The story:

Balearic DJs Chris Coco and George Solar started making tunes together a couple of years ago after a chance meeting at Ibiza Sonica radio followed by some deep chats about dub and the future of chill out music.
After a string of singles they decided to make an album based (loosely) around various rhythms for the basic inspiration. George, who is also an accomplished percussionist, made a list - Nyabinghi, Guaguanco, One Drop etc - and Chris added one of their own - Algaroba. 
The basic rhythm tracks were recorded in Ibiza, mostly drums and percussion, naturally, with a little added bass from Fly, who also, fortuitously, is the sign writer who made the cover image.
Various elements were added in Ibiza, Buenos Aires and London, and, after some digital wrangling an album of beautifully organic downtempo delights finally took shape.

Over the last few years, NuNorthern Soul has established a number of traditions, most notably annual releases that provide a snapshot of the label’s output while also considering their suitability for certain seasons. Perhaps the most popular is founder Phil Cooper’s Summer Selections series, which each year showcases warm and sunny gems mined from a range of forthcoming releases.

The 2021 edition of the sampler, the third in total, may well be the best yet. Six tracks deep and as subtly varied as you’d expect, the entertaining set features tracks from a mixture of exciting newcomers, experienced producers and long-time members of the NuNorthern Soul family.

To kick things off, Cooper introduces us to Marshall Watson, an American producer who later in the year will release two five-track EPs on the label. ‘A Door To The Sky’, which will feature on the Sunsets On Larkin Part 1 EP, is sumptuously sun-kissed, with delay-laden electric guitar textures and sparkling electronics reclining over a tactile electronic groove. Lova’s ‘Echoes of Memories’, the track that follows, recalls the atmospheric, synthesizer-sporting new age Balearica popularised by Quiet Force in the late 1980s. The Italian producer was signed after bringing a USB stick of productions to one of Phil Cooper’s gigs in Ibiza; his Gypsophilia EP will be one to check when it drops later in the year.

GusK’s ‘Sketch #4 - Anafi Nights’ is seductive and exotic. It’s a crackling and atmospheric musical painting that daubs starry stabs and yearning melodies atop a bubbly, lo-fi drum machine beat. It provides a perfect snapshot of the Greek musician’s Mediterranean Sketches EP, which gathers together home recordings made between 1997 and 2003. 

Arguably even more immersive and enveloping is ‘Aqua Blancas Sunrise’ by Tambores En Benirras, the musical project of Cumbrian selector DJ Gripper. A slow-burning delight full of intricate musical flourishes –think drifting female vocalizations, Indian-influenced percussion, twinkling pianos and haunting clarinet motifs – the track is one of the many highlights on the Barrow in Furness-based producer’s forthcoming debut album for NuNorthern Soul.

To round things off, Cooper has chosen to offer-up cuts from two very experienced artists. George Solar (real name Georg Boskamp) is an Ibiza-based German producer who has been collaborating and releasing music since the late 1980s. ‘Infrared’, his contribution to Summer Selections 3, is a languid and glassy-eyed slab of slow-motion Balearic dub. His Los Rayos Del Sol EP will be one to look out for later in the year and is his debut solo release.

The sampler’s final missive fittingly comes from long-time friend of the family B.J Smith, a regular contributor to NuNorthern Soul releases who has reunited with Huw Costin – a vocalist he previously worked with on Smith & Mudd releases for Claremont 56 – for a double A-side single due later in 2021. ‘Sun When You Come’ is as warming and hazy as you’d expect and features Costin’s emotive, reverb-laden vocals and mazy electric piano solos rising above a suitably horizontal groove. It provides a stunning, sunset-ready conclusion to another superb set of Summer Selections.

Dario Aiello’s first EP for NuNorthern Soul as My Friend Dario, Cosmic Sailing, was one of the label’s most inspired releases of 2020 – a six-track musical voyage into the unknown that cannily combined elements of Balearic disco, ambient, turn-of-the-90s Italian dream house, horizontal jazz-funk and colourful synth-boogie.

With such strong musical motifs and instrumentation to work with, NuNorthern Soul boss Phil Cooper decided to ask some well-established producers and friends-of-the family to put their own spin on the Sicilian producer’s EP. The result is Cosmic Sailing Remixed, a four-track set of reworks that takes Aiello’s mesmerising, atmospheric and enveloping cuts to whole new musical places.

Those seeking extremely immersive, mood-enhancing music will be thrilled by Blair French’s tactile, sunrise-ready take on ‘Malvisa’. The Detroit-based musician and soundtrack composer draws heavily on the kaleidoscopic but mellow synthesizer textures of Aiello’s original version while continually adding new layers of percussion and electronic melodies. The result is a swirling, calming remix that should delight home listeners and slow-motion dancers alike.

Following up on the recent release of the first single from their upcoming “Redbook” album (which releases 13. August), Solar Moon is happy to have one of their favourite Vienna producers/remixers on board for the first - and most hip active - of three “Mwezi” remixes:

Stefan Obermaier, once wunderkind and keeper of the flame of what is know as the ‘Vienna sound”, has grown from there to one of Europe’s most respected contemporary electronica producers. Bringing not only his A game but also his trademark bubbly funk dub vibes for the occasion, Stefan's version of “Mwezi” is sure to appeal to both fans of his early Vienna Scientists days as well as to the ever growing global slowhouse massive… that way abducting the swahili tinged chillout lullaby vibe of the original version straight onto the tastier dancefloors of Tulum and the likes. In a fat dub combo!

Solar Moon - Mwezi (Stefan Obermaier Remix)

SOLAR MOON “Mwezi”

The title of this, the first single taken off the next (and fourth) Solar Moon longplayer “Redbook”, couldn’t be any more fitting: “Mwezi” is Swahili for “Moon”.

And while the “Redbook” album, just like its three predecessors, is mainly & carefully curated from undusted & refurbished top studio shelve material amassed during now 27 years of band history, “Mwezi” is a brand new song, composed & produced between the band members only this spring.

With the basic loops provided by George Solar from the white island of Ibiza and the dreamy yet super catchy vocals (plus basic drums & bass) recorded in Uganda by Razoof, it took just one final session at Tom Dams’ Studio Forstmehren  (located deep within the german countryside) to finalize this little big ode to the pale planet in all its glory. With sweet melody carrying a message both clear & simple:

“The Sun rises, I feel great
the moon comes up I feel happiness
because all happiness connects at night let me tell you.”

Embedded in the signature Solar Moon production sound - always highlighting a big calm, ample of precious time & lots of wide open space as per usual - these words become like either a mantra or a lullaby, depending on perspective of course. Solar Moon invites you to feel free to feel free, and you got the full six minutes in order to do so. In case it wouldn’t work the first time, just press repeat.

A happy accident from the other week when playing for full moon at one of Ibiza's most amazing outdoor venues: merging 2 of my favourite tracks into something surprising to probably all 3 of us.

Yeahman's tantalizing "Carinito" on Wonderwheel X Islandman "Sattava" (just released on Music For Dreams). I hope all participants forgive me sinning :) too nice to keep it under wraps so here we go - summer night soundtracking!

Nerdy fact: "Carinito" is a cover of Los Hijos Del Sol's wonderful Cumbia classic from 1979. The Editor strongly encourages to check out all tunes mentioned - and the adventuruous ones among you should try mixing this at home. Solar Saludos!
