Program Notes: 
I wanted this piece to emulate the sun’s cycle. Each subsection within the piece is labeled with stages of the sun’s nightly movement, beginning with the sun setting. The piece, like many of my string works, takes major influence from Aaron Jay Kernis and his famous string quartet/orchestra piece, Musica Celestis.

Before I began composing, I spent my time as a vocalist. Born and raised in a Catholic household and son of a music director, I would often sing Schubert's Ave Maria for various masses or services. Even now as a music director in Charlevoix, MI, the piece is much-requested for parishioners' funerals. Even the other well-known versions — Caccini, Bach/Gounod, etc. — have been close to my upbringing, and close to my heart.

To give back to the world of sacred music, I composed my own Ave Maria for SATB Choir & Organ (piano version available). This piece was not commissioned by any specific ensemble. I simply wrote it to write it, as it's been on my "composer bucket-list" for as long as I can remember. However, I am grateful to my volunteer choir at St. Mary's in Charlevoix for workshopping it as I composed it, as well as the St. Francis High School students in Traverse City, MI, for giving it its world premiere.

Ave Maria: for SATB Choir and Organ

Virtual hip-hop group True Damage was born when K/DA’s lead rapper Akali (Soyeon of (G)I-dle) sought to bring together five up-and-coming artists in an ambitious, genre-defying collaboration. Thanks to the raw talents of Ekko (Thutmose, Duckwrth), Senna (Keke Palmer), and Qiyana (Becky G), the group struck a charged balance between their roots in trap, hip-hop, EDM, and R&B. Produced by selective hitmaker Yasuo, they forged a glitchy, cinematic anthem—a team project that incorporated each artist’s signature into the heart of the track.

True Damage’s “Giants” debuted at Worlds 2019 in Paris to worldwide acclaim, with the crew unveiling a collab with Louis Vuitton.

Christian J. Jesse (b. 1994) is an composer, arranger and sound engineer that resides in Milwaukee, WI. Christian has a M.M in Music from SMU, where he studied with Dr. Robert Frank & Dr. Kevin Hanlon. Christian received his B.A in Music Compositon and B.M. in Recording Industry from University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. Christian specializes in choral and orchestral work and is working towards a freelance career in Composition, composing for video games, animation, choir, and orchestra. In addition to freelance composing, Christian recently started Jesse Music Company with his wife, Abbigail.
