A riotous romp through imaginatively used samples, familiar piano riffs, customary beats and other rave tropes, the master of mischief Luke Vibert puts together a 10 track ode to the era of M25 convoys, mobile phone hotlines and raving amongst dogs on strings in British aerodrome fields. 

With a long and extensive history in the UK’s dance counterculture spanning three decades, Vibert has released a barrage of inventive and animated music over the years that really doesn’t take itself too seriously, and is all the better for it.  LPs and singles for Mo Wax, Warp, Planet Mu, Ninja Tune and Rising High really speaks for itself, so it’s a honour to welcome Vibert back onto Hypercolour (after 2014’s ‘Ridmik’ album and 2015’s return of his Kerrier District moniker).

Vibert stiches together a collage of sounds, samples and beats for ‘Luke Vibert Presents UK Garave Vol. 1’ that captures the essence of the rave era perfectly.  Shuffling breakbeats and spine-tingling synths provide the flashbacks on ‘Heard It All B4’ whilst an onslaught of classic vocal hits come at the listener faster than a double drop rush on ‘Feel The Melody’.

‘Feel The Riddim’ doffs it cap at the dawn of UK garage with big bass bin rumbling riffs and Todd Terry beats on +8 whilst ‘U Can’t Touch Dat’ fuses skippy garage beats, rave-tastic stabs and another rewind on the ‘Can You Feel It’ vocal sample that never fails!

Whether you are an ageing raver, or a wide-eyed newbie, ‘Garave Vol. 1’ is a hugely enjoyable frolic in rave’s DAT tape archives, with Vibert playing master of ceremonies to a musical genre that quite simply refuses to die!

True dedication is difficult to find these days, as is motivation when digital media has overthrown old school methods, which makes running a label an even more sinuous mission. Despite a wealth of hurdles that increasingly come with the territory, this hasn’t put an end to people’s desire to push out their own imprints. Concurrently, the same digital revolution that has thrown off the industry has also made it possible for many projects to come into the spotlight, and many of these have made a spectacular difference. Whether it’s smaller side projects of well known artists, serving up quirkier, more experimental tracks, enabling further sonic exploration, or newborn collectives doling out fresh takes on contemporary sound, 2017 has been a prolific year for record labels.
But it’s not just the approach related to creating and promoting labels that has shifted recently. In recent times, the way we make and consume music has transformed as well. A label’s role has changed into that of a full on curator, influencing current musical trends based on their selection of outputs. But it’s not a status that is easily achieved, by all means.
Moving at its own pace, ten years in the world of dance music come as a century in real life, as dancefloor trends fluctuate. In such a surrounding, creating timeless pieces is essential when maintaining a high calibre establishment. But thanks to platforms such as Soundcloud or the ever-pervasive social media channels, it’s easy to showcase tracks and kick off labels without needing the once coveted record deal. Nevertheless, record labels serve as beacons in a world where we’re inundated by more and more content.
More than just a release platform, labels are indispensable partners in artists’ careers as the one to curate only the best music, accompany it with according designs, as well as bringing in new marketing ideas or even music videos. Shir Khan’s Exploited label has been a true example of such a label, hand-picking new producers to showcase, nurturing them from early beginnings into popular household names.

Shir Khan’s strong ear for talent has seen him responsible for launching the careers of Claptone, Adana Twins, Joyce Muniz through their releases on Exploited, the label also providing a platform for established remixers and artists such as Siriusmo, Freeform Five, Munk, Modeselektor, John Tejada, Phil Weeks, Cosmin TRG, Locked Groove, Deetron, Detroit Swindle, Acid Pauli, Ralph Lawson...

High quality house music is, no doubt, a specialty of Kerri Chandler’s, and his groove infused ‘Get Out’ is no exception. A powerful remix package is on its way for Kerri’s own Madhouse Records via his Matrix alias, and Mixmag has grabbed the Detroit Swindle take, which rewinds it all the way back with the infectious vocal samples from the original released all the way back in 1992 on Madhouse. The remix package, along with takes from Peggy Gou, Josh Butler and Jimpster, is out February 9.

Angelo Ferreri began producing tracks in the early noughties and has since formed two record labels and produced over 100 tracks. ‘Want To Say EP’ is his first release for the Miami-based Soulfuric family, a name that stands as one of the most renowned labels in house music. The three-track EP remains true to the record label’s soulful roots, moving through groove-laden jazz, disco and 90s influences, demonstrating the producer’s ability to create versatility with rounded feel-good vibes. The title track collides the worlds of 90s house with a real jazz influence, offering funky piano riffs behind a pumping beat. ‘I’m Talking To You’ has an up-tempo classic disco backdrop with a kicking bass and soul backing vocals. Finally, ‘The Real Ghetto’ (Extended Mix) takes a southern turn with hollering vocals and electric guitar solos. A truly sun-soaked Soulfuric Trax debut from the Sicilian-born producer.

