If there is someone who is an expert in designing the best sci-fi techno, it is the Argentinean Translate. His impeccable career spans across timeless space and time, populated with works of the highest quality and precision, whether on his own label or on labels across the known world.

This is why we feel enormously happy to have him on the label and also to be able to give it physical form with a vinyl release, as well as digital.

This five-track extended EP represents Translate's crystalline, scientific sound 100%, seasoned with well-managed minimalism, precision bleeps and hypnotic, mental arrangements.

All this is administered at different speeds and sensibilities, sometimes more galactic and mental and sometimes more dynamic and physical, but always futuristic and timeless.

Secus, a mainstay of Bay Area record label Peer, has returned with his sophomore release on the specialist imprint. The Los Angeles artist showcases his creative range in the Negative Form EP, a cross-section of underground techno through five original singles.

First among them is “Ascent,” whose hallmark feature is its polyrhythmic chime loops. Hair-raising atmospheres spill in slowly enough for a symphonic crescendo to sneak up on the listener before each instrument retreats to the shadows.

“Drift Signal” takes a different approach, beckoning primal movement by way of an extraterrestrial groove. Every few bars, a distorted air raid siren rings out, leaving a gentle echo to trail off over the savage syncopations below. Cycles of shrill intensity add a layer of intrigue to this peak-time cut.

A dissonant arpeggio instills an air of urgency at the outset of “Negative Form.” Looped to oblivion, this motif transforms over the course of the single’s runtime. It hypnotizes the listener so deeply that they scarcely notice any of the changes throughout the arrangement.

Of all the EP’s conjurings, “Obsidian Lens” is perhaps the most haunting. Bass stabs hit like hand drums in this psychedelic cut, whose expert use of Foley effects seems to reflect one’s shadow self through a mirror of sorts. It’s up to them whether they see it for what it is, though.

The EP closes out with “Falling Through Static,” the most melodic entry of its tracklist. A cinematic chord progression paints with a more accessible emotional palette than all that came before, not to be outshone by the cerebral sound design that has proven to be Secus’ calling card.

As such, it only makes sense that Peer would tap him for a sophomore release. The label stands out as a rare constant in a rapidly shifting arts ecosystem, following the unspoken rules necessary to cut through the noise and reach revered tastemakers. Secus evidently speaks this language as well.

Starting as it means to go on, in big
room & an explosive sounding style.
Choppy synths create a hands in the air
atmosphere whilst lows get that head

an older Advent track called
"P-TEK", with a complex
yet delicate array of extra parts.

Detroit bass flooding through from the
start along with hits and stuttered
hats. A fundamental TECHNO groove that
sees the track hit the ground running.
More simplistic than the first track yet
just as affective. A unique synth and
melody accompany a moving foundation. A
track that has been in the pipeline for
some time, "with a certain sample
from one of Detroit's Finest
techno Originators" finally sees

Advent – A coming, or an arrival, a coming into being or use. 

Quite an appropriate name for Cisco Ferreira, a man who has played a big part in the creation and development of Techno from the very beginning of this genre’s history. Indeed, his Techno CV is the stuff of legend. Cisco was producing Techno and performing live Techno shows years before the rest of the world had even heard of the genre. He released his first track in 1988, was a pioneer of the Live PA (or Live Public Address – performing Techno live in front of an audience using electronic music gear), and, if all that wasn’t enough, he even worked as the sound engineer on some of Derrick May’s, Adonis & Fingers Inc’s recording sessions! 

The list goes on, and so does Cisco. Unlike other Techno pioneers from the early years, Cisco continues to produce with as much passion and frequency as he did back in the day. His releases on Labels Like Tresor, Rotation, Electrix, Kanzleramt, Dj Gigolos, Pure Plastic, Synewave plus many more is just another example of his ongoing pursuit to keep making music and pushing Techno to new boundaries. 

Cisco was born to Portuguese parents on the island of Madeira (Portugal). His family moved to London (1975) when he was five years old, setting the stage for his musical career. While at Paddington College (1986) in West London, he studied sound engineering and secured a job after graduation as an assistant sound engineer at ZOLOU Then later WALL Studios.  

At this period is when he really started to learn about Sound & Production, his 1st main recording sessions as an engineer were rock & “Inde” based bands & the studio owners being in successful rock bands. Matt Dangerfield & John Payne “ASIA” this 1st step was a start in learning about balancing & mixing down the rock way, which had a lot of intense & Raw energy especially on drums & Guitars.. 

Other bands Cisco did sessions for: P.I.L. (John Lydon - sex pistols) – Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) – That petrol emotion. Then Later Pop, Dance, Soul & reggae groups like: Wild Bunch (Nelly hopper & Massive Attack) – Marco Pirroni (Adam & the ants) - Maxi Priest – Sly Dunbar (Sly & Robbie) – Loose Ends – Cheryl Lynn… 

1987 Cisco began going to clubs and learning about this new thing called Acid House, which was spreading like crazy throughout London’s underground scene, culminating in the famous “Summer of Love” in 1988, the genre’s golden period. 

Around this time, a record label called, Jack Trax, “One of the 1st to release Acid House, House & techno in UK” moved in next door and began using the same studio for recording sessions, with Cisco as the engineer working with Fingers Inc, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson & Derrick May. Cisco released his first record in 1988 on Ferrari records (R&S records) Then later “Cisco Ferreira” EP on Fragile. 

His first big break came in 1994, when he and fellow Londonite Colin McBean (a.k.a. Mr. G) were brought on by Internal Records to help co-produce a group called Salt Tank. A record contract with Internal/FFRR soon followed, committing The Advent to 12 EP’s and 3 albums.

Today, The Advent goes on just as Cisco Ferreira. While he has had a long history with tons of accomplishments to hang his hat on, he continues to make history. The Advent is fulfilling Cisco’s vision as much as ever. He is busy touring as both a DJ and a live performer, producing for numerous labels, and running his own Techno imprint, Kombination Research. 

As Cisco moves forward, striving to fulfill the ambitious goals he has set one can look back at his storied past and see how he has come full circle… The Saga continues.
