Jamie XX - Sleep Sound (Deepdrive Remix)

Diffrent keeps the boil on after the imminent release of the Greazus EP, this time back over to Europe for Belgian producer Digid’s return to Diffrent Music. After a two year wait, we’re proud to present to you his follow release after the 2014 collaboration “656” with M-Zine & Scepticz. 

The single leans towards Digid’s dubby slash sound-system style while exploring atmospheric textures, synthetic patterns. Lead track ’Space Rabbit’ sets the tone with a lazy swinging, almost hip-hop beat plodding along accompanied by a series of developing bass patterns and dreamy soundscapes. 

‘Cold Fever’ is a more heads down and nod type affair, again visiting some dreamy but eerie pads and arpeggiated patterns along with a steadily stomping drum beat which develops with percussion and top end breaks, all blended with a rich sub bass that turns to a distorted thud throughout the duration of the track.

From the city that brought you LSD comes a new album by Marco Papiro, a Swiss-Italian musician and graphic designer who has gained some notoriety with his album covers for the likes of Panda Bear and Sun Araw. "Automare" is Papiro's seventh solo album, recorded on 4-track cassette, on hard-disk, in public and in private, entirely self-produced and now released on Nikolaienko's Muscut label.

The five hauntingly evocative tracks offer a variety of atmospheres from surreal to arcane, from celestial to subaqueous. Synthetic sounds (some mature EMS, Moog and Roland) are combined with other assorted instruments (organ, shehnai, electric guitar and bass,) and emulsified through various time-and-space-bending devices. There are no percussions, with one surprisingly groovy exception, in which a drum machine is being generously treated with phaser and envelope filters – think of early Cabaret Voltaire with a North Saharan touch.

Papiro's handcrafted artificial vocals are anything but human, but all the more compelling: out of the fluorescent Plankton of the side-long opening track "Rhenus Rebus" rises a siren's voice, reminiscent of Alide Maria Salvetta in Battiato's "Campane", joined in a final mantra by an oboe borrowed from an inebriated Third Ear Band. Entering a chimeric karaoke bar, the title track "Automare" makes the album even more bizarre by introducing a distinctive pop feel. Back to the abstract world, the following "Polmonella" – a live recording with additional musicians Anthony Glass (aka Antenna Tony Monorail) and Markus Stähli (of Roy & the Devil's Motorcycle) – is a fevery exploration of cosmic territories in the manner of Harmonia, while the alien articulation of "Incom" sounds unlike anything else ever recorded.

His album 'Electric Lines' is out now with the 3rd single 'Home' (which features vocals of Michigan singer Daniel Wilson), showing his love of disco and perfect for the summer festivals. Indeed you can catch him live on the Park Stage at Glastonbury on Saturday night and more festivals over the coming few months. He had this to say about his mix;
'The heatwave in London made me want to play some more bashy and uptempo music than I normally play- I put together a mix of old and new garage, reggae, techno and jungle that reminds me of pirate radio and summer in the city.  It ends with one of my favourite ever reggae tunes and has my favourite old garage producers Wookie and sticky alongside new star Champion. '

The first single from Bonobo’s 'Black Sands' album is the haunting, beautiful “The Keeper”. Featuring the incomparable vocal talents of Andreya Triana, the video for the single is already a hit on YouTube, now the audio is being released in all its full-res magnificence.

Coming on like a cross between early Massive Attack and classic soul-jazz, “The Keeper” is the sound of an artist completely in control of his resources, an artist with the confidence to do a little brilliantly. He coaxes a fantastic, characterful performance from Triana and makes music which is both melancholy and effortlessly uplifting. Remixes come Redeyes, he offers the neatest d&b re-working of the original, and labelmates Grasscut, who strip things back to faintly sinister musicbox atmospherics.

Since “Days To Come” was released in 2006, Simon Green aka Bonobo has become the most listened to artist on Ninja Tune worldwide. He has moved from selling out the Luminaire to selling out Koko to selling out Kentish Town Forum and producing the live DVD to prove it. Triana, who has previously worked with Mr Scruff, Flying Lotus and Theo Parrish, found a soulmate in Green. She is now Ninja’s latest signing and her debut album has been produced by Bonobo. In between working on that project, Simon is putting the finishing touches to his own album. He has been to Barcelona to record horns, San Franscisco to get the right drums. Now he is adding the final touches in his studio in Hackney. The anticipation will build from here.
