BIG DATA is the paranoid pop brainchild of producer, Alan Wilkis. His music explores the relationship between man and machine, and the ways in which technology is reshaping the human experience, all with a healthy dose of distrust.

In 2014, BD made waves with the #1 alternative hit, “Dangerous (feat. Joywave),” which has since been certified Gold in the US and Canada, and with nearly 40M streams. Big Data’s 2015 debut album, 2.0, featured collaborations with Kimbra, Rivers Cuomo, Twin Shadow, and Jamie Lidell.

3.0 is the long-awaited upgrade from Big Data. In creating 3.0, Wilkis became obsessed with the subject of artificial intelligence and its many possible applications in our not-too-distant future. While AI may become humanity’s greatest achievement, it carries with it a potential risk that is both existential and irreversible… one of many reasons why experts refer to AI as our “final invention.” This tension is both fascinating and terrifying all at once, and it is the chief inspiration behind Big Data’s latest effort.

I have been writing, performing (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, and percussion/drums) and recording my own music since the early 1980s, just prior to studying Painting at Emily Carr. In 2011, I graduated from the advanced music production program at Nimbus School of Recording Arts, and was invited back as a guest artist to do some final tracking on "A Secret Underground", a body of music and art that I started working on in Japan in 2004. I began releasing fragments of it on Facebook and Soundcloud in 2011, and am in the final stages of an official, fully mastered release. An earlier C.D., "Echo Off a Cloud", is available on iTunes.

I have recently become an avid iOS musician, and believe that the platform has tremendous potential for creating very high quality music in places and environments heretofore unexplored.

So what started off has a side project, has now turned into to the full blown idea. Alan & Verity started playing together in the mid 90's., mainly writing on an acoustic guitar and playing local folk clubs and acoustic open mic nights. Now 15+ years later the acoustic guitar remains, but everything else has changed. The sound has developed into a rich, deep, layered affair, but, still somehow holding onto their early folk roots. Verity's voice, all tho always passionate and moving, has also matured into, probably, one of the best undiscovered vocalists on the modern scene.
Get deep with their beats, Get moved by their tunes, Get very surprised how much sound these two make, but most of all enjoy some truly talented songs written and performed by EMILYNEEDS.
