Sound Design Exercise

Given 9-30 second files consisting of pure sine waves.  45Hz, 100Hz, 173Hz, 200Hz, 260Hz, 400Hz, 500Hz, 800Hz, 1400Hz.

Requirements were I could chop up the files however I wish and layered them in any combination or order to make any sort of audio piece.  I did not have to use all the files.  However I could ONLY use Volume and Panning with NO other processing AND it had to be exactly 2 minutes.

Cittaflow has been performing live shows around the Puget Sound since 2009. The founder, Masaru Higasa, formed the group with the purpose of providing sound healing through rhythm and acoustics. In 2011 the band has expanded with Jeff Kines, Kevin Wrenn, Julian Okeefe & Emma Staarbird joining the flow...Also drawing from a dynamic community of musicians for each show to create a new unique sound every performance.. Cittaflow performs at festivals, private events, local businesses, and any venue seeking live music with an emphasis on spiritual intention.

Cittaflow's music is always improvisational by nature while weaving electronic production in the mix. The original style focused on electronic production as its root, but has since shifted to a more organic sound, incorporating traditional instruments from around the world and the personal experiences of the musicians who play them. The result is an evolving sound capable of adapting to the spirit of the event.

The intention is to create from the source, from the true spirit of each musician and instrument. By truly stepping aside and letting the spirit talk, the listener can journey, heal and experience the true power of vibrations..

Having fun with a 30 Second sample of White Noise and ONLY EQ.  

Noise Pollution

Taken a 20 second sample of a Grackle (Bird that sounds like a Frog, from Texas) & 260 Hz Tone.  I cut the sounds up into samples less than 15ms and layered them on a grid, while the only processing I DID use was from creating a Tempo Map.  

The result is 2 minutes of Looney Toon Chaos.  InJoy

Grain Frogs

We brought a pile of various metal, plastic, wood and other "junk items" and recorded a broad range of sounds with varying velocity, microphones, distance etc...

I then chopped up a bunch of it and created a Drum Rack out of these sounds.  My intention is that they will be augmented sounds applied in music production to give character to a "real drum kit".  In total I came up with about 130 samples for Kicks, Snares, Toms, Brass and Auxiliary Perc.

For this piece to demonstrate the sounds I created a simple Hip Hop beat and Auditioned All the samples in Real Time, using minimal effects.  It's not smooth and pretty, but that was not my intention, it's to get a idea of the sounds I carved up.

I took a 20 second sample of someone walking back and forth in a parking garage. 

I chopped up the samples from 5-30ms and layered them on a grid and ONLY used Delay Processing.

A mix I put together this afternoon from mostly some new music I recently acquired.  Also this is my first published mix.  DJ Mixing is stil new and I feel this is going to be the 1st of many to come, before I start playing live. 

I couldn't help to showcase a few songs from Hopscotch aka. Anahata plus some Trifonic I just knabbed.

CJ Stone - Afternoon Mix - 7.8.12

Enriched with diverse life experiences from many parts of the world, charged with a passion for inspiring and sexy artistic expressions, CJ Stone brings his focus and attention to “the sound”.  CJ is an energetic, dedicated, audio design student adept at music recording, mixing, mastering, on-location recording, sound design and audio post for film.  He is able to realize the vision of a project by effectively managing the necessary assets, people, facilities and technology needed to bring the project to completion within a required production budget and timeline.  Along with assisting others to achieve their audio desires, CJ continues to actively move forward in search of his own evolving sound.

Music has been a part of CJ’s life ever since he was 8 years old when got a dual cassette player/recorder for his birthday.  Growing up he never had a lot of money, so he would save as much for new music & blank tapes when he could but mostly recorded songs off the radio and borrowed tapes from friends and family to copy.  Even though music was always in his ears and he did manage to acquire a few instruments (piano, acoustic & electric guitar, bongos) and even took music lessons, he never really acquired the “talent” for actually playing music on an instrument.  Dreams of being a “rock-star” seemed so unreachable.  However that never deterred him to continue recording songs, making mix tapes, chopping / mixing / mashing songs up on his cassette recorder.  Essentially he made a lot of noise along with beautiful playlists for the “ladies” he was enamored with.  Then when he was around 10 he found his ‘voice’.  Not so much singing voice, but his weird alien, bleep-blop voice.  He also started to realize that he could make his voice emulate those instruments he couldn’t actually play.  With the innovation of making weird noises on his cassette player plus his newly discovered vocal talent, CJ, without even knowing it, gave birth to his love and passion of electronic music, which is still with him today.

It took many years from loosing himself and discovering himself to come full circle to where he is today.  Now armed with extensive knowledge and experience, not only in audio technology but also in life, love, people, philosophy etc., CJ is determined to not loose sight of his passion of music.  He is committed to “the sound”.

CJ is also an avid video and image editor and enjoys photography and digital painting.  Outside of the studio CJ enjoys free-form, contact-improv dance, cooking, road-trips, spending time with his son, hanging out and hiking in nature and participating in outdoor music-festivals such as Beloved, Lighting in a Bottle and Burning Man.
