A Berghain residents since its opening in 2004, Len Faki is one of European techno's best loved and most in-demand artists, his pumping sets normally utilising three CDJs and a Yamaha RM1x unit to showcase his long honed skills as a DJ.

Also a long-standing producer with a discography stretching back to 1999, he currently has three labels to his name, Figure, Podium and Figure, and a back catalogue of punishing classics such as 'Death by House' and personal re-edits like his killer version of DJ Hyperactive's 'Wide Open'.

With three gigs coming up across the next three months in England and Scotland, Faki dropped us this mix to give a flavour of his current tastes – tribal drums, stomping kicks and trippy atmospherics booked ended by bright, melodic flourishes.

By now Dutch label Shipwrec has well and truly established itself as a go-to outlet for excellent modern electro. As such, it makes perfect sense that their next release – a special one-sided pressing - is from revered electro specialist Anthony Rother. It sees the man offer up some pure dancefloor fire that is part techno, part electro, but wholly awesome. What’s more, the blank b-side of this extra boutique 180g vinyl will be silkscreen printed and will come in a special sleeve. It will be a limited run, with no represses, and is the start of a new series of such releases from Shipwrec. 
The track, entitled 'Balkonien', is a broody affair from the off, with a supple, rubbery bed of kicks down low and a molten synth line up top. As things unfold, a nebulous network of celestial pads spiral about, the drums bounce more and lots of sinewy machine lines dance about and have you doing the same. It’s an instant modern classic full of electronic soul, frankly!

Es ist mal wieder so weit. Zum ersten mal in diesem Jahr und erstmals seit Chris Liebing´s unvergesslicher Geburtstagsparty im vergangenen Dezember, kommt CLR für ein weiteres Heimspiel in den Cocoon Club / Frankfurt. Chris Liebing, der gerade auf dem Time Warp Festival in Mannheim gefeiert wurde, wird dieses mal die gesamte Nacht lang im Main Room des Clubs spielen.

Mit dabei sind ausserdem unser Spezialgast Juan Pablo Pfirter, eine wahre Techno-Ikone im heimischen Argentinien und zur Zeit einer der gefragtesten Südamerika-Importe; Tommy Four Seven und Brian Sanhaji (live), zwei Künstler die durch viele unvergessliche Gigs und ihre jeweiligen Debüt-Alben auf CLR für Aufsehen gesorgt haben; Monoloc, von dem wir in Kürze sein Debüt-Album auf CLR erwarten dürfen; DJ Emerson, der sich unter anderem durch seine umtriebige und erstklassige DJ- und Produktions-Tätigkeit einen klangvollen Namen in der heutigen Techno Szene gemacht hat, sowie Cocoon Club Resident Peter Eilmes, der uns dort schon bei den vergangenen CLR Events mit seinem eleganten Stil erfreut hat.

Viel mehr muss man zu diesem Event wohl auch gar nicht sagen, da sich die Kombination von richtungsweisendem Techno aus dem Hause CLR in einem der besten Clubs weit und breit schon mehrfach als Erfolgsrezept bewiesen hat. Was wir Euch versprechen können, ist eine weitere, denkwürdige Techno-Nacht mit einigen der aktuellen und zukünftigen Größen des Genres, ganz viel Spaß und ganz viel Bass! Top-notch DJs and producers are often known for their globe-trotting ways, but Magda takes it to another level. Born in Poland, she came of age in Detroit and was eventually adopted by Richie Hawtin and the rest of the Minus Records crew. Now living in Berlin, she's been in the news as of late after the (somewhat surprising) announcement that she was leaving Minus after more than a decade and instead focusing on Items & Things, a label she runs with Marc Houle and Troy Pierce. Although the split was amicable, it does represent the start of an important new chapter in the techno veteran's career, so we figured that now would be a good time for her to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. True to form, Magda has delivered a deep, complex mix that often features three our four tracks playing at once while she combines techno—of both the pulsing Detroit and minimal variety—with bits of house, disco, and a few other surprises. Magda's future may be wide open, but there is little doubt that her DJ abilities are still on-point.

Advent – A coming, or an arrival, a coming into being or use. 

Quite an appropriate name for Cisco Ferreira, a man who has played a big part in the creation and development of Techno from the very beginning of this genre’s history. Indeed, his Techno CV is the stuff of legend. Cisco was producing Techno and performing live Techno shows years before the rest of the world had even heard of the genre. He released his first track in 1988, was a pioneer of the Live PA (or Live Public Address – performing Techno live in front of an audience using electronic music gear), and, if all that wasn’t enough, he even worked as the sound engineer on some of Derrick May’s, Adonis & Fingers Inc’s recording sessions! 

The list goes on, and so does Cisco. Unlike other Techno pioneers from the early years, Cisco continues to produce with as much passion and frequency as he did back in the day. His releases on Labels Like Tresor, Rotation, Electrix, Kanzleramt, Dj Gigolos, Pure Plastic, Synewave plus many more is just another example of his ongoing pursuit to keep making music and pushing Techno to new boundaries. 

Cisco was born to Portuguese parents on the island of Madeira (Portugal). His family moved to London (1975) when he was five years old, setting the stage for his musical career. While at Paddington College (1986) in West London, he studied sound engineering and secured a job after graduation as an assistant sound engineer at ZOLOU Then later WALL Studios.  

At this period is when he really started to learn about Sound & Production, his 1st main recording sessions as an engineer were rock & “Inde” based bands & the studio owners being in successful rock bands. Matt Dangerfield & John Payne “ASIA” this 1st step was a start in learning about balancing & mixing down the rock way, which had a lot of intense & Raw energy especially on drums & Guitars.. 

Other bands Cisco did sessions for: P.I.L. (John Lydon - sex pistols) – Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) – That petrol emotion. Then Later Pop, Dance, Soul & reggae groups like: Wild Bunch (Nelly hopper & Massive Attack) – Marco Pirroni (Adam & the ants) - Maxi Priest – Sly Dunbar (Sly & Robbie) – Loose Ends – Cheryl Lynn… 

1987 Cisco began going to clubs and learning about this new thing called Acid House, which was spreading like crazy throughout London’s underground scene, culminating in the famous “Summer of Love” in 1988, the genre’s golden period. 

Around this time, a record label called, Jack Trax, “One of the 1st to release Acid House, House & techno in UK” moved in next door and began using the same studio for recording sessions, with Cisco as the engineer working with Fingers Inc, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson & Derrick May. Cisco released his first record in 1988 on Ferrari records (R&S records) Then later “Cisco Ferreira” EP on Fragile. 

His first big break came in 1994, when he and fellow Londonite Colin McBean (a.k.a. Mr. G) were brought on by Internal Records to help co-produce a group called Salt Tank. A record contract with Internal/FFRR soon followed, committing The Advent to 12 EP’s and 3 albums.

Today, The Advent goes on just as Cisco Ferreira. While he has had a long history with tons of accomplishments to hang his hat on, he continues to make history. The Advent is fulfilling Cisco’s vision as much as ever. He is busy touring as both a DJ and a live performer, producing for numerous labels, and running his own Techno imprint, Kombination Research. 

As Cisco moves forward, striving to fulfill the ambitious goals he has set one can look back at his storied past and see how he has come full circle… The Saga continues.
