LoverBoy Chronicles II

Established by Vancouver music collective "Ulterior Motif (UM)" and creative agency "Practice Practice", CHOOSY is an event series that aims to strengthen community ties and create a discovery experience for everyone attending. Rooted in the idea of "selection", our goal is to curate a mix of individuals across different industries, highlight talent available to our city, and offer a space keeping young creatives in mind.

Ever since my dad passed, the one phrase that’s been on my mind is “Give your flowers while they can still smell them,” which is what served as the main inspiration for this mix. As I reflected and reminisced, there were times where I wish I did this more, times where I gave him his flowers more, but sometimes you just get so caught up with life you know? And it hurt knowing I didn’t have that chance anymore. So I promised to myself that I wouldn’t repeat this with my mom and I would make sure I gave her her flowers as often as I could - while I still could - because time with loved ones is precious.

Also, as you get older, you start to truly understand the kinds of sacrifices your parents made to raise you. For me, this was especially true after my dad passed. I learned more about him, his life, and who he was as a person through stories and memories told by loved ones. Through this, I gained a much deeper level of love, appreciation, and gratitude for both him and my mom.

All these feelings compelled me to show that same love, appreciation, and gratitude through the best way I know: music. My dad was actually the original influence on my music taste, growing up on oldies like Earth, Wind & Fire and Luther Vandross. So, I made this mix to be a combination of both oldies and more modern songs - showing my dad’s influence and how it’s affected my music taste today, and also reminding me that he’s still here through the music.

‘Give Your Flowers’ is more than a year in the making because I wanted every song to really capture what I was feeling, so I hope you enjoy this 1.5hr labor of love.
