On the back of her highly acclaimed “Diagonal” EP at the start of summer, Anja Schneider returns with this stunning two track EP. Direct from the Riverside Studios complex in Berlin, “Hey” and “Rio” are two differing tracks which stay true to her distinct sound. “Hey” was written as she prepared for the mobilee rooftop summer parties in Barcelona this year, aiming to keep things fresh and have her own tracks for exclusive use at the parties. As a tribute to Chicago legend Ron Hardy, “Hey” pulsates with energy and is aimed heavily at the dance floor. “For me the track has to leave you with a big smile and an open heart”, she says. “Rio” on the other hand – the more melodic of the two – is a track Anja Schneider cites as being her most emotional to date. It was inspired by the good times she’s spent in Ibiza with family and friends this summer, and was written with the island’s unique sunsets in mind.

Presentation and biography:

Bot’Ox is a duo formed in 2005 by Frenchmen Julien Briffaz and Cosmo Vitelli. After a road trip to Babylon («Babylon by Car», their first album released in 2010), they come back to haunt dark clubs with a second album, «Sans Dormir», to be released November 6, 2013. The album consists of ten tracks, mostly sung, some of which have already been released in the form of singles and remixes with videos during the year.

For the second album, the battered Cadillac comes to a stop in the parking lot of a deserted nightclub as suggested by the visuals presented with the project, abandoned French clubs as photographed by Phillipe Lebruman. In the same way as cars, far from being a futuristic symbol of progress and speed, can give a foretaste of the junkyard, the night club, a symbol of youth and vitality, contains in its promise of sleepless nights the inevitable ensuing fatigue.

This decor is the ambiguous setting for songs that speak of love as any pop album does. In «Sans Dormir» however, insomnia is a solitary adventure. Opening with a spectral visit from downstairs - «Basement Love» - the album continues with «Grands Boulevards,» an instinctive nocturnal trip where rockabilly guitars rub elbows with moogs while giving an account of obsessions, recurring dreams and waking nightmares. «2.4.1» speaks of disillusionment in love while leaning towards soft rock. «Another Form of Fatigue» tries to tame the migraine with a dubby feel. «Back from the Suburbs» is a twisted electro-rock ballad. «Goodbye Fantasy» is an anti-declaration of love with pro-British pop accents. «The Face of Another» is a kind of dissatisfied, sexually wandering discopop while «Night Stuntman» is a psychedelic credit roll for a movie with no happy ending. The sweet «Unfinished Business» makes an attempt at reconciliation, before the synthesizers all emerge for the title track «Sans Dormir.»

In the cold but heartfelt voices of the artists are a meeting of male and female intimacy, which sometimes reply to each other («Unfinished Business»). These voices include Mark Kerr, Anna Jean and Judy Nylon (of the legendary punk band Snatch), already present on the first album. They are joined here by Samy Osta and Foremost Poets, the iconic trans-Atlantic voice of underground house / techno. The «deluxe» version of the album adds to these ten titles a series of tracks that were unreleased or previously only available in digital format.

The two members of Bot’Ox are prominent figures of electronic music “made in France.”
Julien Briffaz was for a long time part of the house and techno duo Tekel, also written [T]ékël. All brawn on the dancefloor and full of humor in the titles («Deep Turtle» or «Acid Bonanga» are part of their anthology tracks), the two mutts each took a different canine road in 2009 after a slew of singles and an album published in 2006 with Initial Cuts. Since then, you are most likely to find Julien Briffaz in the studio.

Cosmo Vitelli earned his reputation as a producer during the early French Touch years, remixing or being remixed by De Crecy, Cassius and Daft Punk. He also during this time produced a wealth of personal works which lead to the release of the album «Clean» in 2003. In 2004, he founded the label «I’m a Cliché» to whom we owe the debut success of Simian Mobile Disco, Azari & III and Yuksek. His consuming passion for music gradually balances out, spread among three roles: DJing, running his label, and being one-half of Bot’Ox.

Cosmo Vitelli and Julien Briffaz came together by indulging their common obsessions: an aesthetic mecha- nical universe, marked by the mythology of the automobile and the paradoxical fragility of its bodywork, and a fanatical mutating vision of music.
After a few EPs appeared on prestigious labels such as DFA and DC Recordings and Marketing, their pre- mier album «Babylon by Car» was released in 2010 by I’m a Cliché. This highway, made up of eleven tracks, alternates car chases, anxiety-filled passage through customs and forest walks at dusk. There, the sensual and melancholic voices of Anna Jean, Mark Kerr and Judy Nylon resonate.

Oscillating between the deserted road and the sweaty dancefloor, the Bot’Ox playground extended to the big screen as the duo composed the soundtrack of the film Mineurs 27 directed by the Frenchman Tristan Aurouet (2011). We find excerpts of this soundtrack on the bonus CD of «Sans Dormir» – along with titles for the film Dias de Gracia from Mexican director Everardo Gout (2012).

