Sometimes a lost suitcase has a more interesting journey than the traveler. I remember flying domestically in Spain and my suitcase going on an extended  journey. It was only found because I remembered my flight from Madrid to Barcelona actually continued to Cairo. After a few missteps I convinced the airline to search at Cairo International and it all ended well, but only one day before I had to leave for home. This track could easily be modified if anybody wants to divert the suitcase to a different pair of countries. Just let me know and I'll send the stems.

Grundomma is myself and my brother Glenn Ward. It's been a few years since we actively made music together...but now seems like a good a time as any. We live a few 1000 kms apart across Australia so this a file swapping exercise. Bongo features Glenn on rhythm programming, synths and sampling, bass and yours truly on Piano/keys. The track features samples from the 1970s/80s cult Australian Tv show Prisoner  (released in the UK and USA as Prisoner: Cell Block H)  that ended up playing in repeat on late night Tv for decades afterwards. My brother even owns the DVD box set Thanks as always for stopping by. Grundomma salutes you : )

Sometimes the synchronicities come together so perfectly, you can’t help but laugh. I’ve been working on this song for a few weeks now; a piece inspired by a charmingly snarky friend of mine, from my favorite chat group. And on the day I planned to release it, I discover it’s also our host’s birthday. So it is with great excitement that I get to dedicate this quirkiest of songs to our dear friend Eddie Shook; the host of ‘Anything Goes’ (now broadcasting on alt-Thursdays on Mixlr (http://mixlr.com/sleepy-bass-radio/); then uploaded to Mixcloud (https://www.mixcloud.com/DJMenamenasta/)). Thank you Eddie, for 4.5 fantastic years (at least, that’s when I joined in. Haha) of great music; and for introducing me to a wonderful new circle of friends. You truly know how to put together an evocative and entertain show; and draw a kind and friendly audience as well.

Now to share some of the funnest things that have resulted from Eddie’s show over the years, starting with the title of this song… *nudges Janine gently into the spotlight*. Thanks to Eddie's generosity, my music has made an appearance pretty much every week since I discovered ‘Anything Goes’. My songs are usually nestled in between a modern day band emulating the electro sounds of the 80s or 90s, and a band authentically from the 60s or 70s (the show is very diverse, as the title suggests). Two shows ago, as my latest creation was playing, Janine made the comment ‘Your music always has this Subversive Robot Leprechaun element’, and everyone in the chat room loved the comment. After a brief discussion, we concluded… I needed to make that song. And so here it is. And thank you, Janine… for being the impetus behind this one. :)

Next wonderful story. Even before I discovered ‘Anything Goes’, Carlos was already a regular attendee in chat. When I first heard his music, I was honestly overwhelmed. My ears were not prepared for his depth and breadth of instrumental skill, and his time signatures quite simply boggled my mind. But after several shows I began to see the brilliance in the structure; and after several more, I began to ask questions. Carlos is truly generous with his knowledge, and he always takes time to explain musical concepts to me. Just listening to the show, I learned so much about music theory. Recently, Carlos generously offered to teach me some music theory basics (as well as how to actually play piano), and now a whole new phase of my life has begun… at the age of 52. And after just a few lessons, I can now play several musical scales and chords (like the Minor Pentatonic scales, as well as finally understanding that whole Circle of Fifths and Fourths thingy). So thank you, thank you, thank you, my friend. I can’t put into words how exciting this is for me.

And then of course there are all the collaborative projects that have resulted from this show (and the connections that I’ve made). I’m now at 20 collaborations/remixes; all with people I discovered (or actually met) on the show… and it’s a spectacular list: Carlos, Janine, Darren and Kelley (Keldari Station), Johanna (jOjO’Star), Stoney (Stone Catcherye), Jason (Asleep with Headphones and Lazy Dada, and also the generous provider of the Mixlr account), Michael (Think Good Audio), Frank and Kara (Honor in Treason), and Cheryl and Bevan (Vague Notion). I’m honored to have met all these talented musicians, and privileged to have worked with many of them. So… many thanks to all of you as well.

So there you go, Eddie. Thank you for everything. Happy birthday, my friend. I hope you are having a wonderful day today. And I hope this quirky little song puts a smile on your face. I look forward to chatting with you again next Thursday. :)

This is a totally stolen idea gleaned from another one of those phone conversations with my brother Gary. We talk to each other every few days and normally end up sounding like two old men sitting on a park bench putting the World to rights.

I’m sure a lot of what we say has been said many times before (what hasn’t?) but one day, out of the blue, Gal says to me “ Sometimes I find things too difficult to deal with. I would love the opportunity to step off the world for just one second and clear my head a bit...” At the time I just accepted it as the type of thing we say to each other but two days after the phone call the idea of stepping off the world to escape the pressures of daily life returned when I was playing my guitar. The words “I’m stepping off, I’m stepping off” fitted with what I was playing and the start of a new opus was born.

Once a song seems complete, I generally record a quick demo and send it off to Gal to see if it has any potential. If he thinks it has, between us we try to put a better demo together to send to Hans.  If he thinks it’s any good, he’ll work on an arrangement and more often than not sends back something back that sounds way better than what we’d imagined.  

We might chip in a few ideas here and there (as Gal did with a totally new drum arrangement on this) but Hans is definitely the one that gives it most of it’s final shape and sound.  I love every step of the songwriting process.  It provides a kind of therapy and the creative process gives every day purpose and interest.  You could say it’s my way of stepping off the world for a short moment.

Wonderful 70's Tune originally written and performed by the most talented Singer-Songwriter, John David 'JD' Souther https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._D._Souther
Souther's partnership with Linda Ronstadt led to her beautiful version of this Original song being featured as the third track on her Grammy Award Winning Classic album, 'Heart Like A Wheel' - released in 1974. The song has been covered by others, but the Ronstadt version is the Gold Standard and more than survives 'The Test of Time', even today!

Tough one here.  In recent years, I have lost many family members and so many friend.  The deepest cut was the lost of my beautiful 31 year old daughter a few years ago this month.  As members of this human race we all share in these emotions and feelings.  Many, many good days, some sad.  SO IS LIFE

Classic sparkly gem from 1969, originally written and performed by the most incredible and underrated, Joe South, on his album of same name. Later, covered by the infamous Brook Benton, as well as Bobby Bare, Glen Campbell and others. Always loved this nostalgic, Retro 60'sh tune. Friday is movie day for the wife and I.  Recently we saw the movie (12 Strong) about the first American soldiers to fight back after 911.  As the credits rolled at the end, this song played and has stuck with me.  Recorded  by Zac Brown and trio, Sir Rosevelt.  Love this song and tried a little version.  Thanks for the listen

Retired musician .  Just writing a few simple songs about
