“Tabanca” is a word mostly used in the Caribbean, especially in Trinidad and Tobago.

It describes a deep feeling of heartbreak, longing, or melancholy — usually after losing a romantic relationship. Some say it’s not just sadness but a kind of *sweet pain* where you miss someone so much it almost feels physical.

In Trini culture, people even joke about “tabanca” being like an illness that makes you stop eating, can’t sleep, and only think about the person you lost. It’s often expressed in carnival, soca, and chutney music.
