LA has always had and has a special place in my heart. So many amazing memories. Been playing there since the late 90’s. In 2009 I played for the first time for “Interface” (now @Observe) and it happened to be the first time that I met Moe Espinosa aka @drumcell who since is one of my best friends. That first party was quite something, as I forgot one of my bags with my sound interfaces in the hotel and Moe had to drive me back to the hotel (a 45min drive.. well yeah, that is LA) and during the drive we got to talk a little and I asked him if this parties he is doing never get busted as they are mostly illegal in downtown LAs warehouse district. He told me “never”. Next thing that happened was that he got a phone call with me in the car driving and someone told him that the fire marshalls just showed up and busted the event. He as the promoter of the event couldn’t be there as he was driving the idiot who forgot his bag in the hotel. To make a long story short, he and his crew organised a new warehouse nearby and I ended up playing till the morning. I recently posted about it, so go back on my Instagram and you see a little video how all this went down.
This time it was the 20 year anniversary. I managed to not forget my bags, but when I entered the event space, I saw a police helicopter hovering above me with a spotlight shining right at me. Luckily it turned out they weren’t interested in our party, so this time no location change was needed and we had a blast. I am so honoured to be playing at their 20 year anniversary. The crew around Drumcell has been a cornerstone in the LA underground Techno scene and without them, Techno on the west coast would not be what it is today. All promoters running techno shows in LA, San Diego and so on should be grateful for them building such an amazing scene. @observe , good luck for the next 20 years and I hope I can play a little part in it, also in the future.

With a career spanning nearly three decades, Alexander Kowalski’s story is a living testament to the legacy of Berlin techno. His journey began in the late 90s amidst the city’s cultural revolution, ignited by the emergence of techno music. Debuting in 1997 under the moniker DisX3 at the legendary club Tresor in Berlin, he quickly established himself as a driving force in shaping the sounds of the era with fast-paced beats and robust bass lines. 

His impactful live sets also led to releases on the esteemed label of Tresor.Under the guidance of Heiko Laux’s Kanzleramt label, Kowalski pioneered the melodic and sophisticated sound for which he is renowned—a sound that has become synonymous with German techno. His albums 'Echoes', 'Progress', and 'Response', along with tracks like 'Speaker Attack,' 'Belo Horizonte,' and 'All I Got To Know,' have made significant contributions to the history of techno.

Kowalski's music productions and live performances have earned widespread acclaim from both dancefloor enthusiasts and discerning music critics alike. His remixes are highly sought after by icons such as Dave Gahan, Joris Voorn, Paul Kalkbrenner and Funk D´Void. This he balances with a heavy touring schedule, appearing at major festivals including Awakenings, Time Warp, Mayday, Nature One, I Love Techno, Monegros, Aquasella, and many more.

In 2009, he launched his own label, Damage Music, as a platform for his own music and releases from artists he really admires. He has also released music on esteemed platforms such as Be As One, ARTS, Illegal Alien, Tronic, and Arkham Audio. His 'Cycles' LP on Mord stands as a testament to his ability to create timeless music, showcasing the enduring relevance and agility of his productions.

As techno continues to evolve, so too does Kowalski's artistry. He remains at the forefront of modern techno innovation with his principal releases under the name Alexander Kowalski. Additionally, he keeps the analog spirit of 90s techno alive through his DisX3 live and DJ performances, transporting new generations of dancers back to the genre's golden age.

Here are the first 2.5hours of the 6hour set i played at Bar Americas in Guadalajara, Mexico on the 18.06.16. The gig truly was one of my best gigs ever and I hope you enjoy the recording as much as I enjoyed the night. Another beautiful moment looped between the past, present and future at The Block Tel Aviv reminding me once again that the foundation of our scene, the club dance floor, should not be forgotten.  The night was a perfect synchronous moment between the audience and I, immersed together in warm frequencies emanating from a sound system impeccably curated by the clubs owner.  Nights like this, where we all disappear into the darkness together are what bought me to the dance floor in the first place. Here's four hours of pure modern Techno music, from my mind to yours!

Chris Liebing is synonymous with techno. His legacy is long assured, but his craft never stops evolving. Whether as label head, podcast curator, DJ or producer, he continues to challenge himself and his audience to explore new realms in the electronic world. And often ahead of the curve, too, from the early, hard-edged and loopy 90s sound which is back en vogue today, through his more stripped-back turn of the millennium minimalism and onto the cinematic atmospheres and broader alternative electronica of his latest albums on Mute. It's no stretch to say, then, that Chris Liebing's story is closely connected to the story of techno itself. 

Liebing is considered a global techno ambassador, but his ambitious album projects and direct club tracks excite and innovate as much as any new school star. A proudly forward-thinking attitude ensures that is the case as his DJ tools and studio setup constantly evolve. He continues to be an early adopter of emerging technology, too, just as he was with vinyl controllers, Traktor and when leading the way with full hybrid/live DJing. 

These days, Liebing incorporates an ever wider sphere of sound into his own work. After an eight-year break from full lengths, 2018's Burn Slow on Mute was a creative rebirth that received critical acclaim and confounded all expectations. It was a melancholic mediation on gothic moods, looming apocalyptic landscapes and optimistic broken-beat techno that drew from his childhood love of Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and the New Romantic movement. 

Remixes for Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp followed alongside a collaborative single with Charlotte De Witte, and 2021 brought a second album on Mute, Another Day. It found Liebing exploring all new ways of expressing both his euphoric and melodic side, all with high-grade technical skill and meticulous sonic craft with a range of collaborators from Miles Cooper Seaton to Polly Scattergood. This exceptional form continued into 2023 as he returned to the club with his Love Those Who Fight With Passion And Faith EP on CLR, a passionate and politically charged call to the dance floor that joined Liebing and Luke Slater’s remix of Depeche Mode’s iconic ‘Ghosts Again’ in the first half of the year. 

Born in Giessen and active ever since the 1990s, Liebing has always platformed the talent around him as much as himself: a long time before they were commonplace, he famously helmed his own CLR podcast. For many years, it was the scene's most influential series, with a who's who of international pioneers at the helm. After that came the equally important AM/FM radio show, but now following a hiatus, the CLR podcast is back and pushing a fresh techno agenda, as is his iconic label of the same name.

In its first chapter, CLR stood for Chris Liebing Records, then Create Learn Realize, and now Create Learn Repeat - a subtle evolution that is at the heart of everything Liebing does. The label will always be synonymous with exciting techno and is now back hosting parties and festival stages. 

Though his music is underpinned by pulsating menace and a stomping sense of drama, Liebing himself is friendly with a famous smile. It is the music that motivates him and the freedom that comes with increased experience. These days there are no limits, no expectations, but a continued love for the art and craft of techno that is taking him down all new creative pathways.
