Working in Lisbon electronic music's most modern and enticing fringes since 2006, Maria Amor's has an active role in her hometown as a careful selector, DJ, vocalist and producer in genres like dubstep, club, uk funky, uk garage, hip hop and beyond. Maria started playing in bands as a teenager and later shifted her to focus to electronic music through her work with A.M.O.R., with Ervadoce (alongside Shcuro - with whom she also runs the label Paraíso) and later with Chicago's own Chrissy. Her first solo EP, with the fittingly poetic title 'Her Roses Dance Louder Than Tears' was released on naivety and in it, bold, future-facing production goes hand in hand with melodic incantations - experimentation peeks at every corner, and even her own vocals flourish in both textural and lyrical ways. Maria's myriad influences timelessly transpire in her current practice which nevertheless remains highly personal, having the dance floor as the main habitat without ever leaving emotionality behind.

@sisterzo is a DJ, producer, and writer, newly based in Colombus, Ohio after establishing herself in the music scene of Kansas City, Missouri. She is a co-founder of @untuckcollective, a queer/trans/femme/nonbinary collective based in Kansas City. Her mix is unadulterated summer fun full of bouncy basslines and cheeky vocals - she described it best herself: "It’s giving sweat, sunsets, poppers and good clean ecstasy."

"When I started to conceive of this mix, I had a very strong feeling—as I’m sure many of us did around this time (May-June)—of desperately wanting to return to the light of a good, cathartic club night.

The Pandemic had shifted my musical tastes away from house, techno, bass music etc. and sent me down this rabbit hole of slower (and faster) tempos and rhythms. This mix was sort of a self-directed return to upbeat, driving house and techno—a spell for manifesting eventual joy and collective movement on the dancefloor, or a field somewhere. It’s giving sweat, sunsets, poppers and good clean ecstasy. I recorded the mix at home on CDJ 2000s and a DJM900."

This month’s guest is Berlin based producer and DJ Joseph Richmond-Seaton, also known as @Call-Super.  

Perhaps best known for his incredible, often surreal, abstract, and psychedelic compositions like 2014’s breakthrough Suzi Ecto and 2017’s Arpo, Call Super’s love of music runs deep. He’s a dedicated producer, starting every day in the studio and working away the hours, whether he feels inspired or not. Music is one of the only pursuits, alongside drawing and painting, that allows him to reach a state of total presence — something he considers essential for happiness. In this conversation, we look back on Joe’s childhood, the escapism he’s found in music and art, and the nature of staying present.

Meticulous in the studio as well as behind the decks, Joe holds some of the most distinguished releases of the past decade. From the seminal ‘Claptrap’ on Hessle Audio, ‘MB / Studio Power On’ on Hemlock, or his most recent ‘Get Centred’ EP on Cómeme, his productions are a style-fusing, intricate, genre melting pot, which have have been a constant and refreshing injection into the UK club scene. Staying true to form, Joe plays with the listeners expectations as he expertly weaves through 60 minutes of body movers.

New York-based DJ dreemseed pays homage to her recent stay in the UK. 

dreemseed grew up in Florida and made her way to Brooklyn over 10 years ago, becoming a staple in the city’s close-knit community. A co-curator of the brilliant down2earth mix series, we first discovered dreemseed through online mixes via some of our favourite platforms such as pipipi and The Lot Radio. With regular gigs at Nowadays, Bossa Nova Civic Club and Elsewhere, playing at nights such as pi2pi, SLINK and Incienso label showcases, dreemseed is a go-to for ethereal, trippy sets to lose yourself to whether it’s deep, introspective warm ups or hands-in-the-air bass excursions for those peak-time moments. 

Speaking about this mix, dreemseed says, "as the series is based in the UK and I had been based in the UK for roughly half the year, I thought I would let the mix be informed by the soundscape I've been coming into contact with over there. I've been in a darker mood, not like evil-wise, but just a bit more introspective and secretive. I think this is reflective of that state of mind."

Ajam Media Collective's Mixtape series is back with a special guest mix from @Baxtak of Outtallectuals. Be sure to tune in and read the accompanying interview.

"This mix came to fruition as an attempt to use the Ajam platform to show artists who are critically and uniquely engaging with music that is often cordoned off into the “world music” sphere. Instead, Outtallectuals takes these sounds as influences to deeply connect with, rather than cliches to reproduce and slightly modify. To bring more context to this project, I had a chance to ask Baxtak, about the label’s past, present, and future.

Ajam: You often present music on Outtallectuals that would perhaps be classified as “world” or “ethnic” music in more conventional formats. How do you navigate the often sticky connotations that comes with presenting this type of music?

Baxtak: I suppose we try to find ‘world’ fusion music that has something to offer beyond just using ethnic sounds. There’s a very fine line between sounding fantastic and coming across cheesy. For this reason, we do our best to promote ‘ethnofusion’ music that blends the organic elements of world music and most up to date electronic production skills. ‘Ethnic’ elements are gateways to our ancient roots and they are best utilized when giving growth to new branches and leaves, while the electronic elements represent technological advancement. The plant metaphor works perfectly to explain this; the deeper the roots, the stronger the foundation, and the higher the plant will go, opening new and lasting horizons. We basically try to be the Sequoias, rather than the weeds."
