For his new EP, ‘Undercover', Items & Things co-founder Marc Houle jumps in his time machine and heads back in time. Destination Chicago, 1987, and a face to face with Master C&J exploring the mysterious power of plunging basslines and moody synths. On remix duties Berlin based Miro Pajic sneaks in charting a decidedly bleepier course while Bruno Pronsato delivers his signature 'romantic techno' sound.

There’s no way back and Marc launches the fist bars of ‘Undercover’ with just a bouncy kick and a vintage ‘house’ bassline. With reverb in full effect the drums and hi-hats find their own space and time. Then, if the synths that roll in aren’t mysterious enough for you, the pillow talk vocals will be. The end of each line, spoken with a certain sense of agitation, is covered by chords that ride, all night long. The revelation is for your imagination but you might not want to be ‘Under Covers’ with this guy.

Next up, Miro takes the dirty sheets and chucks them in the washing machine for a good old fashioned rinse and spin. This mix creeps along all bubbles, pops, tick tocks and rim shots. Snare rolls glide in and out of time only to snap back for a sub-bass drop or a little heavy breathing. What more can you ask for?

Bruno’s ‘Electric Blanket Dub’ warms things up quite nicely with its intricate, heady take on the original. Bringing a subtle balance to the three mixes with vaguely organic tones, natural rhythms and spontaneous drum fills, Mr. Pronsato comes through in full on a cold Berlin night. 
The final track, ‘Triple E’, is an underground goodie brandishing a relentless kick and enough swing to make Chancellor Merkel do the Jitterbug. Combine sharp snares, a muted bass warble and nonsensical vocal snips panning from side to side and you have the perfect late night jack track or pump priming party starter.

True to the ‘no rules’ vision laid out by Marc, Magda and Troy, this new edition of ‘Items & Things’ is weird and wonderful with more bounce to the ounce.

Opening with the Vangelis inspired Present Voyage then weaving a path through gritty throbbing bass, exemplified by Arrival and on to minimized funk of Disco Diva and Need House, Sonic Intervention progresses naturally on through the swirling tension of Get Up and crescendos with the combination of floor-burner NZT and the old-school Electro stomping Electric Pandemic; featuring the vocals of Detroit Grand Pubas Paris Du Black Fu. When quizzed on his motivations behind his latest studio album, The Advent stated I wanted to do something quite personal for this first album and delve a little bit into the past to get inspiration from my influences to make an album that reflected all the musical genres I have been inspired by over the years electro, electronica, tech house - not just the techno tracks. Future music from a past master, made for the here and now.

WetYourSelf! Recordings parting shot for 2012 comes in the form of a four track EP from bone-fide techno innovator Marc Houle and is entitled ‘Zorba’ EP.

Having left Richie Hawtin’s M_Nus in 2011 to refocus energies on his, Magda and Troy Pierce’s Items & Things imprint, Marc Houle has continued to impress fans of forward thinking techno, most recently with his Undercover LP project. Houle’s involvement with WetYourSelf!’s weekly club night goes back years while his superb remix for APP’s ‘All I Can Think About’ on WYS! Recordings 2011 meant he was a must have for a future release.

From the plucked bass tones of opener ‘Zorba’ to the fluttering reed synths of closer ‘Oo oo’, Italo and Cosmic disco is the dominating force on this rare foray outside of the Items & Things camp, and the results are infectious.

The unstable, detuned bass of ‘I Uh You’ create a woozy, drunken funk that fans of Houle’s material will lap up while the uninitiated will no doubt be taken by it’s weirdo charm, a trope that bleeds through the entire EP but really unleashes in third track ‘Rainysnake’, a masterpiece in loose, machine music.

Overall, ‘Zorba’ is the sound of Houle playing with his influences and playing with his machines and the result is a resolutely ‘fun’, unique and sometimes bizarre EP.

