If I Were a Spaceman

I wrote this short work a while back and recently had the opportunity to re-record the solo cello part (I am the cellist and pianist in the recording)with a full string section for Clockwork Sessions in Glasgow. The work itself was written during lockdown with a view to expressing the brittle nature of our planet and society during that time. Not much seems to have changed...

The ideas at the beginning of the composition of this song just flowed out of me. However, there seems to be an infinite variety of topics.

Even if many things are going wrong in the world, it is far from me to raise my finger in warning. I myself do many things wrong of which I know that it is actually not okay.

so i deleted everything that seemed too concrete to me. In the end, I only used the beautiful abstract lyric parts.

How could this happen that we
- Lost our skills in empathy
Why haven't we created a 
-Sophisticated strategy?
Lost how to read the stars above you 
in this bright sparkling night 
Stuck in the deepest forest can‘t name 
one tree around to find a trace
How can we heal our scars and not
renew them in another fight

Give us an hour of rest
to seek together for the best 
side of the trees where the moss grows
that leads us back to those
important things in life we’ve lost
from the day when our lives are crossed
and our agonizing sought seemed to be over and we..

Part II.
How can we evolve so far when we.. 
-Fail to grasp the natures way 
Why haven’t we protect with all our
power, strength and energy
to blind to see and recognize
the lies we‘ve build around ourselves
rather glide down the hills on planks
till every thing that grew and thrived 
- was expelled
Why do we crave the thrill
of sawing off the branch we are all sitting on?

Without a compass or a map
we won’t escape out of this trap
we are off course 
and lost our bearings with this crap
Civilization is the word
for devastation of our living world
any further hesitation is irrevocable
