Five new tracks from one of the US underground’s most exciting voices, Heavy Eyes finds Sobolik refining their sound while reconnecting with their roots. Written over eight months between June 2024 and February 2025, the record came out of a moment of recalibration. After a run of dense, chaotic releases, Sobolik stripped things back and turned their focus to groove and percussion, gravitating towards techno, tribal house and dubstep for inspiration – but never long enough for any one genre to define them.

The result is a set of tracks that balance dissonance and playfulness, with a renewed emotional core. “I wanted to hone things down,” they explain. “None of them are straightforward bangers, but they’re all playful, charged, and connected to the deep reverence for pop music that’s always driven me.”

Musically, the EP takes influence from Trekkie Trax, 85 Acid and Yaleesa Hall, late-‘00s dubstep pioneers like Appleblim and Peverelist, and the DJ worldbuilding of CCL, Gigsta, Objekt, and Kiernan Laveaux. But at its heart, it’s rooted in Sobolik’s most formative experiences in the North American underground, channeling the unbridled spirit of DIY raves like Montreal’s Layer05 and STM, Philadelphia’s Chrysalis and Concréte, New York’s Groovy Groovy and TOSSD, and of course Sobolik’s own Antidote nights. “This music is for those floors,” they say. “The places that captured my heart.”

As their seventh EP, Heavy Eyes feels like a sure step forward. “It comes from me DJing more, deepening my knowledge of how dance music works on the body and on a crowd,” Sobolik reflects. “I feel more confident now, put less pressure on myself – and I think the tracks are cleaner, more distilled.” That maturity doesn’t come at the expense of personality, though: this is still music full of texture, humour, and an air of “why the fuck not?”

The EP closes with a remix from Swedish innovator Peder Mannerfelt – ‘business (techno) in the front, party in the back’ personified and one of Sobolik’s earliest inspirations. “He’s been flying the flag for freaky, fun, bassy techno for years,” Sobolik says. “His tracks set my gold standard for dancefloor music – I did not expect he’d be so immediately down to remix my material, and I’m really humbled by his support.”

With Heavy Eyes, Sobolik delivers their sharpest and most focused work yet: club tracks that are fierce and frenetic, but also deeply earnest.

You open your eyes and find yourself in a dense forest, surrounded by tree trunks all different shades of purple and a low green mist that obscures the view to the sky.

With a full year behind us since our last release on Delayed’s own Never Late, we’re proud to welcome French artist Gëinst to the platform with his ‘Hiber Trace’ EP. We first discovered the music of Gëinst through mutual friends & upon that initial discovery, were immediately intrigued by his musical ecosystem. A prolific yet incredibly humble artist, he has had releases on labels such as Lowless with a superb split EP earlier this year with Simone Bauer, his Into The Valley EP on Souleiman & Foreign Material’s label Norite, a string of releases with Sub Accent’s label Accents, appearances on Emmanuel’s ARTS & a few recent compilation inclusions on Lithuanian platform Area 127 & Ina Kacz’s Aneelhi Rec. His sound has grown & evolved significantly over the years, as he remains in constant motion, continuously refining his process in the studio. 

We were lucky enough to meet Gëinst in person for the first time earlier this year, at our favorite Mostra Festival back in April. We shared some special times together in the cavernous Vall d’Hebron Olympic Pavilion, a place we’re so eager to return to again next year, in only a few months. It’s a pleasure to welcome Gëinst into our growing family, a fairly new but already dear friend of ours because of those powerful dancefloor experiences. It brings my mind back to that spark that led to the creation of Never Late, an inspired moment on a Brooklyn dancefloor a few years back. 

The ‘Hiber Trace’ EP, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, feels perfectly paired with the crisp winter mornings we have ahead of us - cold & sharp, beautiful & pristine, fierce & unforgiving, like shards of ice moving through a body of water. The title track grabs your attention right away, every sound thoughtfully distorted & processed subtly with effects, a steady rhythm you find your head moving back & forth to no matter how many times you listen to it. The tension builds ever so slowly & then that beautiful, enticing snare appears & stays with you for the entire journey. As soon as those melodic sequences come in, you’re hooked & the track cruises at altitude for just over 9 minutes. 

For our 4th release on Never Late, Gëinst presents his 6-track ‘Hiber Trace’ EP, released digitally on December 5th.

Gábor Lázár's colourful discography extends from sound art to his more recent dancefloor detonations. From his first release on Lorenzo Senni's Presto! label to his collaborations with Russell Haswell and his popular 'seizure inducing' team-up with Mark Fell entitled 'The Neurobiology of Moral Decision Making' to his last album 'Unfold' on The Death of Rave, where he balanced relentless, snappy rhythms and wonky melodic tones against more measured chords to create a deliciously fruity futurism.

Gábor has now signed to Planet Mu for his new album 'Source' which moves forward with the dance music direction he started to formulate with 'Unfold'. Gábor first fell in love with electronic music simultaneously through dance music and it's IDM offspring, and also with harsher, noisier computer music on labels such as Editions Mego. This collection, which develops slowly over 8 tracks, works its way through his own take on these influences, moving across themes and loops as if each track is a different stage in a process. 

All these tracks sound incredible on a club sound system. The listener can hear nods to hoover bass and 2-step in 'Phase', or trance techno in ‘Excite', the dive-bombing bass of dubstep in 'Effort ' or the frantic techno influence of 'Route', emulated in the minimal forms Gábor has created with a sound artist's precision and a strict adherence to his vacuum-like grids. Gábor bends his sounds, abstracts them and re-contextualises them; basslines fire out of the grid at strange angles and squirm as if they've come alive, shards of melody shoot off at wild angles, attacking with drama and a thrilling sense of energy.
