Long ago. In a galaxy far away...  so it seems by now at least, the Droid Behaviour crew around my friend and @DJsandBeers co-host Drumcell organised an amazing CLR showcase party in LA, on the 21st of July 2012 to be exact. Drumcell, Truncate (back then as “Audio Injection) and our friend Dean Paul were playing alongside myself in that incredible night (see pics in the post). Today you get the second hour of my set. Even DJ Hyperactive was dancing :) Legends all around. The Droid crew are famous for their Interface parties, all amazing productions and locations, sometimes legal and sometimes illegal. Actually the first event I played for them was back in 2009 and I remember when Moe aka Drumcell  (who I met that night for the first time in person) told me proudly that none of their illegal warehouse parties did ever get busted.. well guess what happened at that night in 2009, haha. It was a start of a long lasting friendship and collaboration and I was super happy that they were willing to also throw a CLR showcase party in 2012 in LA. If you know me, you know the love I have for that city and all my friends living there. Btw, in 2013, Drumcell released his outstanding and timeless album “Sleep Complex” on CLR. I highly recommend checking this out, as it is still as fresh and valid today, as it was on its day of release. And another btw, this year will be the re-launch of CLR, which went into hibernation for some years while I was working on my albums for Mute Records, "Burn Slow", released in 2018 and the next one, which will also be out this year. Let´s travel back in time again. I hope you like these excursions to the past. September 1st 2014. Monday, Ibiza. Amnesia. Cocoon. 

That should tell you basically all you need to know. It is nice to use these times to travel back a little and remember the amazing summers we had, especially on the white isle of Ibiza. Cocoon always played a big part of that, the first time I played at Amnesia was in 1999, which was the first (pre) season for Cocoon hosted by Sven Väth, who essentially paved the way for techno on the island, which was unheard of really before that time. Those gigs at Amnesia were always very special for me, I loved the club and the DJ booth, the light jockey, who never spoke one word of English and me no Spanish, but we were always super happy to see each other and work together. I hope one day I will be able to return to that DJ booth and experience all that again. This set is a little longer than 3 hours, today you get the third and last hour, and if you wanna have the full set without me talking, you might wanna check my Mixcloud Select channel for more. This week´s AMFM is the fifth hour of a 6h set that I played at Concrete, Paris on September 23rd 2016. The Concrete Club was on a Boat (barge) on the river Seine in the middle of beautiful Paris. The crew behind Concrete is one of the most wonderful bunch of promoters I have ever met and it showed in what they had created with this club. I always loved to play long sets there, I think my longest one was 10h (I think I might even released that set as another AMFM show). And I also always loved to open up the night, as I did in this case, hence the beginning of the set. In the background you can hear the people entering the club, directly aiming for the dance floor and ready for whatever there is to come. Talking about the audience, those at Concrete were some of the most open minded and ready to party people I have encountered in my career. Sometimes a DJ would be playing Drum and Bass before you, sometimes House… anything good and the crowd had a good time, I loved that atmosphere. Also it always was very intimate, with a no picture policy, you as a DJ were basically standing right in front, smiling, dancing and laughing along with this amazingly diverse crowd. And all that essentially in the middle of Paris. I really miss this place and put it up there with cult clubs that have sadly closed their doors forever, like Output, Omen and so on. Concrete closed its doors for good end of July 2019 due to issues with the owner of the barge. It will be forever missed, but the crew behind Concrete is still busy and I am sure one day we will have a new amazing place created by them for us to party at. Until then, we have those memories… and recordings. Enjoy.

Chris Liebing is synonymous with techno. His legacy is long assured, but his craft never stops evolving. Whether as label head, podcast curator, DJ or producer, he continues to challenge himself and his audience to explore new realms in the electronic world. And often ahead of the curve, too, from the early, hard-edged and loopy 90s sound which is back en vogue today, through his more stripped-back turn of the millennium minimalism and onto the cinematic atmospheres and broader alternative electronica of his latest albums on Mute. It's no stretch to say, then, that Chris Liebing's story is closely connected to the story of techno itself. 

Liebing is considered a global techno ambassador, but his ambitious album projects and direct club tracks excite and innovate as much as any new school star. A proudly forward-thinking attitude ensures that is the case as his DJ tools and studio setup constantly evolve. He continues to be an early adopter of emerging technology, too, just as he was with vinyl controllers, Traktor and when leading the way with full hybrid/live DJing. 

These days, Liebing incorporates an ever wider sphere of sound into his own work. After an eight-year break from full lengths, 2018's Burn Slow on Mute was a creative rebirth that received critical acclaim and confounded all expectations. It was a melancholic mediation on gothic moods, looming apocalyptic landscapes and optimistic broken-beat techno that drew from his childhood love of Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and the New Romantic movement. 

Remixes for Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp followed alongside a collaborative single with Charlotte De Witte, and 2021 brought a second album on Mute, Another Day. It found Liebing exploring all new ways of expressing both his euphoric and melodic side, all with high-grade technical skill and meticulous sonic craft with a range of collaborators from Miles Cooper Seaton to Polly Scattergood. This exceptional form continued into 2023 as he returned to the club with his Love Those Who Fight With Passion And Faith EP on CLR, a passionate and politically charged call to the dance floor that joined Liebing and Luke Slater’s remix of Depeche Mode’s iconic ‘Ghosts Again’ in the first half of the year. 

Born in Giessen and active ever since the 1990s, Liebing has always platformed the talent around him as much as himself: a long time before they were commonplace, he famously helmed his own CLR podcast. For many years, it was the scene's most influential series, with a who's who of international pioneers at the helm. After that came the equally important AM/FM radio show, but now following a hiatus, the CLR podcast is back and pushing a fresh techno agenda, as is his iconic label of the same name.

In its first chapter, CLR stood for Chris Liebing Records, then Create Learn Realize, and now Create Learn Repeat - a subtle evolution that is at the heart of everything Liebing does. The label will always be synonymous with exciting techno and is now back hosting parties and festival stages. 

Though his music is underpinned by pulsating menace and a stomping sense of drama, Liebing himself is friendly with a famous smile. It is the music that motivates him and the freedom that comes with increased experience. These days there are no limits, no expectations, but a continued love for the art and craft of techno that is taking him down all new creative pathways.
