Ibibio Sound Machine are set to release their debut LP through Soundway Records. Fronted by British / Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, they combine elements of West African highlife, disco, post-punk & psychedelic electro soul. Preceded by the pulsating first single 'Let's Dance', ‘Ibibio Sound Machine’ will be released 17th March.

Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's South-Eastern Nigerian Ibibio language form the creative lyrical fabric of the album. A large dose of electronic elements and an approach as influenced by London as much as by West Africa, give the vocals and guitar lines space to breath without being overwhelmed.

From the banging sub-bass of 'Lets Dance' to the spiritual, gospel-tinged notes of the album's opening track 'Voice of the Bird', the band have turned in a dynamic and, at times, beautiful take on modern afro-soul music.

The 8-piece live band made their official live debut at this year's Transmusicales in France and will be a name to look out for in 2014.

Soundway Records present a special summer tribute double a-side 12" with two tracks from African musicians that both passed away within a couple of months of each other at the end of 2013 / start of 2014. Both tracks are perfect summer tropical DJ fodder for the dancefloor.

On the first side South African singer Shaluza Max's massive Mashkandi / house anthem from 2002 gets a first release on vinyl. This track was a huge hit in South Africa and around the world on its release. With a soaring Zulu vocal and big sound it's a fitting reminder of a very talented musician who worked as a very well respected producer, composer and arranger. He died tragically young at the age of 47 in January of 2014.

On the flip we drop a fairly unknown track from the mid 1980s from one of the biggest names in African music, Tabu Ley Rochereau. A kind of almost balearic proto-house congolese pop cut with drum machines and trademark sweet congo horn section, Hafi Deo is a beautiful track that fell into obscurity outside The Congo by perhaps being too smooth for the 'world music' crowd in the mid 80s. Tabu Ley passed away in November 2013 in his late 70s with over 250 albums and 3000 songs to his name. A true pioneer of the congolese soukous sound, he was also one of the most influential African musicians of his generation.

This edit (originally created in 2008 for my dj sets) was supposed to be included on the recently released third Autonomous Africa 12". Unfortunately I didn't get permission to use it in time for that release but permission has now been given, so rather than wait for AA 004 in 2015 it is going to come out as a limited edition hand stamped 10" as soon as possible. All proceeds will once again go to the Mtandika mission in Tanzania - http://www.actioninafrica.org/about-mtandika.php

This is a funky fusion dance remake, of The Legendary Orlando Julius' classic tune from the '70's titled "Osika Ranti". The remix was produced by Nigerian Music Producer & Female Rapper Blaise and features upcoming music talent Pegasus.

Side A features Jeancy's "U Turn me On", an 808 driven Haitian-Canadian dubbed out disco boogie anthem that's sure to drive crowds manic. Side B features two spoken word cult future classics by the mysterious Hawaiin mystic Astarius. "Ancient Times Part 1 and 2" are both hypnotic affirming mantras, soaked in reverb and twisted in pitch. It's sure to melt brains into a dervish twirl.

The mix that started it all. Makossa Classics initially came about as a 30 minute demo that I used to give to venues and promoters when I was looking for gigs. The mix consisted of some of my favorite songs I was playing at a new Tuesday weekly in Oakland called "Makossa" with my partner Joe Quixx. I thought the types of music we were mixing and the way we played them were unique and I wanted to capture that. I always got a good response when I would play the demo for friends so on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of our Makossa party I decided to add 30 more minutes and make it an official mix as a giveaway at the party. Long story short the response was great, Makossa traveled across the Bay and across the country to New York, and Vol. 2 came to light a couple of years later. For those that have only heard Vol. 2 and are hearing this for the first time I'm sure the voicemail intro will make a little more sense now. Hope you enjoy! -Wonway
