Tracktion Hyperion modular chaos patch.  This VST is very conducive to generative chaotic patching.  I like it a lot.  No additional FX.

Learning to patch FM on this complex machine.  Here we have one carrier oscillator being modulated by another (silent) osc which is in turn modulated by a third (also silent) osc.  All are producing sine waves.  Each osc has a different note sequence, producing an array of different timbres. And then the Gotharman G-Ray filter comes into play.

All of the above took me a couple of hours; I ran about 50 different processes; all of the processes have default values but many parameters that can be varied in many ways, and automated over time as the processes run

CDP Process Demos

A joyous sustained explosion of imaginary sound occurring in the mind of a child drumming his fingers on the desk and daydreaming about sounds as vast and magical as he is starting to believe the world might be.  Based on Jim Hurley's wonderful Newschool11B11SDelay Reaktor ensemble, processed through Guitar Rig, with hurdy-gurdy-esque bass notes from Omnisphere2.  A bit of compression in Samplitude Pro and that's it.

Daydreaming In The Back Row

This etude is my first patch on the VRL.  One take, some editing, a little reverb, that's it.  No other effects or compression.  

The patch is based on the Manual Soundtrack patch in the manual, with some additional modulation.  There's a little layering between 5:10 and 5:40, but other than that you're hearing one single take at a time. 

It is a box of wonders.

Voltage Research Laboratory Exploration #1, 12302019

I made this track entirely with sounds generated by the Ellitone Multi Synth, available for $72 on Etsy.  It's wonderful.  It does FM and wavetables and it has a sequencer and I frankly don't how it manages all that because all the patch points, knobs and buttons are unlabeled, which suits me just fine.  I'm considering selling off synths I paid 20 times more for, and keeping this one.

I made random patches and sampled them into the Yamaha SU700, which I used to layer, loop and sequence the samples, and add delay and reverb.  I played one live take on the SU700 and then edited it in Samplitude, mostly to remove periods of clipping.  (I need to watch my levels better and leave more headroom.) No additional effects or shenanigans in Samplitude.

Maybe I don't need more gear.  Maybe I need less.  The Ellitone is a pleasing balance of accessible and cryptic.  I wonder what else it can do.

Temple Bells

A tribute to the New York Times article "What is Owed" by Pulitzer Prize winner Nikole Hannah-Jones which makes the case (very convincingly in my view) that without meaningful economic interventions, the multiple impacts of systemic racism will never be dismantled and transformed.  The image is one of those that accompanies the article, and is by Scott Olson.  Also, this track is my first jam ever on Native Instruments Maschine.

What Is Owed

This is not a guitar.  Nor is it two guitars.  It's one take of a synthesizer called Aalto by Madrona Labs.  I'm not "playing" it in any sense, although I am twiddling some knobs.  I drew a lot of automation curves and just let everything run.  

A little compression from Softube's magical Drawmer S73.  A little EQ.  That's it.

Two layers:  one is the Gotharman Tiny Little Deformer, and the other is the TLD routed through the "decaying reverb" channel on the Gecho Loopsynth.  EQ, compression (softube drawmer s73) and reverb in Samplitude Pro Studio.