Get Up Recordings is back with another New York-meets-London collaboration from Hannah Holland (label owner of Batty Bass, Native City). Hannah Holland is a product of all the best bits of London club culture. She condenses the most innovative and exciting parties, scenes, movements, subcultures, and music into one frenetic curly haired whirlwind of a DJ. The Live It EP is a double A-side release that features vocals from club legends and remixers who are on the forefront of the underground club scene, from both sides of the pond. First up is “Live It”. The original is inspired by the New York Ballroom House genre, taking cues from NYC club kids like its featured vocalist, Xander. With a dark, cutting bass line, equally cutting percussion, and vocals that reference the city nightlife, the track easily lends itself to the underground dance floor. Label owners Christy Love and W. Jeremy re-work the title track under their moniker House of Stank. Their remix is the housiest interpretation on the package with its bright, uplifting keys, swinging percussion, and thumping bass. Fellow New Yorkers, The Carry Nation also take a cue from the NY Ballroom genre for their remix, infusing it with their signature style of tribal beats, stabbing bass hits, and vocal FX samples. The second original track on the release, “Play With the Maid,” is a dark and edgy house track filled with bitch-house style vocals provided by British DJ and producer Josh Caffe who makes reference to The Shed, an infamous after-hours spot tucked away deep in East London. Rounding out the EP is a remix of “Play With the Maid” from London’s The Cucarachas (Tom Stephan and Borja Peña). They give the track a super old school house vibe complete with chord stabs, driving four-on-the-floor beats, and a grooving bass line that kills. This release is a prerequisite for all after-hours heads. &#13;

Unintentionally collecting these tracks for the last ten years this project sees the sheer passion leak into unmarked territory, there were never any boundaries with time, or limits to sound, leaving an incessant freedom for the Roland affiliate to delve deeper with experimental explorations, and approach numerous styles.

It is to no surprise that the nine track album has already received enormous support from fellow French pioneer, Laurent Garnier on his ‘It is What It Is’ radio show, an immediate stamp of approval from a highly respected peer, only expected to increase over the coming period as the world receives Kah’s latest statement.

Each of the outings on the album attract you in with a soft whispering female voice, setting the tone for the next chapter, with opening track ‘Enlightenment’ igniting with the words “The Beginning”, and so it begins. Steering clear of the generic four to the floor, the thudding broken drums, flashing vocal, and pensive synth work make this an eclectic inception to the body of work and Christopher Kah’s universe. ‘History’ follows up with a gradual and steady lift through organic drumwork, a somewhat eerie and dark mood that grips you. Shuffling movements in ‘Paternity’ lean this toward a trip hop entity, conjoined with melodic synths which bring an engrossing angle. ‘Glorious Sun’ is 3 minutes of distinctive ambience, as the female chants drag you out of the rain, transcending you in the next soundscape. A sense of panic in urgency in ‘Run Run After’ creating imagery of an intense chase, a nod towards the hay days of Drum & Bass, an expected, thrashing number adding to the bizarre curation.

Another discerning journey lowering the heart rate in ‘Disturbancy - Initiate’ a chugging sci-fi trip leading you into murky waters or mystery. Psychedelic and peculiar spoken words work their way around the body of the track in ‘Damaged’, the voices embedding firmly in your mind enforcing a loss of your surroundings. The aptly named ‘Mirage’ tantalises your thought process, launching you deeper into this out earth excursion to the point of no return. Encapsulating the rollercoaster of emotion your body has encountered in one track, allowing the escapism to intensify, painting the last strokes on the canvas, building mellowly to a graceful ending of the visual experience. An unimaginable force that has cut deeper than the skin.

Bonus track ‘14 Ans’ lifts spirits with probably the most funk orientated arrangement out of the nine, a pleasant experience allowing time to stop and reflect on the experience that laid before you.

Kah’s recent endeavours do not halt here, as he recently propelled his ECHO LIVE project into the music cosmos, a collaboration with veterans of the game, Roland. The live moniker sees Christopher utilising the bare amount of two machines, a Roland MC-707 and Roland TR-8S, proving once again it is more than possible to create intelligent music with minimum resources.

There was never a doubt in anyone's mind that Kah could take us to this visually outer universe location, but now there is evidence for all to absorb and endure. A fantastic display of sound variation, bridging across contrasting moods and atmospheres, with pure emotion seeping through the gaps.

DJ Hell is known for pulling together disparate corners of the music universe, digging through history to pave a way forward, and the latest Gigolo Records release is a shining case in point: Hell revisits new wave vaudevillian (and fellow Bavarian) Klaus Nomi, now getting awoken thirty years after his tragic premature death.

But the song goes back further than that. “Cold Song” was actually written by 17th century Baroque composer Henry Purcell and poet John Dryden for their opera King Arthur. Nomi recorded a version for his self-titled album from 1981—engineered by electro pioneer Man Parrish—and it was also the last piece he performed publicly during his lifetime.

The 2013 Remake adds a totally new dimension to the original, tailored unapologetically for the dancefloor with an Italo-disco edge. Augmented by crisp, icy arpeggiation to contrast Klaus Nomi's warm, glowing voice, “Cold Song” now offers a completely different type of intensity, more kinetic than sublime. On the flip side, the DJ Hell Remix re-envisions the piece as a house track, with African polyrhythms and synthetic bleeps dancing around Nomi's sky-high countertenor. Two interpretations that differ as drastically from one another as they do from the operatic original. Watch for the forthcoming remixes from Hrdvsion and DJ QQ as well!
