The verses start off with such sadness as they detail a character who is lonely, heartbroken, and lost. The character meets a woman who tells him that no one should be lonely on Christmas night. Instead, rage against the dying of the light. Speak up, be heard, reach out. The song is inspired by the message of suicide prevention. Though it sounds really depressing at the beginning, the real message comes at the end of the song, offering encouragement for those who need it during this holiday season.
