In January 2015 we brought you ‘Sarava Exu’ - Ricardo Donoso’s most demanding album filled with arcane musings and rich cinematic majesty highly lauded by international press for its high degree of sophistication. Now, a year later we present ‘Sarava Exu Remixes’ – a collection of reinterpretations’ by some of the most talented musicians working in contemporary electronic music today.
Industrial techno luminaries Orphx take the reins on leading single “Vesperum” and turn its bombastic ‘Zimmeresque’ landscape into a pummeling piece of broken techno in a way only Christina & Rich know how, despite the current swarm of dilettante’s trying to emulate their sound.
John Flynn’s Spaces, responsible for production duties on Björk’s Vulnicura album closer ‘Quicksand’ mangles and lacerates album central point ‘Gallicinium’ to near indistinguishable form with huge nods to early era Warp. Archie Pelago breaks down ‘Matutinum’s dark core and provide a beautiful arrangement for strings & horns including some dramatic accompaniment for the tracks main 11/8 ostinato. Dark ambient pioneer, and label mate, Thomas Köner ends the proceedings with a mind-blowing interpretation of ‘Diluculum’; ‘Sarava Exu’s complex and multi-dimensional closing number into a sophisticated piece of sub glacial tones & atmosphere, focusing instead on the inner side and calm characteristics of a fairly violent tune, recalling his early work for Barooni in the early nineties. A new window into the universe of ‘Sarava Exu’ by some of the most compelling electronic musicians working today.

ALPHABET explores the combinatorics between signs on one side and signals on the other. The performance, inspired by the Etymologies of Isidore of Seville twisting the scientific rigor to privilege phonetic acquaintances, revisits the strategies of representation invented by the man to tell the world around him in the digital age. ALPHABET invites the spectator to immerse themselves in the multiple relationships that, through language and its digital translations, maintain words and things.

After many collaborations this new record by Anne-James Chaton and Carsten Nicolai aka Alva Noto speaks a new language, generated by the fusion of objective poetry and minimal music. From the dialogue of the graph and the glitch a poetics of the code is born from which arises a representation of the contemporary world.

Kangding Ray . Pruitt Igoe
12’’ E.P.

Pruitt Igoe is a 4 track E.P on which both Alva Noto and Ben Frost have been invited by Kangding Ray to produce sonic variations on a contemporary architectural myth.

The EP’s title Pruitt Igoe is taken from a gigantic social housing project, completed in 1955 in the U.S. City of St Louis, Missouri, and often regarded as a symbol of the modernist architecture failure. Designed according to the principles of modernism, and by the same architect who would later build the World Trade Center, the project saw a disastrous and violent decline after only a few years, plagued with vandalism and massive criminality, leading to its complete destruction from 1972 onwards. Footage of its demolition are visibly featured in the 1983 movie “Koyaanisqatsi”, scored by Phillip Glass.

Pruitt Igoe is more than a post-modern icon, it represents an ancestral movement of hope and disillusion, of perfectly planned models and evaporated dreams. It serves as a judicious metaphor for our era, where the feeling of imbalance and doubt has replaced the certainity of eternal progress and endless economical growth. 

This movement is reflected by the two sides of the record: on the A side, the original track and its remodel by Alva Noto, both represent the planning and construction phase, based on a clear structure and a hypnotic loop of women chanting in the streets of a small town in North India. On the B-side, Ben Frost and Kangding Ray undertake the demolition process - slicing beats, destroying structures and emphasising the beauty of collapse.
