A clubbers guide to 1995. 

As in a real clubbers guide to 1995, rather than the Ministry of Sound CD series. This was a fantastic year for clubbing. After 1994 it felt like it couldn’t get much better. But 1995 saw some great tunes released, quality club nights were available everywhere and so many of us were having the time of our lives. I went through some records that I had from ’95 and put this one together as a reflection of some of the tunes that were big in clubs at the time - not the massive anthems that get played all the time but some of the big club tunes that haven’t appeared on tons of compilation CDs. I’ve done other mixes of the big vocal anthems from around 1995 but this mix is a little more underground.

This was the year that my clubbing exploits went well beyond the likes of Club UK and the Clockwork parties in London, as I discovered the clubs in the midlands and the north. Aged 20 I moved to Birmingham to become a student and regularly went to places like Wobble, Crunch, Fun, SLAG and Republica. Great times!

You can see how progressive house was a real influence in clubland during this year. There’s a nice build to this mix with things starting off upbeat and vocal, and then some lush progressive tunes, and a more banging ending. 

A few hisses, pops and clicks in here as this is a hybrid mix using some of my old vinyl and some digital files. One or two of the vinyl records in this are ‘well used’ hence the little imperfections in the sound – which I think adds a bit of warmth. Enjoy.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Dance DJ Producer from Belfast, Chris has been resident at Stereo Sessions @ Thompsons Garage where he has been consistently curating his unique dance floor friendly house sets for the last number of years and gaining a solid reputation amongst the Belfast crowd in the process. Chris's sets feature tinges of everything from old school to hip hop and disco - with years experience as a dj on the Northern Ireland circuit. Recently Chris began a production journey, creating club-ready 90s style house aimed directly at the dance floor and has new releases on Integration Recordings (Jex Opolis), The Basement Discos, Stuck in Time, Miura, Sleazy Deep, World Sound Recordings & Cleeveland City
