Sam’s EP boot’s off with ‘Chocolate’, a track that builds and builds using detuned synths, stabs and funky drums to make any dance floor erupt. ‘Domino’ is a track that’s bassline drones underneath its own distinctive synth line to keep the drums rolling along steadily. The title track ‘Black Leather’ is everything you would expect in a Drumcode record; a subtle throbbing bass line which, keeps the track moving before the synth stabs enrapture the track and twist it into a dark, throbbing composition. The final track ‘Daegon’ uses dubbed out drums to incorporate a synth melody line that will blow your socks off and rounds off this well shaped EP.

Die Vögel are back.
Almost two years after their sensational debut release‚ Blaue Moschee, the arena rocking EP that’s still a permanent fixture in Sven Väth’s record bag, Die Vögel have laid another milestone in the history of club music - the Fratzengulasch EP.
Ground breaking, surreal and captivatingly timeless, this dance music doesn’t give a damn about the laws of gravity and the monotony of everyday routines. 

For some reason or another, there seems to be a sort of restricting fence around the electronic dance music scene at the moment. In true Trojan style, Die Vögel batter and ram the wall until a hole appears; a hole big enough for all the gleely squealing party people to crawl through. Out and on to freedom! It’s a brave new world and help is at hand for the weary of ear. Listen in to the dream-like canons, freely dissonant brass orchestrations and hypnotic-psychedelic beats.

The arrangements are clever, without relying on samples and tried and tested techniques. Off they stroll, Mense Reents and Jakobus Siebels, breathing in the fresh air, enjoying a clear view of a history of nocturnal dance music that goes back beyond 1986 and Chicago and is today international electronic folklore.
It was the machines that taught Die Vögel duo to play their instruments in a different way and from them the machines have learned what makes a musician tick.

That’s how songs like ‚Fratzengulasch’ come about: A tribal meditation, and a beautiful canon sung by Jakobus and Ebba Durstewitz, otherwise known as the band Ja König Ja.

Or the glorious ‚Maikäferbenzin’: There are sub binaural sounds on this track that get your brain hemispheres swinging in perfect synchronicity, on a frequency generally only experienced when in a trance. And there they’re left, swinging away until the last third of the song where an abrupt saxophone break briefly interrupts, only to deliver the listener safely back into an absolute state of bliss and felicity.

Mense and Jakobus’ brilliant Pantha du Prince remix got people wondering but even before that the question cropped up: what is this music?
DJ Koze calls it ‚Sect Funk’.
We say: Pampa style in its purest form!

Old Studio Liveset, thought I'd put it up for all you old skool diehards.

Just my CD, it was released as a double pack with Myself and DDR on CD2, in about 1997 I think. You can download this one, I can't put DDR's up, You'll have to ask him if you want it, sorry abut that, but I have to save space.

The set was made in my studio in Brick Lane at the old Truman Brewery, which I always regretted moving out of. I had a lovely big room with huge windows looking over the side alley of the brewery and I ended up living there for a bit after we moved out of our house in Stamford Hill. Great area, I would move there again in a heartbeat. Even if just for the curry.

I did this set with a 66Mhz PC running Cubase Compact under Windows 95. I had one column of midi tracks in a 4 bar loop, my Akai S3200 sampler was loaded with vocals and drums and loops, these were all being played by the Cubase loops, The rest was hardware kit running in pattern mode synchronized to the PC by Midi clock, my Nord Modular was running drum synths and other patterns, The 909 doing the main drums, Two 303's with a bunch of different patterns, one doing basslines the other doing lead acid lines, The Sequential Pro One doing a bunch of random shit that I was just bashing into it and fading into the mix with delay and reverb FX on, and that was it. 

I ran through it once recording to DAT. The first 45 mins are completely live, then something went out of synch so I stopped and reset synch and finished it off. I had to make a little edit to join it back together, I was using Soundscape at the time for HD Audio so that took care of the edit and here's the final result.

These days this kind of thing is a piece of piss to set up on Ableton Live and you can do so much more with midi controllers now too, but 15 years ago it was a different story.

We're very proud here at Phonica to announce the launch of our very own label!! And we're even happier to see one of our own, Hector being behind our first release. For "Tension" he's teamed up with long-term friend and studio-collaborator Ben Bryant for our first offering. The aptly named "Tension" is a masterclass in suspense and hypnosis; a sleek, brooding techno cut which doesn't so much attack the danceflooor as enfold it. On remix duty we've managed to secure Appleblim - the Skull Disco co-founder and Apple Pips boss - in partnership with Al Tourettes. Typically unconstrained by genre expectations, the duo sculpt an epic, adventurous re-version of "Tension". Propelled at first by a galloping steppa's rhythm and analogue bass stabs, soon echo-drenched vocal samples and deep dub flavours take hold, before the track climaxes in heads-down, thrillingly linear four-to-the-floor style. Hope you like it as much as we do...!!

PHONICA001 Hector & Bryant - Tension (Original Mix)

The first release on Phonica White Limited Series is from Okinawa's Iori. This young producer's impressive work ranges from woozy ambient electronics to full-on club tracks; the common thread is a highly developed sense of texture and arrangement. A-side "Galaxy" is simply lean, expertly crafted techno, led by a rolling bassline and crisp hi-hats, with hypnotic melody patterns skittering off the surface. It's a trippy but accessible heads-down affair that has the depth and the bite to do damage at peak-time and in the after-hours alike. "Urge" on the flipside is an even deeper, sub-heavy cut, an insistent, club-friendly groove swathed in burbling synth arpeggios and FX. Despite being stripped-back, the sound design and sheer warmth of the production is incredible; the track really breathes. This is a two-tracker of ultra-effective dancefloor material that will appeal to fans of Basic Channel, Ostgut-Ton, Sahko, Sleeparchive and other purveyors of bassy, surgically-focused techno.

Iori - Galaxy

Phonica Records return with release no.6, that features three spellbinding remixes of a track that’s a classic around these parts… 

Originally released in 1994, Bob Holroyd’s effervescent, career-defining anthem "African Drug" was included on both Francois K’s 'Essential Mix' and Coldcut’s 'Journeys By DJ: Coldcut' - 70 Minutes Of Madness. So when Bob walked through our shop’s doors one day, we couldn’t resist asking to license the track and give it a new lease of life with two breathtaking remixes. And that’s exactly what we did. 

The first remix comes from the consistently trailblazing Four Tet. Clocking in at just under 12 minutes, there’s only one word to describe it – epic. Using the African samples of the original, Four Tet builds a complex, glockenspiel-esque melody that slowly morphs into a feast of hypnotic percussion, pulsating sub-bass and dizzying, psychedelic FX. Following a brief remission around the halfway mark, the melody returns, unspooling into a climactic freak-out that’s simply classic Four Tet. 

On the flipside we have rising star of T.Williams – who also gave us the first Local Action release – re-tooling "African Drug" for more leftfield dancefloors. An absorbing, off-kilter percussive intro gradually gives way to a heavy yet streamlined 4/4 groove. Ultra-modern but mindful of the source material’s timeless appeal, this is a raw, powerful version with ‘secret weapon’ written all over it.
