Dirty Epic welcomes aboard @drumcell for its seventy-fifth episode of Amplify Series.

Drumcell was born as Moe Espinosa in Los Angeles’ San Gabriel Valley. Far away from the glamour and glitter of Hollywood, he cut his teeth growing up in a vibrant, culturally diverse neighborhood that still breeds inspiration for his work. San Gabriel Valley is also where he co-founded Droid Behavior in the early 2000s which lead to the infamous Interface warehouse series and lauded techno label Droid Recordings.

A classically trained musician in his youth, Moe came to circulate around the Noise, Punk and Industrial scene, playing guitar and singing in various bands until he discovered the early ‘90s L.A. rave scene. That was when he got in touch with some of the heroic synthesizers of techno’s early years. His enthusiasm for those synthetic sounds lead to a career as a Product Specialist at Native Instruments and to independent musician and engineer work across Los Angeles. Some of his studio contributions include work for Alessandro Cortini of Nine Inch Nails, Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Douglas McCarthy of Nitzer Ebb, Gary Numan, George Clinton, Kool Keith, Qbert, and Cut Chemist.

By then, Moe was chuffed to pursue his own productions. When he handed out his first self-produced, self- pressed vinyls at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001, he heard them being played from the festival stages the very next day. Since then, he has released original productions or remixed tracks on DROID, CLR, Electric Deluxe, Dystopian, Torque, Silent Steps, Blank Code, Ibadan, Detroit Underground, and much more. This style has caught the attention of many of the world’s top techno jocks, with strong track support from the likes of Luke Slater, Speedy J, and Chris Leibing. This style has also reached numerous prestigious international clubs and festivals. From Berlin's techno mecca Berghain to the main stage of The Movement in Detroit to North American nightclubs like Output and Stereo to festivals across Europe, Latin America, Japan and Australia - Drumcell’s sound can be heard around the world.

In 2016, Drumcell debuted his ambient project HYPOXIA on his experimental label BL_K NOISE. Inspired by science fiction soundtracks and the sounds of artists like John Carpenter, Wendy Carlos, Goblin and Vangelis, the Hypoxia release steps away from the dance floor and into a broader space of contemplative drama and rich texture. Producing infinite movement with his Buchla and Eurorack systems, Hypoxia all hardware performance has been heard at highly curated atmospheres from Berghain in Berlin to Brooklyn’s Greyscale Series at Output to pop-up concerts on the LA River.

Drumcell explores and discovers the analogue world as much as the digital world of music production, to finally combine them into his very own raw, suspenseful and hypnotic style. Influenced by a myriad of music as well as science fiction and machines, he has developed an addiction to analog synthesis which has led to ceaseless experiments in his studio in search of new, mind-expanding sounds. As one of the most esoteric techno artists in North America, his sound disregards genre limitations and is everything but conventional techno.

Hey peeps,

here's my 3-hour closing set at ORPHIC. This was a really special one for me as I've been going to the Orphic parties quite a bit. From the first time visiting I wanted to play here. The crowd and vibe at these parties is zero to none, and the organisation is a lovely group of people with a very community-based mindset. 

I wanted to do something special, and I think you can hear that in this set. It's a very hypnotic and heavy set, ranging from very emotive to heavy dark tracks, with a lot of layering going on. There's a few small moments that are slightly messy as I was constantly playing with multiple decks at once, but that makes it human ;). The recording cut out at 2:50:00, so I edited the last few tracks in to ensure a safe landing after 3 hours. 

Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did playing this.

"The recording was created with the intention of fostering a connection with the audience by replicating the energetic atmosphere typically found in a club setting. Recorded in Paris on December 2nd. My favorite track from the set (and of all time) is “Energetix by Sterac aka Scorp” because I believe it truly embodies my vibe and personality. I often play it during the peak moments of my sets. This record carries an incredible energy, which is no surprise considering its title".

