Some records are birthed through countless months or even years of studio hard yaka; drafts, followed by re-drafts, an eternal process of searching for that money shot musical moment.  Then there are albums that simply pour out of the collective minds of its creators – more of a stream of consciousness and musical expressions that strategic beat creation. 

For best friends and long time collaborators Matt Edwards (aka Radio Slave) and Thomas Gandey (aka Cagedbaby and producer). Matom began as a one off project to create an hour of music to celebrate the iconic Hansa recording studios in Berlin, a space that’s seen everyone from David Bowie and Iggy Pop to Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno.  

Says Edwards “The initial music was loosely based around the recording of David Bowie’s ‘Low’ and the works of Iggy Pop and I wanted to create these soundscapes that would allow Thomas to improvise and we managed to come up with seven songs in two days.”

From this auspicious beginning the project continued to pick up pace and the pair soon performed in Warsaw alongside revered Kosmiche figurehead Manuel Gottsching and a few months later at the Name festival in Lille, France. 

Splitting time between Gandey’s home and studio outside Bordeaux and Edward’s studio in Kreuzberg, Berlin, the pair continued to create. The duo adopted a free-flow approach to production, with Gandey talking warmly about creating sounds for the Matom Project.  They’d cook together, eat fine food, and then sit down to work on the music together. 

Gandey describes Edwards as the “master of minimal”, building up the soundscapes and beats before Thomas filled out the compositions with various keyboards form his collection including a Fender Rhodes, Moog Voyager, Clavia Nords, Roland Drum Machines and live percussion and finally another collaborator Paul Sandrone would improvise on guitar at the final stages of production. 

The entire essence of Matom’s sounds is based around live takes and recorded snippets of conversations and ambiences from their tours, with no MIDI or samples so when they joined the line up for the Pyramids of Mars label showcase at Berghain’s Kantine it was a seamless transition from studio to stage.  Their last gig was once again for the Red Bull Music Academy in Miami WMC 2014 to perform the finished album for the people who first inspired and supported the project. 

And so Matom’s ‘Love Mistakes’ is signed sealed and delivered, a work Gandey describes as “a culmination of our combined skills and reflecting its contrasting environments, a dualism between the cosmic serenity of the vineyards in his south of France retreat and the gritty urban cityscapes of Berlin’s bohemia.”

1.	Crossroads – The album opens with Crossroads, which sets the scene, a beatless dystopian ambient soundscape featuring Rhodes.

2.	Experiment 1 Variation 3 – As the name suggest we had a lot of tracks to choose from, this one based around one of the original improvised Piano sessions we recorded in Bordeaux.  Cuban Piano backs a driving drum, and one of the most fun to play live.
  
3.	Hansa – Named after the primary inspiration for the project. This is a paradise travelogue, written on Rhodes, a percussive playground.

4.	Warsaw – Named and written for our 2nd live performance, very much inspired by Berlin and cruising along the rivers. 

5.	Zazu – Another meditative ambient work, inspired by early Concrete musique and tribal percussion and mostly reversed, modular synthesis and sequencers back the Rhodes.

6.	Piano 2 Variation 4 – Piece for Solo Piano using live looping, building and diminishing, an ideal club tool 

7.	Experiment 7 Variation 2 – Middle Eastern Piano heavily delayed with string swells.

8.	Love Mistakes – The title track of the album, electronic pads, Rhodes and broken groove.

Die Vögel are back.
Almost two years after their sensational debut release‚ Blaue Moschee, the arena rocking EP that’s still a permanent fixture in Sven Väth’s record bag, Die Vögel have laid another milestone in the history of club music - the Fratzengulasch EP.
Ground breaking, surreal and captivatingly timeless, this dance music doesn’t give a damn about the laws of gravity and the monotony of everyday routines. 