A bold statement against insular club culture, closed minds and lack of innovation, ‘The Choice’ continues Catz ‘N Dogz positive broadcasts with the help of Miss Bunty and three great friends on remix duties. Bunty instantly flips us back 25 years to a warehouse in New Jersey with a soulful, provocative sermon about the best things in life, people and places. She wraps herself tightly around a thumping, grainy jacking acid beat creating instant uplift, focus and a lesson we should all aspire to. 
Her powerful delivery works just as effectively over all remixes. Belgian Beton returns to Pets with a darker, rippling rhythm that drops its anchor in the timeless techno abyss while Bawrut continues the rich vein of form he’s developed on Ransom Note with a caustic frenzy of breaks, acid and raw, gut-wrenching sirens. Finally we have Soul Notes and Shall Not Fade affiliate Adryiano close the case. Laying down a bed of peppy organs, he creates a fittingly classic garage vibe for Bunty to sign out to. Berlin based talent Black Loops arrives on Madhouse Records to deliver his four-track ‘JAH Love’ EP this April, featuring two cuts alongside Nikoss.

With releases on Toy Tonics, Freerange, Pets Recordings and Neovinyl to name just a few, Riccardo Paffetti aka Black Loops has built a stellar reputation as one of house music's most consistent and impressive names since making his production debut back in 2013. A skilful hand both within the studio and behind the decks, the Italian's slick blend of deep and soulful house music takes cues and inspiration from funk, disco and beyond, with his latest batch of productions coming in the form of his ‘JAH Love’ EP on Madhouse Records this April, featuring New Zealand producer and musician Nikoss.

Title track ‘JAH Love’ opens the package through a smooth blend of skipping percussion, infectious vocal samples and funk heavy instrumentation, before ‘Your Mind’ introduces the first of two productions alongside Nikoss as rich piano melodies and acid-tinged bass patterns merge effortlessly throughout the track’s six-and- a-half-minute duration.

On the flip, ‘NYC Dirty Talks’ takes a trip across the Atlantic as resonant pads and slick drum licks combine to reveal a production that would find itself perfectly at home within any Kerri Chandler set, before rounding out proceedings with the bubbling 303 driven ‘Silly Acid’ once again in partnership with Nikoss, guided by bright keys, soft chords and vibrant low-end tones.

Demuir marks an inaugural release on Hot Creations with High. Alive. And Dirty., a
diverse four track EP made up of all original records.

The EP opens with Santa and The Elf. A penetrating bassline ratchets up and down, as horn
like synths whir occasionally in the background, alongside tassel-like hi-hats. Up next, the title
track High. Alive. And Dirty. provides stunning contrast. A happy, funk-fuelled number, the
track incorporates disco elements with “positive and soulful vibes”, before Rawness - Beat 3
features a “raw native structure”, bongo sounding drums and tropical vocals to from a well-
rounded, feel-good record. Eerbawdy Wants to Deeezsko rounds off the EP in fine form, with
more disco elements and chiming, emotional keys.

Canadian-based Demuir is a distinctive talent in the electronic music sphere. A prolific
producer, Demuir has already made a home on labels including I’m A House Gangster as well
as Cassy’s Kwench Records, whilst he is soon set to release on Loco Dice’s iconic Desolat
imprint.

Mood II Swing - Do It Your Way

Riva Starr makes a highly anticipated return to his Snatch! imprint with two uplifting, soul-drenched house cuts featuring vocals from London-based singer Gavin Holligan.

As always with a release from East-London-based Stefano Miele, aka Riva Starr, there's fun, funk and musicality in bucketloads on offer with 'If I Could Only Be Sure'. Title-track 'If I Could Only Be Sure' is a soulful cut, fusing sultry, emotive vocals from ex-footballer and singer-songwriter Holligan with rich keys and a captivating groove. 'Scat Dub', a glorious and buoyant piece driven by loose, organic percussion and titular vocal rhythms that tightly wind hooks upon hooks within the track, rounds things off with some serious earworm-ing chops.

A musical free spirit, there's good reason why Riva Starr's productions and remixes find homes at so many top tier labels and 'If I Could Only Be Sure', complete with superb vocals from Gavin Holligan, is yet another diamond in his discography.
