There are always those nights when our thoughts or experiences don't let us sleep. This composition was created from an improvisation of a sleepless night and reflects the peace, the magic but also the loneliness of the night and its influence on humans.

Winter Evening

This is the 18th track and a beautiful piano song which has a solemn and mysterious atmosphere, included in '24 Piano Sketches' that is a new solo album from Yuki Murata, the Tokyo-based pianist/composer and member of the cinematic instrumental music band, Anoice, and its side projects, RiLF and Films.

As the name suggests, '24 Piano Sketches' includes 24 piano songs which Yuki Murata plays improvisations on her own grand and upright pianos. This long project is going to add 2 songs every month and ultimately 24 songs in one year, allowing the listeners to feel the changing of the season in real-time via the beautiful, warm, and sometimes melancholic piano sounds.

This time, she purposely selected a cassette tape recorder, a MiniDisc player, and an early generation of iPhone as the recording equipments for each song, unlike studio albums from her own bands such as Anoice. These retro and simplistic recording devices were able to capture not only a creaking noise coming from the piano and the environmental sounds outside the window, but also a noise occurred by cheap microphones, which make this album so impressive. Its nostalgic soundscape may remind her listeners of her first solo album 'Films' and second solo album 'Home'.

The photos taken by her bandmate of Anoice, Takahiro Kido, on his Polaroid camera every season, are adopted as the cover images of each single, and they will added together with the songs to the following BandCamp page every time a single is released.

Winter solstice 2024
For many years Ive done a song, improvised, and put on Soundcloud. Although I do not post often here anymore I did want to keep up this tradition, brought a keyboard with me to my lakehouse here in Iceland, winter is upon us, not cold, but snow and ice.

Wonderful day, I started with an idea, did a few versions, and no go, and then this one just jumped out, fully developed. So nice when that happens.

I make music because it is where I let go of the have-to’s, and become part of something larger than myself. The language I speak on the keyboard when I improvise expresses a part of me that only comes out there at the moment of creation - when I’m fully connected and in the flow. In those moments when I disappear in the music, those are where I’m most fully alive. The musical question I pose to myself when I play is largely this: how can I release my inhibitions and let go of patterns sufficient to bring something entirely new, unexpected, and enlightening into the world, with structure, precision, clarity, and depth of expression. These pieces are meditations that are of me, but more precisely, they come through me. When I’m in the flow, I’m channeling the energy and only moderately directing it. The challenge is to be open to take risks while maintaining a structure, melody, and tempo that makes it interesting and satisfying enough to keep listening. I keep doing this nightly because it’s a language, because it’s a connection to something greater than myself, and because it’s very very relaxing.
