Some jangly Byrds-style guitar opens this week's list, courtesy of Big Tide, but once we get into Blonde Maze, it's pretty much non-stop dance-oriented music. GULP have a new album out later in the year, which I'm looking forward to. Elsewhere Bonobo gets another look in, remixing Kiasmos, and there's some old school soul from Martha High. Given the untimely death of Tom Petty it would have been nice to include something, but what, and where to put it? Thanks to Flash Atkins, though, that problem was easily solved. Then it all ends up with some very chilled sounds from Chris Coco, which I'd like to hear re-mixed. Pick of the week: Flash Atkins' disco edit of Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly" is genius, but would benefit from being a couple of minutes shorter, so it's GULP's "Morning Velvet Sky" for me. It was one of those songs that made me turn the radio up when it came on.

The Sound Of Café Del Mar - Episode 1

It's already been 5 years since the last Zombie Zombie album "Rituels d’un Nouveau Monde" has been released, after which the group has explored other territories by signing 2 film scores; "Loubia Hamra" by Narimane Mari and "Irréprochable" by Sébastien Marnier, as well as creating the music accompanying a contemporary circus show called "Slow Futur" by Martin Palisse and Elsa Guérin.
Wouldn't these beautiful parentheses make you want to return to the sources? After 10 years at Versatile Records, 2017 also marks the anniversary of the release of their first album "A Land for Renegades" in 2007, at the time considered to be one of the 10 best albums of the year according to Rough Trade.
This new opus "Livity" seems to plunge us into science fiction, with a cover designed by the mythic cartoonist Philippe Druillet, who is also the founder of the Métal Hurlant comic series. The title of the album is somewhat misleading, as one could think of a certain dub record made in Jamaica at the famous Compass Point studio at the Bahamas. If you didn't know, "livity" or "life force" is actually a Rastafarian concept. The record was finally recorded last winter in Paris, in a very short time frame. 7 tracks played live in 7 days, by Etienne Jaumet (synthesizers / rhythm box / metallophone / sax), Cosmic Neman (drums / vocals / sound effects), and Dr. Schonberg (percussion / electronics / trumpet), recorded at the Red Bull Studios by Thibaut Javoy and Jerome Caron, their 2 very competent engineers. To keep it in the family, the album was then mixed by another member of the Versatile stable, the mysterious and legendary DJ/producer I:Cube, done in the label's studio, Victor Studio.
On this album the principles that are dear to the group rest being respected, still as far as always from the standards of 'radio play'. A living kind of music, composed of long instrumental moments recorded with analog synthesizers and drum machines, accompanied by drums and percussion. But I:Cube's touch may bring that unique energy that one finds at the group's concerts; on certain titles like Livity (with its classic 808 drum kick club side, well ahead and bewitching with jungle sounds recorded in Laos) and especially on Hippocampe, which gives the impression of hearing an old school hip hop rhythm with the power of a metal band, having replaced their guitars by synthesizers: recommended to listen to in a convertible at the ring road.
The cinematic connotation is still strong, on titles like "Ils existent.." or "Acera", originally composed for ciné-concerts accompanying films by Jean Painlevé et Maurice Pialat. The energy of the beginning is still very present, as is - of course - the kraut inspiration. But it's also an album that takes new directions, like on “Looose”, which brings to mind the "Art Ensemble of Chicago", like a groove of James Chance in New York in the early 80's, with the free sax solos of Etienne Jaumet and Dr. Schonberg with the trumpet. The group also offers some slower and calmer titles, like "Heavy Meditation", as well as to explore new more experimental tracks in the line of French 70's groups such as Lard Free or Richard Pinhas, for example on the bonus track "Black Moon".

Kiasmos mark their return in 2017 with a new 12” EP titled Blurred — available worldwide on October 6th via Erased Tapes.

Since their 2015 Swept EP, the duo have been performing shows extensively across the world. After writing and recording together in their native Iceland this year, the pair will be bringing a glimpse of light to a particularly gloomy time of year as their light sounds are brighter than ever.
