. It sounds like gently pulsating orbs of light flickering in an infinite expanse of darkness. Pete is a truly incredible artist, whose otherworldly music has touched the lives of so many people. A spirit our world is lesser without, RIP. If you don’t know Pete Namlook’s music or amazing label FAX, I couldn’t recommend having a dig highly enough.

I have to say, I’ve been feeling kind of disconnected from the world this past month. Introspective and far away. Ambient music is something I retreat into when I’m feeling insular, and it means more to share this mix now than when I recorded it in September. I hope this mix gives you a space to breathe, to dissolve into a hologram of sound, and carry you through whatever you’re going through. 💙

The Belgian musician Daniel Danieli, working under other aliases including d162, In a Left Place & Leinad, is a selftaught music lover and producer. He first started out as a drummer and played with a live band before he found his passion for all things electronic around 2004.

Dan’s influences range from his pre-electronic past: from jazz, rock & jungle through to the freshest techno outputs of today; giving his productions a wide spanning sound palette and a deeply considered rationale.

His productions evolved progressively and naturally to a more subtle and atmospheric world where organic sounds meet frenetic grooves.

His first contribution for Lowless happened in 2018 with an EP of 4 remixes dub oriented called 'Daniel[i] revisits Saebius.

It was the official start of a fruitful collaboration between the artist and the label through originals, various artist and remixes contributions.

In 2019 he released Etrusci which ended installing the artist in the deep tribal scene. His future release on Lowless is scheduled for Summer 2020 with a 12" containing 4 tracks keeping this identity in a more electric way.

Beside of is strong contribution to Lowless, In 2020 Daniel is launching his own imprint called whispering signals.

Lowless 대한 강한 공헌 외에도, 다니엘은 2020년에 whispering signals 라 불리는 자신의 레이블을 출범시키고 있다.
