With his latest record, Notwist singer & guitar player, film soundtracker and label boss Markus Acher, aka Rayon, offers up a sparse, intoxicating LP of instrumentals.
As the name suggests, the spaces between notes here are treated with as much gravity as the notes themselves – arpeggios spiralling upwards, conflicting yet interlocking in a dizzying overlap of time signatures.
An obvious reference point is Javanese gamelan, with its ensemble of hand-beaten metallophones and bamboo flutes, pulling in all directions at once and yet, like a starling murmuration, maintaining shape as one, rippling whole.
Eschewing electronic equipment, the title track sees marimbaphone, piano and vibraphone appearing to mimic a delay pedal, giving the effect of rain falling with odd regiment into a singing bowl.
This melancholy but weirdly uplifting arrangement surfaces throughout the record, punctuated by mossy synth hums and subterranean rustling. Like much of Rayon’s work, “A Beat of Silence” beams across like a soundtrack for some forgotten documentary: dusty archive footage of cities being built and eroded in time-lapse seeming to flicker across the screen.

Closing tracks “To the Quiet”, a tentative, almost impossibly fragile ballad, and “Kona”, a stretched and mangled wash of orchestral drone akin to Plinth or Edmund Finnis, leave the listener fully enveloped, as this incredibly sensitive work draws to a close.

Gareth Dickson is ghostlike. From the dark outskirts of Glasgow he has sent three studio studio albums in to the world - Collected Recordings (2009), The Dance (2010) and Quite A Way Away (2012). These albums have bewitched a growing inner circle, including some of the most innovative musicians around today - Juana Molina and Vashti Bunyan to name just two. Gareth has been the only constant member of Vashti’s touring outfit over the past ten years and latterly they have stripped down to a duet on their worldwide travels. Vashti indeed makes a spectral apparition on the first track of Gareth’s new album Orwell Court.

Gareth Dickson’s music is both beautiful and dark. A quiet Scottish melancholy underpinned by a grace and ethereal purity paired with a unique impression where the delicacy of Nick Drake mixes with the openness and space Brian Eno. Gareth’s music is often stripped down to the spare elements of voice and acoustic guitar, but a complex and mysterious music hides beneath the surface, demanding but generous and surprising. Clearly picking up where his previous albums left off, Gareth throws in a few surprises. Gleaned from his time spent touring and experimenting between albums the addition of a drum kit, some keyboards and guest vocalists enrich the palette. But fear not, these elements, while previously unheard of in his music, are approached with the subtlety that his listeners expect. They are a texture that adds dimension throughout the album. The hush is still there in its most genuine form.

In the image of it’s author, on the brink of falling in to juvenille delinqueny, Gareth took a straighter path and ended up on the university trampoline team while studying aerospace engineering. Now he spends his days eating vegan snacks, knows how to choose a good lawyer, and sports his normcore t-shirts on the tennis courts of Glasgow’s Southside. At night he presses his red Doc Martens a little harder on the accelerator of his Rover 75 on highways where they drive on the left. Everything is only a pretext to fuel his visceral need of creation, as attested by his superglued nails cared for as extensions of his guitar. Accuracy and uniqueness are at the heart of his artistic process. He establishes a relationship to time outwith the current mad and superficial pace of our own. His music is a form of modern classicism, by a man constantly aware that perfection lies shrouded in mists of uncertainty and ambiguity. It is above all a question of obsession and atmosphere. And it is a unwaveringly sublime cover of this Joy Division title that closes Orwell Court. Past revisited, and behind that, transcendence.

Team Ghost - The Riser

Four-piece surf rock band The Van T’s, are back with a bang as they get set to release their reverb-drenched single Fun Garçon, out on 25th November via Bloc+Music.

2016 has been a breakout year for the Glaswegian surf-rock band having released their EP A Coming of Age to critical acclaim in July. Gaining premiere’s on Huw Stephens BBC Radio Introducing show, Noisey, Consequence of Sound and Clash Magazine the band’s name began to resonate from the UK to the US and beyond. 

Now, the four-piece look set to pick up exactly where they left off with the release of single Fun Garçon. The track encapsulates all the great elements of a band who exude talent way beyond their youthfulness; relentless guitar washes over the listener like the sound of a crashing wave, as the duel vocals of twin sisters Hannah(guitar, vocals) and Chloe Van Thompson (guitar, vocals) amplify the diner-like retro feel the song already has all fused together beautifully by the tight rhythm section headed up by Joanne Forbes (bass) and Shaun Hood (drums).

The release of Fun Garçon will complete what has been a wonderful year for the band. Support slots with Yuckand Rat Boy, who personally chose the band to play, were followed by a stellar festival season which saw the band play T in The Park’s BBC Introducing stage, Electric Fields, Wide Days and Stag and Dagger. They also picked up further support form the likes of The Scotsman, Beat Surrender, Backseat Mafia, Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing Scotland, where they recently performed a superb live session, and culminated in a nomination at this years Scottish Alternative Music Awards.

Fun Garçon by The Van T’s is due for release on 25th November 2016 via Bloc+Music.

Niemoc is an instrumental trio from Zielona Gora in South-West Poland; they label themselves as a "post-wave" band, and indeed one can find traces of all sorts of influences - from New Order's bass hooks and Durutti Column's shimmering guitars to analogue roughness of Chicago house. Ptaki's posthumous rework premiered here today is a sure-shot Summer night anthem, complete with ethereal vocal sample and epic breakdown.
