With their self-produced new album ‘Defender’, Brighton’s Chungking are back to demonstrate all the elements that have made them a connoisseurs’ favourite. Slick and sultry grooves, coupled with serious musicianship. Incredibly affecting lyrics – some abstract and out there, some so direct they’re like arrows into your heart. 

Proper, deep-rooted songwriting that places them somewhere in a miraculous zone between Kate Bush, The Bee Gees and the ‘Drive’ soundtrack, and which could only have come from people utterly in love with pop music in all its forms. And above all, the voice and multi- layered harmonies of Jessie Banks, smooth as silk and tough as steel, which has had critics reaching for superlatives like, “ANGELIC” (Time Out), “PERFECT” (Music Week), “A-GRADE” (Mixmag), “REMARKABLE AND DROP DEAD GORGEOUS” (Mojo) and “BRITAIN’S FINEST FEMALE SINGER” (Sunday Times).

The band’s core of Banks, Sean Hennessy and Ben Townsend are building on a career spent sneaking into people’s affections with songs that subtly weave themselves into listeners’ lives. They’ve collaborated with pop overlord Richard X and WARP records’ techno-soulman Jamie Lidell, while Jessie by special request provided vocals both for tracks and live shows by Royksopp and the beautiful single ‘Cherry Blossom Girl’ by Air. 

They also provided the soundtrack to the climactic final scenes of dark US TV drama ‘Nip/Tuck’, and contributions to the soundtracks of ‘Ugly Betty’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.

Chungking’s sound is more consistent and timeless than ever – able to take in everything from The Carpenters to Vashti Bunyan, psychedelic soul to Italo- disco, John Martyn to John Travolta, but still always completely and unmistakably Chungking to the core.
