BURR OAK mark a monolithic moment in their sonic journey with the release of their debut album, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which stands as the crown jewel of the two member’s careers as solo artists and as a duo alike. Packed with a mammoth 18 tracks that span the full breadth of the Neurofunk genre, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG sees BURR OAK deliver a definitive work set to cement itself well within the history of the genre.

BURR OAK’s own story is mirrored in the stories of their twin cowboy personas, Scruggs and Sonny Jim, whose escapades are expressed throughout the album’s tracklist and the tales that accompany it. Much like these two inseparable wanderers, BURR OAK’s two members, Niko and Julien, began their careers as solo artists before joining together to embark on their shared quest as BURR OAK. Longtime fans of Neurofunk will recognize each by their many other monikers. Niko has produced and performed variously as a member of the French Drum & Bass trio Signs, as half of the duo Cecil Hotel, and under his solo alias Opsen throughout his long career devoted to the pursuit of Drum & Bass’ most technical edge. By contrast, Julien’s journey under his solo alias The Clamps has seen him champion both cinematic soundscapes and the genre’s most extreme fringes, merging beauty and brutality within his music in equal measure. 
If this wasn’t a colorful palette of a career enough, they are also running another project with the also Toulouse based SKS – “Forum” which is also a heavyweight drum and bass project with a jungle/rave/oldschool twist. And to add a cherry on the top Julien runs Third Colony with Yan, an extravagant IDM/downtempo project.

As BURR OAK, these two prolific artists intertwine their sounds in an inexorable musical lattice, presenting a unified sonic profile that is more than the sum of its parts. This stylistic synergy thrives amidst SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which details the story of BURR OAK both in fiction and as the producers they are today. The album’s title speaks to this, not only for the duo’s cowboy characters but for Niko & Julien as well. Beneath the branches of the BURR OAK, these titans of Neurofunk have truly found somewhere they belong.

Premiered during good friend and label mate Nora En Pure’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix debut last month, ‘My Friend’ is further testament to EDX’s ability to put a deliciously deep spin on any track he sets his sights on. Layering the chilled vocals against a hypnotic beat, mesmerising synths and squelching bass, EDX weaves his magic once again. Whether you’re lazing by the pool or dancing until dawn, EDX has provided yet another infectious summer soundtrack, perfectly encapsulating those hedonistic summer days and nights.

Still riding high on the success of his Ibiza Sunrise remix of ‘Roadkill’, which soared straight to the top of the Beatport House Chart, notching up another #1 spot to add to his impressive list of accolades, EDX is currently in the midst of a mammoth ‘Roadkill’ Summer Tour. The electronic artist’s ability to produce, arrange and compose comes from years spent mastering his studio craft and earning him an impressive discography on some of dance music’s leading labels.
 
His next EP, Switch, comes on Yousef’s Circus Recordings. The title track is a blend of quirky vocals & slamming tribal beats, with chuggy, tom drum driven low end. Original vocals come from Canadian Hip-Hop/R&B singer Dope Earth Alien. There is also a chunky funk dub mix, which is a more groove led take on the original. Finally, the powerful Octave rounds off the package with an uplifting melodic cut.

A showcase of fresh talent from the global electronic scene, Anjunadeep’s Explorations series returns for its fifteenth instalment, featuring Anjunadeep alumni M.O.S., Nuage and OCULA and three debutants in ANII, Nōpi and Igor Garanin.

Kicking off the compilation is Russian trio M.O.S. with ‘Khimiya’. Hosting an array of percussion and rich atmospheric pads, the trio demonstrate why they have been supported by Lee Burridge, Guy J and Sébastien Léger. In a marked contrast, Lisbon-based ANII delivers a heavier club-cut in ‘Let’s All Make Love’. ANII’s successful career in the electronic scene has seen her release on labels including Afterlife and Kompakt. 

Next up, Nuage returns to the label with ‘Reflection 2020’, following his previous Anjunadeep EPs ‘Abandoned Sun’ and ‘H.A.L.O’. Leading with breakbeat drums, Nuage showcases his textured productions that have been supported by Phil Taggart on BBC Radio 1. OCULA explores morphing synth riffs in ‘Tephra’, paying homage to his well-known nostalgic, progressive sound that was first endorsed by deadmau5 and Lane 8.

Making his Anjunadeep debut, Nōpi brings his heartfelt track ‘Famous’ to the EP, featuring a wide palette of sound design. Finally, we welcome Azerbaijan-native Igor Garanin for his label debut in ‘Sunday Driver’, offering a deep percussive-cut characterised by a growling bass.
