The guest mix in the second hour is by Specific Instructions, a Colombian artist based in Paris and resident of the French DJ Collective, Fast and Technous. He’s a DJ and a Producer and delivers sets that combine hypnotic techno, hard groove and latiomerican music.

What and who is A Darker Wave?
We are a duo (jacki-e & p-mac) who present our own radio show every Saturday at 10pm UK, 11pm CET on both NLive Radio www.nliveradio.com and Circl8 Radio www.circl8radio.com. The show is repeated on Sundays at 3am UK, 4am CET on House Nation Toronto Radio www.hntradio.com. We put the show together in our home studio. The show is streamed worldwide on the internet via the Tune In Radio app. Each show is posted on our Soundcloud and Mixcloud pages once it has been streamed.
We also play gigs as A Darker Wave and we have played at events in Germany, Birmingham, the East Midlands and Brighton.
The music we play is techno, tech house and deep house.
Each show is 2 hours long. In the first hour we go into the mix with our featured EP of the week and the best of the new releases.
In the second hour we invite new and upcoming DJs to come onto the show and do a guest mix.

Why are you called A Darker Wave?
Dark Wave was first used in the 1980s to describe a dark and melancholy variant of new wave and post-punk music and was first applied to UK musicians such as Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode and Anne Clark. It was also used to describe artists who combined music with performance art, such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, who challenged and explored the darker and obsessive sides of the human condition.

A lot of techno takes its spirit and ethos from this music, Listen to Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire and you can hear the industrial sounds which are a staple of techno music today.

Techno is the outsider of electronic dance music, the punk of today's modern music scene. As Dave Clarke said in an interview with Mixmag, " Techno is edgy. Techno will challenge you......it's the real dark art."

Our radio show, in presenting the best in underground techno and deep house music, and in giving an opportunity for new, up and coming DJ's and producers, is providing an outlet for new techno, which is best described as being the new wave of modern dance music.

Not just a new wave, but with it's incessant bass rumblings, synthesiser drones, pounding drums, melodic top notes and eerie, distorted vocal samples, techno, in all its forms, is a backdrop to and a critique of our post-industrial, consumerist society, one in which our actions are observed 24/7, our democratic freedoms are threatened by our very own governments and our rights to do, think and act as we please are under ever increasing scrutiny. Techno really is A Darker Wave.

When we were listening to music in the 60’s and 70’s, before the electronic tentacles of technology infiltrated the world, we often thought, whilst listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Hawkwind, Captain Beefhart, New York Dolls and Roxy Music, where would music go to in the future? It could never be what was being portrayed in the science fiction movies of the time. Now we know. It can be anything. When we have a recording studio in our own home which is more powerful and versatile than anything available back then, we now know music can be anything and go anywhere. It is only the spark of our imaginations, or lack of it, that holds us back. On our laptop computers we have the capabilities that many artists back then would have given their right arms for. It’s for the uniqueness of the artist to express themselves to be able to stand out from the deluge of music available. Finding those gems is the modern day equivalent of crate digging and when you do, it makes it all worthwhile. Long live music!!!!

Eddie Merced is one of those artists whose sound speaks on a universal level. The Connecticut DJ and producer has honed a strain of techno and house that matches driving rhythms with richly melodic machine soul. As legendary French techno pioneer Laurent Garnier testified, “Eddie is one of the (too) rare producers these days that are keeping deep, soulful techno music alive.”

The key to the authenticity in Merced’s whole approach lies in the roots of the sound, tracking everything back to its source to understand where house and techno have come from in order to better take it forward. Merced’s life has been immersed in music since soaking up his dad’s love of freestyle and early 80s electro and heading off on his own voyage of exploration. From an affinity for soul, funk and disco through to the full spectrum of electronic music new and old, Merced’s appetite for sincere expression has been fuel for his own sharply-focused music. 

He established R4808n as a platform for his creative vision, framing the epic scope of his synth-rich production with the alluring intrigue of clandestine mysteries both of this earth and beyond. Elsewhere, Merced’s productions have been recognised and carried by scene-leading labels like Upon.You Records and Marco Bailey’s MB Elektronics, Yousef’s Circus Recordings and Brothers’ Vibe’s iconic New Jersey house imprint Mixx Records. His breakthrough release From Within, which also gives his istreem radio show its name, was carried by Gabcat back in 2016. 

As a DJ, Merced has played across the US, in the UK and mainland Europe, bringing a hi-octane energy to dancefloor settings, while his radio shows and studio mixes make space for slower, more introspective sounds that round out his musical identity. At all times, he keeps a handle on that vital deep techno, Detroit-inspired soul element that marks out his music. It’s a cohesive approach which has rightly drawn support from such respect luminaries as Colin Dale, Karotte, Ken Ishii and Claude Young Jr, while Carl Cox famously worked stems from Merced’s track ‘Tri-State Hustle’ during a hybrid live set at Ultra Music Festival 2022. 

True to techno’s origins as a fusion of technology and soul, Eddie Merced’s mission lies in the depth of his expression and the places he can take you - his is deeply rooted music heading into the future, reaching skywards as it hits you deep within.
