For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

Moonstruck

One evening, when I came home from a troubled day at work, I found my neighbor transformed into Franz Kafka. He sat unter the staircase, and if I bowed down my head a little I could see his brown, old-fashioned suit, slightly creased and divided by arches into stiff sections. His legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked. «What’s happened to him?» I thought. It wasn’t a dream.
We went for a walk on that rainy day and talked about solitude and bundt-cakes.

Project #3 - Quiet City

My apartment is in front of a small river/lake, and every summer there has been a cute couple of swans. Actually swans are monogamic, once they have chosen a partner they stay together their entire life. 

I was expecting them back this spring ... but only one of them was coming. I have seen him at all the places they always shared together, and he always seemed to look for her. But she was not coming, and I don't know what happened to her. It was so sad! 

This swan belongs to the family of "Mute Swans" (Cygnus Olor). They are completely silent during their lifetime until the moment just before death, when the swan sings one beautiful song.

In autumn the other swans prepared for their anual flight to warmer regions, but the sad swan was not with them, and hence I wondered was happened to him. 

One night in late golden october, one of those few where the summer rears up a last time, I woke up by a strange sound. I went to my balcony, the lake in silver moonlight in front of me ... with the swan in the middle. 

And than I heard it ... the most beautiful and saddest melody in the world. Obviously the swan was singing the story of his life, and it was full of melancholy, so much about missing her and the moments they shared together as a loving couple. 

This was the last time I had seen the swan. When I went back in the room I immediately tried to note down the melody I had heard, and I need to excuse that due to my inconsiderable musical abilities this song here is only a cheap imitation ... but I hope you can get at least a glance.

The Monogamic Swan

"Rain Has Fallen All The Day" is a marvelous poem by James Joyce. 
Some time ago http://soundcloud.com/mementoaeterna and I had the idea to create a song from it ... and it was a wonderful journey: first we shared our impressions about the various meanings, atmosphere and interpretations of this poem. She is so sensitive, and she has the gift of noticing the extraordinary where others just see the ordinary ... it has been pure pleasure! Once we had an idea of the situation and all layers of meaning the music came out of nowhere. We haven't been in a hurry, hence we allowed ourself more sweet anticipation by simply not finalizing the last percent of work ... but NOW I am incredibly proud to present our collab :-)
