This song (which is two songs)  is a predominantly vocal experiment fooling around with the choral songs of Balkans by mixing "Ti Kako Ekana o Kaimenos" (folk song from Epirus) with  "Black is the Colour of My True Love's Hair" (scottish folk as it is covered by Nina Simone)

Ramrock Red Records are delighted to be releasing this outstanding remix EP ‘Uptown Bridges’ from Edinburgh’s very own Movers International. Executive producer of the original version of ‘Uptown Bridges’, Joseph Malik , took the track from his ‘Stranger Things’ collaborative LP and handed it over to Gavin and James to rework in their inimitable Movers International style. The result is a beautiful afro futurist remix with wonderful psychedelic dance overtones featuring the brooding vocals of Einstein Madiro, Paulo Riddle’s intricate percussion, Steven Christie’s keyboards weaving into the composition and the compelling horns of Chris Greive and Colin Steele. As is often the case at Ramrock Records, the infamous yet elusive D.Foe heard the track and said that they’d love to remix the remix, adding their signature dance chaos to the already brilliant track. Finally, James and Gavin join forces with ‘bone maestro, Chris Greive to revisit their track, ‘Lip Bam (Revisited)’, changing up the mood to a slightly sinister, acidic, cinematic instrumental. Forming Movers International has been the perfect opportunity for the duo to explore a more organic recording style, compared to the techno roots of Main Ingredient. Working with a horn section, guitars, vocals and a live percussionist, this solid platform of musicality forms the basis of their debut ‘Uptown Bridges’ EP – available on Bandcamp. Movers International are DJ/production duo Jimmy Jammin’ and Gavin Fort, born out of Main Ingredient, an Edinburgh based collective known for throwing warehouse parties, performing live with analogue machines, sharing a stage with Peggy Gou, collaborating on the giant 909 featured at Bestival, working on sound design for computer games, multimedia performances based on the psychoactive properties of mushrooms at the Edinburgh Science Festival, performing as part of Edinburgh’s illustrious Easter Road Northern Soul Band and working with fellow musicians and producers such as Digital Liquid, Perrier Jazz Award winner Niki King and most recently with jazz singer Ariane Mamon.  As Main Ingredient, they released music on Paradise Palms, New Teeth and Bullet:dodge Records, as well as remixing the likes of Marshall Jefferson and Robert Owens

Ladies and Gentlemen, lads and lasses, Ramrock Red Records are proud to present the all-star Edinburgh collective ‘Out of The Ordinary’ with their first LP ‘Stranger Things Have Happened’. 

Out Of The Ordinary are an Edinburgh based hive mind collective. For the ‘Stranger Things Have Happened’ LP project, Joseph Malik decided to sit firmly in the producer’s chair and team up once again with the co-writers and production ‘dream’ team of arranger Chris Greive and co-producers Saleem Andrew McGroarty and David Donnelly to create an open love letter to Edinburgh, the city they all love. Chris Greive began his musical life in Australia obtaining a BMus Jazz degree before relocating to Scotland in 2000 where he lectures at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (Glasgow, UK) and is Lead Trombone of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. He is constantly in demand as arranger (Eddi Reader 'Cavalier' 2018) and many other projects including wife Becc Sanderson Sextet 'Bows to Bowie' album (for release on Ramrock Red Records 2019). Chris’s award-winning NeWt trio will also release a new album (recorded in Toronto Nov 2018) of their 'Electric Trombone' led Prog-Jazz and his most recent collaborations with Joseph Mailk, lending his phenomenal performer, arranger and production skills to the ‘Diverse Part 2’ and ‘Stranger Things Have Happened’ LP projects. Without Chris’s arrangement + executive production contributions to this album, it wouldn’t have got made. Steven Christie is a keyboard player with over 30 years’ experience of recording, playing live and studio production. He can be heard on releases from the Chimes, Botany 5 and the Proclaimers who he currently tours with. He first collaborated with Joseph Malik on the 1993 Blacka’nized release ‘Music For Your Mind’ EP and since then, Steven and Joseph have worked closely together on many productions, culminating with the latest project, ‘Stranger Things Have Happened’ and without Steven’s contribution to this album, it wouldn’t have got made. David ‘Demus’ Donnelly is a virtual one-man band and his brilliantly inventive guitar and mandolin work, plus the odd basso profundo counter-harmony is why he has been the backbone of many a Scottish production. His longstanding producer/songwriter partnership with Joseph Malik has showcased Demus skills on milestone LPs ‘Diverse Part 1’ in 2002, ‘Aquarius’ and ‘Diverse Part 2’ in 2018. ‘Stranger Things Have Happened’ is the pinnacle and distillation of the accumulated experience of Scotland’s most talented and respected musicians. Saleem Andrew McGroarty has been part of the Edinburgh music scene for over 30 years, starting out as a DJ at Edinburgh’s key club nights including The Hooch, Chocolate City, Seen and the illustrious Lizzard Lounge. The 90’s saw Saleem releasing a track on Mo Wax and currently he is producing under the ‘Sound Signals’ moniker. Now, Saleem’s friendship + musical collaboration with Joseph Malik, which stretches back to 1988, continues to flourish on LPs ‘Diverse Part 2’ and now ‘Stranger Things Have Happened’.

This is the third single from the Manuel Valera New Cuban Express Big Band's debut album, 'José Martí En Nueva York.'

The album opens with a sombre Danzón, a Cuban dance style. Valera’s pensive melody is sung by Camila Meza over a lush bed woodwinds, as she sings Martí‘s words that reflect on the longing that immigrants feel for their homeland. The piece develops into a more modern uptempo Latin jazz feel, with Meza returning in a more optimistic mood, before solos by saxophonist Roman Filiu and trombonist Andy Clausen.

Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Manuel Valera (Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Smith) presents the dynamic debut of his New Cuban Express Big Band. Inspired by José Martí, the famed Cuban writer and independence hero, José Martí En Nueva York features Valera’s song cycle of original music based on nine poems from Martí’s seminal 1891 collection, “Versos Sencillos.”

Addressing a range of political and societal issues that are relevant even today, the texts are set for two unique vocalists, Sofia Rei and Camila Meza. Valera uses the broad palette of the big band to express a wide breadth of moods and emotions, touching on traditional Cuban music styles (Danzón, bolero) as well as modern Latin jazz to give Martí’s poetry new life. 

The album’s large ensemble features some of New York’s best creative musicians, including standout soloists Michael Rodriguez, Roman Filiu, Joel Frahm, and Mauricio Herrera. Produced by Kabir Sehgal and Doug Davis, the album is modern big band jazz with a message. Born out of the crisis of Valera’s loss of his wife to cancer last year, Jose Marti en Nueva York is a personal cry for freedom, justice, and an expression of passion.