Soma Records are pleased to present an extra special compilation of tracks from the last year, mixed exclusively by Gary Beck in what is his first ever commercially available mix CD. After the hugely successful 20th anniversary celebrations, Soma continued with their high quality output right through 2012, forging ahead with new and old artists alike. 2012 saw the debut album from Gary himself that immediately made its mark on the techno world, demonstrating his amazing talent as not just a techno producer but as an artist. Further albums from Deepchord who followed up his first album on Soma with the deep and uniquely expressional ‘Sommer’ that also spawned 2 separate vinyl releases. Heavy hitters Pig & Dan showed the versatility of Soma’s output also with their own 10 year anniversary album ‘Decade’ complete with fantastic remixes from Justin Berkovi, Carlo Lio & more. On the singles front, there were some particular standouts. Soma stalwarts Slam & Silicone Soul also released new material that became instant classics in the house & techno world. New signing Mark Reeve burst onto the scene with his Dice EP, Harvey McKay collaborated with Saytek on the tough as you like ‘Push EP’ and we also saw the Envoy classic, Detroit inspired techno groover, Seawall, reworked by Chilean wonder producer Ricardo Villalobos. All in all, making it a very tough decision to compile last year’s tracks into one CD! Gary’s mix is a perfect example of why he has become one of the busiest DJs around. Kicking things off with Deepchord’s perfectly dubbed out ‘Tonality Of Night”, Gary quickly picks up the pace, moving fervently through tracks from Joe Stawarz, Heiko Laux & Steve Rachmad into Claude Von Stroke’s excellent mix of Scott Grooves’ Mothership Connection. Mark Henning’s infectious “You’re Digging Into Me’ funks things up before launching head first into the peak of the mix with Pig & Dan and Mark Reeve tracks doing the damage along with Gary’s own ‘Algoreal’. Exclusive to the Soma21 compilation is the Christian Smith & Wehbba remix of the eternal Funk D’Void classic ‘Diabla’. This unforgettable track is given a very modern day rework and doesn’t fail to trigger in all the right places. As the mix begins to wind down we find Gary finishing off in epic style with the fantastic Matthias Tanzmann rework of Silicone Soul’s ‘Right On, Right On’. Closing on Ricardo Villalobos’ interpretation of Envoy’s ‘Seawall’.

<p>The label bosses The Advent and Industrialyzer team up with Hugo Paixao and they are releasing an excellent EP on Codeworks. Kicking off this EP is the title track ‘Mutant’ which creates a big chunky affair full of dark beats with smooth percussion on the foreground. A very nice and intense production with smooth string getting along. ‘Twisted’ follows, featuring stabbing and rolling deep basslines mixed up with nice and melodic riffs. Can be better than that? Three excellent producers getting along and they produce two techno anthems for Codeworks. Enjoy</p>

Advent – A coming, or an arrival, a coming into being or use. 

Quite an appropriate name for Cisco Ferreira, a man who has played a big part in the creation and development of Techno from the very beginning of this genre’s history. Indeed, his Techno CV is the stuff of legend. Cisco was producing Techno and performing live Techno shows years before the rest of the world had even heard of the genre. He released his first track in 1988, was a pioneer of the Live PA (or Live Public Address – performing Techno live in front of an audience using electronic music gear), and, if all that wasn’t enough, he even worked as the sound engineer on some of Derrick May’s, Adonis & Fingers Inc’s recording sessions! 

The list goes on, and so does Cisco. Unlike other Techno pioneers from the early years, Cisco continues to produce with as much passion and frequency as he did back in the day. His releases on Labels Like Tresor, Rotation, Electrix, Kanzleramt, Dj Gigolos, Pure Plastic, Synewave plus many more is just another example of his ongoing pursuit to keep making music and pushing Techno to new boundaries. 

Cisco was born to Portuguese parents on the island of Madeira (Portugal). His family moved to London (1975) when he was five years old, setting the stage for his musical career. While at Paddington College (1986) in West London, he studied sound engineering and secured a job after graduation as an assistant sound engineer at ZOLOU Then later WALL Studios.  

At this period is when he really started to learn about Sound & Production, his 1st main recording sessions as an engineer were rock & “Inde” based bands & the studio owners being in successful rock bands. Matt Dangerfield & John Payne “ASIA” this 1st step was a start in learning about balancing & mixing down the rock way, which had a lot of intense & Raw energy especially on drums & Guitars.. 

Other bands Cisco did sessions for: P.I.L. (John Lydon - sex pistols) – Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) – That petrol emotion. Then Later Pop, Dance, Soul & reggae groups like: Wild Bunch (Nelly hopper & Massive Attack) – Marco Pirroni (Adam & the ants) - Maxi Priest – Sly Dunbar (Sly & Robbie) – Loose Ends – Cheryl Lynn… 

1987 Cisco began going to clubs and learning about this new thing called Acid House, which was spreading like crazy throughout London’s underground scene, culminating in the famous “Summer of Love” in 1988, the genre’s golden period. 

Around this time, a record label called, Jack Trax, “One of the 1st to release Acid House, House & techno in UK” moved in next door and began using the same studio for recording sessions, with Cisco as the engineer working with Fingers Inc, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson & Derrick May. Cisco released his first record in 1988 on Ferrari records (R&S records) Then later “Cisco Ferreira” EP on Fragile. 

His first big break came in 1994, when he and fellow Londonite Colin McBean (a.k.a. Mr. G) were brought on by Internal Records to help co-produce a group called Salt Tank. A record contract with Internal/FFRR soon followed, committing The Advent to 12 EP’s and 3 albums.

Today, The Advent goes on just as Cisco Ferreira. While he has had a long history with tons of accomplishments to hang his hat on, he continues to make history. The Advent is fulfilling Cisco’s vision as much as ever. He is busy touring as both a DJ and a live performer, producing for numerous labels, and running his own Techno imprint, Kombination Research. 

As Cisco moves forward, striving to fulfill the ambitious goals he has set one can look back at his storied past and see how he has come full circle… The Saga continues.