For some reason or another, there seems to be a sort of restricting fence around the electronic dance music scene at the moment. In true Trojan style, Die Vögel batter and ram the wall until a hole appears; a hole big enough for all the gleely squealing party people to crawl through. Out and on to freedom! It’s a brave new world and help is at hand for the weary of ear. Listen in to the dream-like canons, freely dissonant brass orchestrations and hypnotic-psychedelic beats.

The arrangements are clever, without relying on samples and tried and tested techniques. Off they stroll, Mense Reents and Jakobus Siebels, breathing in the fresh air, enjoying a clear view of a history of nocturnal dance music that goes back beyond 1986 and Chicago and is today international electronic folklore.
It was the machines that taught Die Vögel duo to play their instruments in a different way and from them the machines have learned what makes a musician tick.

That’s how songs like ‚Fratzengulasch’ come about: A tribal meditation, and a beautiful canon sung by Jakobus and Ebba Durstewitz, otherwise known as the band Ja König Ja.

Or the glorious ‚Maikäferbenzin’: There are sub binaural sounds on this track that get your brain hemispheres swinging in perfect synchronicity, on a frequency generally only experienced when in a trance. And there they’re left, swinging away until the last third of the song where an abrupt saxophone break briefly interrupts, only to deliver the listener safely back into an absolute state of bliss and felicity.

Mense and Jakobus’ brilliant Pantha du Prince remix got people wondering but even before that the question cropped up: what is this music?
DJ Koze calls it ‚Sect Funk’.

For the first time on this planet Dial owner LAWRENCE shows up on an excursion to his beloved PAMPA imprint. The double feature "Kurama" presents two deepy enchanting anthems, a timeless vision of love. After touring around the globe with his new label mate DJ KOZE since ages, having the most successful release in Dial history with Kosi's Efdemin remix, sharing music with each other like crackbrained, it is not a big surprise for LAWRENCE to occur with two of his best pieces on PAMPA Records.

Well known for his releases on Mule Electronic, Ghostly International, Styrax and his own imprints Smallville, Dial and Laid, it was his first Mix CD on Cocoon Recordings "Timeless" which made Lawrence put some cats among the pigeons. With the new PAMPA again he has proved that the holy temple of deepness has to invite some flawy hypnotists once in a while to get clouded and shaken.

The number 09 is dedicated to two most famous experiences in Japan: The Kurama Mountain in Kyoto, one of the most amazing places on earth, and Oolong High, one of the most amazing drinks on earth- cold Oolong Tea on the rocks with a zip of japanese Shochu liquor. After KOZE and LAWRENCE had another few of these beverages again they started dreaming of this wonderful release.

It's been three years since Swiss producer Michel Cleis conjured a storm with “La Mezcla”, a Cadenza hit cemented into house canon as it was swiftly reissued by Strictly Rhythm, bringing the sabor latino into clubs worldwide. Some more 12”s and a number of high-profile remixes (going from tracey thorn to skunk anansie,for labels like rekids , bronswood or Aus) later, he's now teaming up with DJ Koze's crew for his next move: a colorful, crescendoing 12-minute tune that's ready to make a splash in your summer soundtrack.

“Mir a Nero” begins with a steady, upbeat kick underlying a simple piano arpeggio – like if Philip Glass make dance music – but then some accents of vibrant hand percussion loosen up the vibe, soon progressing into rhythmic layers that cause the energy to swell. By the 4-minute mark, a subtle, buzzing synth permeates the background, contrasting the track's overall organic feel, leading into the playful piano chords and colombian vocal hook. Simply put, this is Latin House with that anomalous Pampa Records swagger, drenched with flavor like Sangria-soaked mango.

Flip that baby over and you get “Amaranthus”, named after the famed flower that represents immortality. This piece stands as a color-negative of “Mir a Nero”, an unwavering stomp with just shadows of the piano sample heard earlier. Freeze-dried rather than sun-ripened, “Amaranthus” is a dubby, more technofied counterpart to the A-Side, crafted for deeper and darker moments on the dancefloor.
