This composition was inspired by a reading of the poem, "The Swan" by Mary Oliver.

The Swan

Did you too see it, drifting, all night, on the black river?
Did you see it in the morning, rising into the silvery air -
An armful of white blossoms,
A perfect commotion of silk and linen as it leaned
into the bondage of its wings; a snowbank, a bank of lilies,
Biting the air with its black beak?
Did you hear it, fluting and whistling
A shrill dark music - like the rain pelting the trees - like a waterfall
Knifing down the black ledges?
And did you see it, finally, just under the clouds -
A white cross Streaming across the sky, its feet
Like black leaves, its wings Like the stretching light of the river?
And did you feel it, in your heart, how it pertained to everything?
And have you too finally figured out what beauty is for?
And have you changed your life?

This musical became one of my favorites and many of my students took vocal lessons from me to sing this song and then performed it at our semi-annual recitals (and quite nailed it!). So, I thought, it's time to actually record my own version of it. Though, I am never satisfied neither with my singing nor with my playing, "Never enough" - it's like my mantra, to keep going and keep doing what I love with the person I love. Who (the person) decided that one "copy" of me is not enough, so he "cloned" me. Oh, and for the first time we used our shiny new AKG414 to record the vocal and the piano. I hope you will enjoy it!

On a different note, we keep working on our most ambitious album ever. 12 tracks are fully composed with two more on the way to complete the story. I hoped to finish everything by the end of the last year but, oh well, the life got in the way - we had recording sessions for several clients, including my own student. I am sooo looking forward to finishing the composing step and moving onto the recording stage.

What He Wrote Piano

Composed and played on an Ensoniq EPS controlling a Roland D-50.  Recorded on a Yamaha MT-1 4-track cassette recorder. Remastered with Adobe Audition.  The funny sighing sound on this is a  Brazilian friction drum or Cuica.  I had recently purchased a set of disks for the sampler with global sounds. I was using the sounds in all manner of odd ways based on how they fit since I had no idea what most of the instruments were.  The instrument is used on the Beastie Boys' 92 album Check Your Head, which is how I tracked down the name of this instument, nearly 30 years later.

There are definitely signs of age on these old 4-track recordings.  I digitized them in 1999, 8 years after the original recording. Time took its toll.  The D-50 was delivering a rich, stereo arpeggiated sound as the main synth in 1991.  Today you can hear the chords, but little of the movement of the sound from the original.  The track sounded pretty darned good when it was a new born.  You'll just have to take my word for it. ;-)