Gianluca Caiati, better known by his stage name Kaiser, is an esteemed DJ specialising in electronic music, particularly in the genre of techno. Born and raised in Southern Italy, Kaiser's journey in the world of music has taken him from his humble beginnings to the city of Berlin, where he currently resides. 
From a young age, Kaiser displayed a natural inclination towards music. He was captivated by the power of electronic sounds and the immersive experience they created. As he explored the realms of techno, he quickly found his calling and began honing his skills as a DJ and producer.
Kaiser's talent and dedication did not go unnoticed, and he soon caught the attention of the electronic music scene. His unique style, blending hypnotic rhythms with pulsating bass-lines, made him a sought-after performer in clubs and festivals around. The energy and intensity of his sets earned him a loyal following and established his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the industry.
Driven by a relentless passion for music and a desire to push boundaries, Kaiser made the bold decision to relocate to Berlin, a city renowned for its thriving techno scene. It was a move that would prove to be a pivotal moment in his career. Berlin's vibrant and diverse nightlife became Kaiser's playground, offering him endless opportunities to immerse himself in the music that fuelled his soul.
Inspired by the city's creative energy, Kaiser channeled his passion into establishing his own record label, K S R (Kaiser Sound Records). With K S R, he aimed to create a platform for emerging talent and to curate exceptional techno releases that would resonate with electronic music enthusiasts worldwide. The label quickly gained recognition for its distinctive sound and became a respected name within the industry.
Gianluca’s dedication to his craft extends far beyond his performances and label. He is deeply involved in the music community, constantly seeking out collaborations with fellow artists and pushing the boundaries of his own creativity. His commitment to his art is evident in the meticulous attention he pays to each track he produces and the emotional depth he infuses into his sets.
As Kaiser continues to make his mark on the global techno scene, he remains rooted in his love for the club. Whether he is behind the decks, working in the studio or dancing in the dance floor, Kaiser's passion for electronic music shines through, leaving an indelible imprint on the hearts and minds of those who have the pleasure of witnessing his sonic journey.

Chris Liebing is synonymous with techno. His legacy is long assured, but his craft never stops evolving. Whether as label head, podcast curator, DJ or producer, he continues to challenge himself and his audience to explore new realms in the electronic world. And often ahead of the curve, too, from the early, hard-edged and loopy 90s sound which is back en vogue today, through his more stripped-back turn of the millennium minimalism and onto the cinematic atmospheres and broader alternative electronica of his latest albums on Mute. It's no stretch to say, then, that Chris Liebing's story is closely connected to the story of techno itself. 

Liebing is considered a global techno ambassador, but his ambitious album projects and direct club tracks excite and innovate as much as any new school star. A proudly forward-thinking attitude ensures that is the case as his DJ tools and studio setup constantly evolve. He continues to be an early adopter of emerging technology, too, just as he was with vinyl controllers, Traktor and when leading the way with full hybrid/live DJing. 

These days, Liebing incorporates an ever wider sphere of sound into his own work. After an eight-year break from full lengths, 2018's Burn Slow on Mute was a creative rebirth that received critical acclaim and confounded all expectations. It was a melancholic mediation on gothic moods, looming apocalyptic landscapes and optimistic broken-beat techno that drew from his childhood love of Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and the New Romantic movement. 

Remixes for Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp followed alongside a collaborative single with Charlotte De Witte, and 2021 brought a second album on Mute, Another Day. It found Liebing exploring all new ways of expressing both his euphoric and melodic side, all with high-grade technical skill and meticulous sonic craft with a range of collaborators from Miles Cooper Seaton to Polly Scattergood. This exceptional form continued into 2023 as he returned to the club with his Love Those Who Fight With Passion And Faith EP on CLR, a passionate and politically charged call to the dance floor that joined Liebing and Luke Slater’s remix of Depeche Mode’s iconic ‘Ghosts Again’ in the first half of the year. 

Born in Giessen and active ever since the 1990s, Liebing has always platformed the talent around him as much as himself: a long time before they were commonplace, he famously helmed his own CLR podcast. For many years, it was the scene's most influential series, with a who's who of international pioneers at the helm. After that came the equally important AM/FM radio show, but now following a hiatus, the CLR podcast is back and pushing a fresh techno agenda, as is his iconic label of the same name.

In its first chapter, CLR stood for Chris Liebing Records, then Create Learn Realize, and now Create Learn Repeat - a subtle evolution that is at the heart of everything Liebing does. The label will always be synonymous with exciting techno and is now back hosting parties and festival stages. 

Though his music is underpinned by pulsating menace and a stomping sense of drama, Liebing himself is friendly with a famous smile. It is the music that motivates him and the freedom that comes with increased experience. These days there are no limits, no expectations, but a continued love for the art and craft of techno that is taking him down all new creative pathways.
