Just one take, purely improvisation the piano having a conversation – I went into the music room to shut everything down before going to bed and just sat at the piano and played. Fortunately, I had the foresight to press the record button, this is what transpired, not perfect but true feeling.

Whatever the weather we regularly walk the coastal promenade between Folkestone and Hythe. Winter summer and all times in-between. It never disappoints, every time we go along the coast, the beach, the sea and sky are always offering a different experience. It’s always a time to reflect, contemplate or generally catch up with life.

When We Are Beside The Sea

When I was young, I lived in the country and in the summer, I loved to be outside as the dawn broke at four in the morning. It’s so peaceful, quiet and unspoilt by the noise of human activity.  This piece reminds me of those times.

A variation on a Chopin Prelude Cmin Op 28 No 20 - Thanks to @Eowyn for pointing out my mistake identifying the key. It's been a long time since I played this from the music and a few notes have definitely changed from the original, it is a variation of course!!!

This is a contemplative piece with mood swings. Sometimes however hard you try the outcome seems pre-determined and out of your control. Each section seems to reflect on a situation and then the realisation dawns, that it just “Came To Be”

An improvised composition created whilst experimenting with the Native Instruments Giant VST piano. It seemed to compliment the ideas that were being generated at the time.
Why the title?  I hear the words in the melody, sometimes what seems so important in life and must be achieved suddenly becomes far less important a feeling of liberation.

What Does It Matter Anyway

In my early years I spent a lot of time in the country - hours spent cycling with friends through deserted country lanes, helping and riding mother's horses and later earning my pocket money shifting bales of hay and straw in the summer. Plenty of time to contemplate the future. These are some of the thoughts that this melody evokes for me.

This composition started as an experiment in using virtual instruments and an early attempt (in fact first attempt) at orchestration. It is very rough around the edges and highlights the need for me to improve my mixing skills, but I think it has something raw about it. I hope you find it interesting to listen to.

Uprising Twenty - Two

This piece like so many started as an accident, it sat in my "Songs to develop" folder for a while. At the time of finalising we were talking about insomnia and so the title was born. It even brings tears to my eyes!

Lonely In The Night

This song is dedicated to my two nieces who sadly lost their mother back in 1999. In Cherry’s last few weeks, we regularly visited her and on one occasion I sat at the piano and came up with a few chords that have always remained with me and reminded me of that sad time. It has taken more than twenty years to get it to a point that I am happy with the song and so, at last here it is. 

It has been named “Cherry Blossom” but it could have been named “Why Did You Have to Leave Us Way too Soon” words that I hear in the melody, but I felt that was too long for a title, so compromised and made it a sub-title. I hope you enjoy the final recording.

Solo piano composition with rolling arpeggios on Noire Felt piano with plenty of atmospheric reverb and delay. It's origins date back to the 1980s but has been dusted off and bought up to date for YouTube and SoundCloud and to be shared and hopefully enjoyed. Whilst finalising the track I was trying to decide on the cover art and looking though my various images I found this one by my 10-year-old grand-daughter and it just seemed to fit the composition, so the title "Dawn" was born and an experimental video has been created.

Going To A Party (Short)

A short piece of music where each diatonic chord should be preceded by its secondary dominant chord. the choice of instrumentation was optional in this case I used orchestral patches. More work needs to be done to make them sound more realistic I think.

Everyone knows that the British love their dogs, this little dog was no exception. Bloomer was born in Athens and lived there with my daughter for many happy years. She was quite a little character, so it was a great shame when we lost her a few years ago.

When I wrote this song, I could hear the two syllables of her name resonating in my head, so this became a song to remember her by, I hope you enjoy it.

For A Little Shaggy Dog

This is an experimental track for a recent challenge which was to create a short piece of music using only two monophonic lines in the form of a cannon. The result is a little weird, but it does have an interesting rhythm to it. Just a bit of fun, I hope you enjoy it.

Imagine you are on a peaceful train journey travelling through the countryside, fields, woods and forests, wistfully thinking about your loved ones, listening to the melody, you are dreaming and reflective. The Soprano Waltz It’s Never Too Late" is a simple song; its working title was The Soprano Waltz the melody was accidentally produced whilst experimenting with a VST soprano voice in my recording software and the Waltz of course from its 3/4 time signature.

Having skied down the Austrian mountains in the winter we decided to visit the same area for a break in the summer. We took the chair lift to the top and meandered our way back down paths not visible before. There were mountain cabins whose roofs we must have skied over, goats precariously balancing on ledges, cool fresh air and few people en-route through the secluded pine woodlands. A wonderful holiday - this song is a great reminder of that time.

In my early years I took piano lessons, regretfully I stopped them in my teens. I've always had a piano in the house and over the years have composed a number of songs (without words). What’s important to me is the melodic nature of the pieces and I wanted to share them with others. The origins of the music are probably influenced by my early classical lessons, Chopin and Schubert to name a couple. I love Liszt’s Hungarian and Rachmaninoff’s Russian styles but sadly my technical ability hampers the inclusion of their techniques.
Today’s home recording software allows many opportunities to develop compositions using other instruments to compliment the piano however, using the software has been a challenge, trying to get the “right” sound for the piano has been the most difficult part of the process. I’m slowly learning and will probably remix some of my current tracks as my experience grows.
Once I have recorded my heritage pieces, I plan to write a new selection of music predominantly piano but also experimenting with more or different instruments, watch this space!
