Heavy Funk Jazz Mixtape 7/28/16

Clyde Stubblefield played drums for James Brown for 6 years but his legacy has lasted a lot longer than that. His rhythms have been extensively sampled and particularly his 'Funky Drummer' break helped lay the foundations of Hip Hop, and later jungle and a whole world of electronic music.

Over 2 years ago, I went to DJ in Rome & had the pleasure of visiting maestro Piero Umiliani’s Sound Workshop. It was during this time, I decided to start working on a project that would pay respect to him & all of his efforts to Jazz & Film Music. Grazie!....Piero Umiliani, is a 2LP compilation with some of our favorite tracks from the Sound Workshop archives. The compilation comes with a mix CD, created by myself. I want to thank Nature Sounds for supporting my vision, and releasing this unique approach to Piero’s music. I also want to thank my designer Mark Cruz for the art direction. Everything in this project was done from the heart. My main focus was making sure this release would age as gracefully as Piero’s music continues to daily. Where to start? Herbie Hancock is a living icon, not just in Jazz music, but also as a cultural personality. His musical cannon spans 60 years and surpasses nearly all benchmarks. In-fact, he sets the benchmarks. Delving into his discography suddenly makes one realize how incredibly versatile and prolific he is. From playing straight ahead jazz with Miles Davis in the 60’s, to constructing Headhunters (the 2nd highest selling ‘Jazz’ album of all time, after Miles’ Kind of Blue) Herbie refuses to settle into one style. The winner of more than 16 Grammys, composer of film soundtracks, collaborator with the up and coming and the trad masters; put simply Hancock is a genius. We’ve attempted to pay tribute to his astounding back catalogue by putting together a selection from our collective Hancock LPs, and even though we only touch the surface, you’ll find a fairly broad representation of his music within. There’s enough material to do another 30 of these mixes!
