Tom Baker - a nocturnal life

A scholar of quality, rhythmic music since playschool, Tom’s early ear for emotive sounds was subliminally tuned by his parent’s jazz performances, where he was exposed to intricate musicianship in club environments well before his teenage years. But youthful chin stroking soon gave way to wide-eyed excitement the night Tom discovered acid house. He’s been a true convert to the cause ever since, not just as a soldier of the underground, but one of the scene’s true green berets.

A humble C90 cassette tape, mailed into Mixmag’s bedroom DJ competition in the early 90s offered ample evidence of his mixing skills. He beat over a thousand hopefuls to first place, enough to win him gigs at a string of high profile events. Seminal London clubs such as The Gallery at Turnmills, Bagley’s Film Studios and Ministry of Sound all booked him, but it was the crowd reaction to his innovative and eclectic sets that secured his reputation.

With a residency at Sound Architecture in Rotterdam and a non-stop itinerary of bookings all over Europe, Tom’s record box soon found its way around Asia and all over the Americas. Internet broadcasting via Pulse Radio with Natalie C helped him reach an even broader audience. The show ran every week for five years, played host to a talent roster that reads like a who’s who of the London scene, and included broadcasting live from the Winter Music Conference in Miami.

But big clubs and headline gigs are not Tom’s only accolade. His underground credentials have been honed through countless warehouse parties where those in the know vote with their feet. Uncompromisingly selective, Tom digs ever deeper for the real dance floor gems. That’s why the dance music glitterati from Fabric in London to Sonar in Vancouver have good reason to remember his name.

And underground legends such as Terry Francis and Asad Rizvi have conferred their own marque of distinction on Tom’s productions. His early collaborations with Lawrence Mohamed were signed to Wiggle, Wrong and Brique Rouge – seminal labels that have established tech-house as a global phenomenon through a succession of world-class releases. Tom’s low- slung bass-driven take on the sound has powered some of the best festivals, clubs and parties, and assured his place in the scene’s discography.

Hear Tom in action behind the decks and you’ll find yourself immersed in a soundscape that’s impossible to ignore. His sets are always heartfelt, ever enticing and sometimes just downright filthy. Meet him at the bar you’ll be wowed by his knowledge, enthusiasm, warmth and wicked sense of humour. Book him to play and you’re assured of much more than tried and tested floor-fillers with all the usual drops and hooks. BEATSWORKIN: AKA JAMIE BAWN & CHRIS EATON - Deep House, Tech House and Techno DJ's and producers from Sussex have been smashing dance floors and playing some of the best underground tunes you will here. BEATSWORKIN had secured a monthly residency at Brighton's amazing OM and then later at H Bar as well as putting on nights at The Volks, The Haunt and Concorde 2 in Brighton. Every Party they have had at these venues has been fantastic with quality sets from themselves and their guest djs. 

Monthly guests have included:  Nick Curly, Mr.C, A Guy Called Gerald, Swayzak, Terry Francis, Alex Celler, Burnski, Glimpse, Inland Knights, Giom, Reset Robot, Jon Marsh (Beloved/Fabric), Saytek (live), Jon Gurd, Colin Dale, Eddie Richards (Wiggle), Pure Science (live), Rob Pearson (Evasive), Raymundo Rodriguez (Jaded), Jay West (Candy Music), Dominique Danielle (UnknownFM/The Egg), Tony Nunn (Freaky Disco), Dave Mothersole & Grant Dell The latter dj playing at their first all ticket event at Brighton's Volks in July 2010. 

The nights at H Bar, OM, and Volks have been so successful as they have combined with some great local talented djs who have played around sussex as well as having special international guest djs. Unlike other nights they haven't stuck to booking the same local djs month in month out as there are so many great djs across the south-coast and London, that they give the International Headline djs a run for their money!

Beatsworkin have been producing for over a year now too and have tracks released on Masterplan Recordings and are soon releasing tunes on other labels as well as their own new label with Ian Knight called Two Forks! Their last 2 tracks: Behind and Orange Peel have been their strongest so far and have had good feedback from djs such as Alex Celler and Saytek.   Their new track 'Zakopane' is being released on Two Forks in May with a remix by SAYTEK!
