Here's how it all began..
In the October of 2002, composer and guitarist Craig Fortnam found himself walking through the City of London with a sackful of tunes slung over his shoulder; tied to a stick (Dick Whittington style). Now, as all music comes from the air, the sack was all that stopped Craig's tunes from escaping and following the Thames out to sea. Needing a substance with the weight of history behind it, Craig bent down and began to scoop up handfuls of London clay, folding and kneeding it into the melodies and chords from his sack. As this was such hard work, he got his wife, Sharron, to help. As she folded and kneeded, she began to sing, so her beautiful voice found it's way into the expanding mixture.
When the music was almost ready, Craig called together twenty musicians and singers from all over the Great Metropolis and they all ducked into St. Martin's-within-Ludgate where the North Sea Radio Orchestra was born. As the clay music was still wet, and therefore somewhat fragile, NSRO only performed in the City of London for the first while. So, their growing audience had to travel to the strange and magical streets of old Londinium to hear the beautiful sounds.
Eventually NSRO ventured forth into the wider world where they have attracted many glowing reviews for their live and recorded performances.
They like to play in churches like St Olaves Hart St or St Giles in the Fields. They enjoy the resonant acoustics and the lack of amplification. Art galleries suit them fine too, like the Fishmarket in Northampton or Whitechapel Art Gallery in East London. They like to play at around five o' clock at festivals like The Green Man, Frome Festival or the City of London Festival. They enjoy performing in rock venues and opera houses with amplification or classical stages like the Purcell Room. Likewise they are not adverse to performing live for BBC6 Music or Radio2. If you ask them they'll probably play just for you. 
They have released four albums for your pleasure and are already working on a fifth.

What a team.

Dark Star were an English rock band from London whose music mixed dark psychedelica with a dub undertow and noisy effects-laden guitar. 

Christian "Bic" Hayes, Laurence O'Keefe and David Francolini, all former members of Levitation, formed Dark Star in 1998 and signed to the now defunct Harvest Records, the progressive rock subsidiary of EMI. 

Dark Star released several EPs and a debut album Twenty Twenty Sound, produced by Steve Lillywhite. Their explosive live performances, usually with a stage decorated with fairy lights, attracted a dedicated following. The band's common musical influence was Public Image Limited. In 2000, the band had two top 40 singles with re-releases of "Graceadelica" and "I Am The Sun", both from their debut album.

Following the touring and promotion of Twenty Twenty Sound, the band entered the studio to record the follow up. Strangers And Madmen was mooted as the lead off single and received its first play on The Evening Session, hosted by Steve Lamacq. Due to a change in personnel at EMI and a general lack of interest from the label in the new material, it was agreed the two parties would part. 

The band split in 2001 with no official announcement, to pursue different projects. They were unable to release the already recorded second album as the rights to the music belonged to EMI. A recording of pre-master mixes of this album is what you can listen to here, entitled Zurich – the title 'Zurich' came from a sketch in Dadaist comedy show 'Big Train' of which the band were huge fans. It was Laurence's job to make sure that the latest episode was always ready for viewing on the tour van VHS. Apparently the sketch comprised a tense office meeting, a deadline to be met, a graph paper bikini and, of course the word 'Zurich' was involved.

Stars In Battledress is a British duo. Brothers Richard and James Larcombe write and perform delicate, otherworldly songs for harmony voices, piano and electric guitar. They've performed and recorded together and individually with William D Drake and the North Sea Radio Orchestra, but they began creating music together in childhood, ploughing an isolated furrow with hundreds of private cassette recordings. Initially they created collages from classical, folk and film and television music, crudely re-edited, reversed or slowed down, then learnt to perform and re-record the results, adding vocals and removing recognisable elements of the sources. In their twenties they rediscovered these "songs" and began to write new material in the style of what they heard. "In Droplet Form" is the second collection of this material.

The music of Stars In Battledress is uniquely English but never whimsical, poetic but never pretentious, defiantly unusual but never contrived, complex but never flash, trippy and dreamlike but with hardly a whiff of the sixties. Contradictions all, but in their precise, delicate music everything is where it should be. There are hints of Erik Satie, Syd Barrett, The Incredible String Band, Cardiacs and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, but their style is truly theirs alone. There's something lonely and distant about it, but there's warmth and charm in their fragile world, and a gentle humour in the lyrics.

Despite the small forces this is a very varied album. "Hollywood Says So" is a lively acoustic stompalong, and "Hunt The Button" piles layers of hurdy-gurdy and tape hiss into a haunting farewell to cassette. The Larcombes even "rock" on TKS2, with unison voices hovering over a blaze of looped distortion which evokes something of their surprising forcefulness as a live act. From the fluttery delay and stretched vowels of "A Winning Decree" to the ghostly chimes of "The Women From The Ministry", the album gives off the musty air of a cobwebbed music room, and listening to it is like pressing a puzzled ear to the wall.
