Retro-futuristic but undeniably human, Circuit3 is the alias of Irish electronic artist and songwriter Peter Fitzpatrick. Using analogue synthesizers as a vehicle for lyrical storytelling, this music is heavily influenced by the classic era of electronic pop.

A childhood fascination with space provides the emotional narrative arc for 'Technology For The Youth', a collection of crisp electronic pop songs and atmospheric instrumentals created with an enviable array of analogue synthesizers. It focuses squarely on that period before digital synthesis, just as the lyrics are informed by those endeavours in space exploration pre-dating the first Space Shuttle left Cape Canaveral.

Circuit3 debuted with the 'siliconchipsuperstar' LP (2018), followed by the album 'The Price Of Nothing & The Value Of Everything' (2019), praised by no less than Martyn Ware (The Human League, Heaven17). More recently, Circuit3 also released a remix created of Rodney Cromwell 'Opus Three'.

For Fitzpatrick, this was the album he always hoped he would make and one that he has poured his entire heart and soul into. 'Technology For The Youth' is electronic pop constructed from the brave ambitions of forward-thinking scientists and politicians, and the remembered hopes, dreams and fascinations of a young Dublin boy.

In the past seven years, Fleisch has become synonymous with raw body music, since its infamous debut with the release of Schwefelgelb's 'Wie Die Finger Durch Den Nebel. Born from a collective in 2014, the label has evolved throughout the years, without losing its very peculiar identity born from friendship and the imprint of like-minded individuals.

Discover this and a lot more in this interview with Alison Lewis aka Zanias, one of the two original founders of the label. She also put together an eclectic mix for us, where she played just tracks released on Fleisch for a real deep dive into the aesthetics and unique identity of the label.

Dublin electronic artist Circuit3 has signed with Manchester's AnalogueTrash label for the new album 'Technology For The Youth', ahead of which comes the upbeat lead single 'Future Radio', co-produced by Wolfgang Flür (Kraftwerk) collaborator iEuropean (Sean Barron) and mastered at WAV Mastering by Richard Dowling, known for his work with Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Motorhead, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, New Order and Sparks.

"Every Circuit3 album features a track co-written with Brian McCloskey, better known to many as the curator of the magnificent Smash Hits magazine archive 'Like Punk Never Happened'. From California, he sent me lyrics for 'Future Radio', which captured my childhood love of pirate radio stations popped into a blender with the space race.  Starting out as an homage to The Buggles, it becomes a boy's adventure tale, drifting off to sleep to the sound of pirate radio signals ebbing and flowing into my dreams," says Peter Fitzpatrick.

Following the success of double A-side single, Holy Rivers / Incubation Song, which has racked up over 150,000 streams on Spotify since its October release and was praised by Clash Music for its “shimmering synths, glacial electronics, and heartrending vocals”, London Synthpop group Empathy Test returns with a second, tantalising taste of their upcoming third album, in the form of new single Empty-handed.

Empty-handed presents another sonic leap forward for a band that has never been one to tread water when it comes to their sound, presenting a harder, darker style whilst simultaneously tipping their proverbial hat to the Synthwave scene that helped launch their career back in 2014. An arpeggiated synthesiser provides a relentless momentum from the get-go, while the deceptively simple composition gradually builds to its epic conclusion.

Opening line, “My heart is an empty vessel / Drifting out to sea” sets the tone both lyrically and emotionally. It’s about being unable to give a partner the emotional support or commitment they need and the feeling of emptiness that comes with that. As always, Empathy Test delivers a perfect marriage of music and emotion, the sudden flourishes of strings and synthesisers rushing past like spirits in the night. 

There’s a sense of urgency here that has not been present previously, as well as an innate confidence that suggests the third album, which comes after the simultaneous release of two debut albums Losing Touch (Remastered) and Safe From Harm in November 2017 and is slated for release in early September, might just be the band’s most accomplished to date.

Empathy Test is childhood friends Isaac Howlett (vocals and songwriting) and Adam Relf (production and composition). They perform live with the help of Christina Lopez (live drums) and Samuel Winter-Quick (live keyboards). This June, they tour the UK with Canadian Post Punk band Actors and in September, North America, with Industrial Pop act Aesthetic Perfection. They will also be appearing at selected festivals in Europe. 

Empty-handed will be self-released in digital and CD formats on 20th June 2019, with b-side A River Loves a Stone and remixes by ex-Black City Lights producer TRAAPS and LA artist and producer Ari Mason, plus the band’s customary 7” vinyl picture disc format, all of which can be pre-ordered right now from Empathy Test’s Bandcamp.
