My Beautiful Prison

July 2021, written quite quickly, I’d taken a picture of the blue house and wanted to write a song with that title, simple as that!

Blue House

Sometimes you feel divorced from everything, like everyone is going about their lives but you’re just watching from afar.  Written in 1995, but I still get that feeling sometimes even now.

Something To Liken It To

This took a long time to write.  I came up with the chord sequence and melody some time in 1997, there were some lyrics for a short while, but I scrapped them.  Later I sang the words “so loved” to part of it, then nothing more for a long time.  Finally in January 2022 in a sudden burst, I wrote the rest of the lyrics and recorded it.  I’m pleased with this one, it’s love and grief and how sometimes they feel the same.

So Loved

Of course I’ll come to your shindig, but only if you’re going to be there too.  I wrote this in 1998 after I’d been to a lot of weddings.  I’ve always liked the chord sequence to this, it makes me happy to play it.

Invitation

In 1995 I misheard the Sheryl Crow song “Solidify” as soul is defined.  Then I got a dictionary, a thesaurus, picked up my guitar and 15 minutes later I had this, minus the middle section which I added in 2007.

How can one person make you feel like this?!  Written in 1992 when my voice was younger and could hit those high notes.  At the time I was in a band and we played this as a rock track which I rather liked but this demo is closer to what I originally had in mind I think.  Demo recorded using GarageBand on my iPad.

This Is All

A simple musical interlude that describes the view of a city as viewed from the vantage of a quiet hilltop with all the sounds of industry reduced to distant hums and clangs.  The main melody is meant to represent nature, maybe birds winging far overhead.  Recorded using GarageBand on my iPhone.

The City from the Hill

This was built up entirely  by utilising sounds available on GarageBand with the exception of the guitar.   I liked the sweep and depth of it and felt it needed a universal, astronomical theme lyrically.  The words were culled from a poem I wrote several years ago describing an evening laying on the lawn looking at the stars, I thought they fit well.  For the harmonies my aim was to emulate the music of John Tavener, in particular Song for Athene which has beautiful soaring harmonies, ethereal and angelic.

I had a nightmare then wrote this song, although it isn’t actually about the nightmare I had.  Maybe the real bad dream would be a world with nothing worthwhile happening in it.

These tracks are all demos of songs that I have written over the last 30+ years, in that time I’ve filled a couple of exercise books with a considerable back catalogue of music.  The songs here are all recorded using my 28 year old Washburn guitar and GarageBand on my iPad with a cheap mic in my front room usually with a cup of coffee.  I hope you like them 🙂
