A high goal: Lasting equilibrium and happiness are hard to find and seem to vanish easily. Pursuing those, the German producer and DJ Chris Wayfarer has embarked on an internal and external journey.

Rooted in drum ’n‘ bass and knowing every trick of the underground culture, Chris has recently set forth to the realms of deep house, tech house and electronica. He has created his own musical language, featuring at times a floating vibe, at times a punchy and energetic expression – always honest to himself and to the world, in a natural flow and with care to detail.

Whether in the studio or at the turntables, Chris Wayfarer fuses deep house and tech house with sampling from all kinds of electronic styles, jazz, funk and classical music to grow harmonious compositions. Alternating between groovy, funky, rough, melodic, deep and driving qualities: a musical logbook inviting you to listen, to dance and to be happy.

What musician in his right mind would name himself after two vegetables? Maybe the sort of artist who has not only decided to make them his chief source of nourishment but also subscribes to the metaphor of a tasty yet at times contrasting potpourri, a heady mix in which seriousness is often overpowered by a sense of humour verging on the absurd. Lateral and forward-thinking, always searching for new approaches, yet with a latent tendency to pedantry – this generates a degree of tension that invests experiences, situations, insights and feelings with a unique musical language which comes across as natural and authentic, occasionally mannered and elaborate but often highly direct and blunt. 

Having gained a solid amount of theoretical and hands-on experience in music, Mr. Lettuce started producing his own tunes back in 2000 – some drum ’n’ bass creations influenced by electronic sounds and spiced up with a pinch of hip-hop. Since 2002 he has been serving his compositions as a DJ at the turntables, starting out as part of the sound kitchen MJM, which he co-founded but later abandoned.  His musical journey continued with an array of projects: for instance, DJ G-I-S chopped Mr. Lettuce’s tune “The Lost Paradise”, freshly seasoned and released it on his own label Intransigent Recordings. Moreover, Mr. Lettuce is constantly exporting fresh and crispy beats to Corinthian Recordings from Atlanta, Georgia, who offer them for sale as digital downloads on several global market places. As testament to his skills, Mr. Lettuce was warmly welcomed to dish up his breaks and basslines on numerous first-class occasions, such as Europe’s biggest Black Music Festival “Splash!” as well as in the Baltic metropolis of Riga (Latvia).

Welcher Musiker trägt denn bitte die Bezeichnung eines Gemüses? Jemand, dessen Gehirnwindungen sich nicht nur für die bevorzugte Aufnahme pflanzlicher Nahrung entschieden haben, sondern im übertragenen Sinne auch ein buntes und teils widersprüchliches Durcheinander generieren: Ernsthaftigkeit duelliert sich mit bis an Sinnlosigkeit grenzendem Humor; Quer- und Weiterdenken sowie die ständige Suche nach Neuem sehen sich mit einem latenten Hang zur Pedanterie konfrontiert. Genug Spannungspotenzial, um Erlebnisse, Situationen, Erkenntnisse und Gefühle in eine eigene musikalische Sprache zu kleiden, die auf ihre Weise natürlich und authentisch, bisweilen detailverliebt, manchmal aber auch sehr direkt und undiplomatisch herüberkommt:

Theoretisch und praktisch in Musik vorgebildet, von elektronischen Klängen und einer Prise HipHop beeinflusst, hat Mr. Lettuce bereits im Jahr 2000 erste Töne zu einer eigenständigen Musikproduktion der Geschmacksrichtung Drum&Bass geformt. Seit 2002 serviert er diese Kompositionen auch als DJ auf den Plattentellern, zunächst als Teil der von ihm mitbegründeten und 2008 wieder aufgegebenen Klangküche MJM, aber auch für verschiedene andere Projekte. So hat beispielsweise DJ G-I-S den Tune „The Lost Paradise“ zerhäckselt, frisch gewürzt, neu garniert und 2004 als Vinyl auf dem hauseigenen Label Intransigent Recordings herausgebracht. Außerdem exportiert Mr. Lettuce bis heute knackige Beats an Corinthian Recordings in Atlanta, von wo aus sie in bester Frische, in digitaler Form auf den Markt gelangen. Darüber hinaus durfte er auf zahlreichen Veranstaltungen, unter anderem in Riga und auf dem Splash-Festival, Breaks und Basslines auftischen.

Seine abwechslungsreichen, detailverliebten Tracks und Sets stehen für atmosphärische, intensive Melodien und Harmonien, welche nahezu das komplette Menü abdecken und Gourmets auf eine echte Geschmacksreise schicken: Im Angebot stehen nicht nur leichter und lockerer Liquid Funk als Vorspeise, sondern auch würziger, für den Hauptgang geeigneter Jump Up sowie feurige Nachspeisen, die allesamt auch mal den Drum&Bass „Mainstream“ verlassen können. Mr.Lettuce ist eben echt bio, weder geklont, noch gewachst, dafür mit Ecken, Kanten und vielleicht auch mal mit ein paar Druckstellen, einfach lecker zu hören, frisch, gesund, knackig und mit Biss - ein musikalisches Geschmackserlebnis zum Tanzen und Genießen.
