This piece was inspired by a 'broken' CD player, which generated random noise and a few sporadic electric hums. The composer regards this machine as a unique and unpredictable instrument with a loop sound. Additionally, the process o f deviation from playback'stimeline, that is produced between mechanical noise andplayback music, lets the composer imagine that this machine is like an old Music Box.
The deviation from a linear progression and tension created by the non-linear movements, along with the resulting sounds and patterns. lead to aloop-like structure that departs from the regular flow of time. The title "Deviation" refers to this basic structure, which is derived from the broken CD-Player. This music consists of 5 instruments, apiano quintet(a piano and string quartet), a typicalclassical instrumental combination, along with fixed electronic sound. The composer brings this sound combination to the testhumorously with timbraland structural possibilities.
The composition is divided into seven parts, including an introduction.The sound is composed of electronic distortions and quotations from variousclassical pieces. To select the musical materials, thecomposer asked ChatGPT (OpenAI) to recommend the greatestchamber music in history,that could be a silly or complexquestion in many fields,and critically evaluated the Al's suggestions including the criteria used byvarious classical music magazines, such as Classic FM, Classicalmusiconly, and Talkclassical.
The selected fragments of music were distorted or integrated into the composition, and include works by well-known composers such as R.Schubert, E.Satie, A. Vivaldi, M.Ravel, C.Debussy, and L.V.Beethoven. The quoted pieces also include rock music fromt h e90s band "Nirvana' and classicalcrossover music performed byAndrea Bocelli.
To apply this diverse popularmusic beyond genre reflects the concerns of the composer regarding the tension between universalized and individualized society that could arise in the age ofrapid technological advancement and information gathering.
